Players getting cut throughout the league

I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion about some of the names being cut throughout the league. There might not be a more exciting time for FA in a long time. Not only are there going to be more bigger names than usual but they is going to be a crazy frenzy to get them signed! I'll go over the names I've heard after the jump, feel free to chime in with more names that I missed as well any speculation about where they could land and if you are interested in seeing any of them in Green and Gold.

Star-divide

Cowboys: Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Marc Columbo, Leanard Davis, and Kris Brown

Ravens: Todd Heap, Willis McGahee, and Derrick Mason

Giants: Shaun O'Hara, Rich Seubert

Tandon Doss out of IU

4th round pick, methinks. He was solid, but if he can produce more than Houshmandzadeh for less $$$, why wouldn’t you make the move?

You know the Pack have such minor and specific needs I don't see any of these guys really fitting

Basically right now it’s OLB and DE that really are the places a FA could come in and really contribute. Add in the prospects that we got through the new undrafted guys and that need lessens even more.

by PackApologist on Jul 26, 2011 4:53 PM CDT reply actions

For example...

Would there really be a spot for Roy Williams? I mean I guess so, but the WR corp is pretty stacked without him and I don’t see him as a major upgrade over Driver or Nelson, even though he might have more potential than either he just doesn’t ever really live up to that potential.

What about Todd Heap? Well we already have TE and FB’s coming out our ears. As talented as Heap might be I just don’t see him fitting in with Finely back, Williams just drafted, Quarless coming along, and Crabtree fighting for a spot as always.

Or any of the HB’s now….Barber sounds good but is he going to be better than Starks? Green looks good and even some of the undrafted guys would have more in the tank and could be pretty darn good.

by PackApologist on Jul 26, 2011 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Barber loves to dance at the line of scrimmage.

He had plenty of highlight reel plays and somehow made the Pro Bowl in 2007 (along with the entire Dallas Cowboys starting roster), but since then? He averaged a pathetic 3.3 YPC and got beaten out by Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, both of whom are very good backs.

Manny Lawson

He’s pretty much the only free agent I’ll be looking at seriously. Mostly because he’s affordable, young, and still has upside. That’s assuming we cut Brady Poppinga and still have room to sign our draft picks…

Donovan McNabb to Vikings....funny or scary?

Right now I’m thinking funny. Sounds like the trade would be affordable, but it would be great to see them invest more picks and money to the QB position after flushing a first round pick on Ponder.

No, no they are not by a long shot

Right now I don’t know if they even have a full defensive line for their first four games. Allen is still around, Williams will be suspended, Kennedy is gone, Evans is a FA according to NFL.com, I guess they will be counting on Ballard, Guion, and Robison.

Yeah that was at 50/50

Technically he’s not on the team right now. The funny part of all of this are the Viking fans saying that the moves cutting Kennedy and such is to clear cap room for Pat Williams. Some how if a team is cutting a guy at the same position as a 38 year old player in order to clear cap space something is wrong….

by PackApologist on Jul 26, 2011 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

They did the same thing when they released Rosenfels for QB4, didn't they?

Williams is a proven run-stuffer, He’s pretty old, but it’s a different thing to be a 38 year old DT than it is to be a 40 year old QB…

Nah Rosenfels was a political decision

He was typically considered a malcontent, and thought to be the source behind all the troubles in the Viking locker room.

Really Rosenfels came in because one member of their triangle of authority traded for him and believed in him while the coach didn’t like him at all. Sage and Chilly then clashed like…well mixing sage with actual chili, resulting in them pissing away another third round pick (which is what they traded for Rosenfels in the first place).

But hey, no one outside of DN has ever accused the Viking front office of being functional or having a plan.

Tampa

They are building their team the same way TT built Green Bay. I don’t think we can criticize them too much, it’s pretty similar to TT’s early years in Green Bay. They got rid of all their vets and built the team solely on draft picks. It’s still a very young team, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them stick with that mentality.

They were such tightwads last year

They should extend their young players with front-loaded deals, and maybe bring in a big-name FA or two. TB looks to be a solid landing spot for Nnamdi. Plus, that $59.2 mil below is including Aqib Talib’s $1,653,750 salary for next year, and they’ve already indicated that he’s not going to be back after his legal trouble. They’ll need a CB, and they’ll need to spend money; sounds like a match to me. They went 10-6 last year, so Asomugha’s desire to play for a winner is at least somewhat taken care of (though, their schedule last year was surprisingly easy). They are a team on the rise, however, and they have a good solid young nucleus.
