Green Bay Packers Expected To Release Justin Harrell, Brady Poppinga
Though nothing is official yet (a phrase I am sick of having to use), it seems all but certain that both outside linebacker Brady Poppinga and defensive tackle/end Justin Harrell are going to be released by the Green Bay Packers. ESPN's Jason Wilde revealed the news on twitter.
The @packers have informed Brady Poppinga and Justin Harrell that they are being released.
This comes as absolutely no surprise. Poppinga had no chance to start this season and the team needed the money that they would save by cutting him. Justin Harrell's low cap number of $650k made some think that he would be given another chance, but he has been an immense disappointment in his time in Green Bay, and he is due a large roster bonus in the coming days.
Despite my thought processes being completely illogical, this has gotten my hopes up about the prospects of keeping James Jones and Cullen Jenkins. Really, I'm just grasping at straws.

I might be mistaken but I thought I read that Harrell had a roster bonus that he would have been paid this season?
Fire Slocum
Yeah he did, it was probably due the 1st day of the league year..
Aug 4 I believe… Harrell would have made about 1.25M for this season. Poppinga was a no-brainer, kinda hoped they could keep Harrell. Good Luck to him! Hope he gets another chance w/ another team and can show his ability. Kinda feel bad for the guy… Just couldn’t stay on the field.
This should put us at about 7 or 8M under the cap. More than enough for the rookies and maybe enough for Jones. Jenkins would eat the entire amount, so that won’t happen.

Enough for the draft picks and Jones, but still probably not enough for Jenkins.

Jenkins and draft picks =
about 13 to 15M, 8-10M for Jenkins and 5M for draft picks. Don’t think we have enough for that.

Over on DN, they were posting tweets from Shefter, Clayton, etc. saying that the Packers had jumped back in the Jones hunt.

Trying to figure that out too..
Maybe Nance or Lee or Underwood? I’m guessing its not Chillar.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I can't imagine Nance or Underwood will stick around.
Nance isn’t a 3rd down back, and that’s all we need for the RB group. Underwood is an idiot as we all know. I know Chillar is making some $, but I’d be scared to let him go even with the injuries.

Neither Nance or Underwood really save money tho.
So it makes more sense to at least bring them both to training camp for bodies. Unless they already think the UDFA are better…
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Underwood
feels like a strong contender. What’s the official status of Jolly? I know he’s not on the roster, but is he still under contract?
Jolly is under contract, but doesn't count against the cap.
He is a candidate, but if he isn’t counting against the cap, I doubt its him.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
He's still with the team under his RFA tender (2.5 mil or so)
He likely won’t play in the NFL ever again (he’s going to be suspended for another year at the very least), but since he’s not counting against the cap there’s no reason to release him. Just hold on & wait to see how the NFL rules on his reinstatement, and go from there.

Yay!
Great news. I am so done with the Harrell soap opera. Good bye, I won’t miss you ole buddy. None of those releases make me too sad. I hope we can bring Tausch back for vets min. but he HAS to be cut.

What About
Clifton? He’s due 5 mil-ish this season… And Matt Wilheim? Restructuring or cutting on either of those two?

Unless wilheim has already been cut which i have not heard, theres no way he is playing for 3 mil next year. None. He should be gone soon…

Wilhelm isn't even on the roster.
Not that I know of. He was signed to a one year deal for just last year, I think. No way they are cutting Clifton! We don’t need the cap space that badly. It would be foolish to risk Rodgers health to start a rookie OT if we don’t have to…
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
by Strohman on Jul 28, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Clifton is probably making a bit more than what he deserves
but, hey, he’s our starting LT, who is a really good pass blocker. I think it would be a pretty big drop-off to the next guy on the list (Sherrod, probably). I wouldn’t feel all that great about a rookie protecting Rodger’s blind side. A restructure would be nice, but, it’s doubtful that Clifton would accept.
As far as Wilhelm, he’s a FA now, and when he was on the team, all he was making was the veteran’s minimum.
13.
At 5M Clifton is probaly underpaid.
He’s a good LT and starting LT are probably averaging close to 10M per season.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Probably underpaid
Clifton struggled last September, but he was great down the stretch. He made the Pro Bowl last season, and you can’t find a Pro Bowl left tackle for $5.75 million per season. He’s not going anywhere.
Yeah
I can’t see how anyone would think Clifton doesn’t deserve at least 5.75M a year!

not really underpaid
if you remember how dramatically front-loaded his contract was to take advantage of the uncapped year
Clifton's deal averages 7.5M
Still well below market price for a starting LT, much less a Pro Bowl one.

Resign Harrell
I don’t think releasing Harrell is a good idea.
If we can sign him for cheap (under 1 mil) I say we take a chance on him, see what he has to offer after a few seasons of “rest”… if he isn’t a player by the end of camp, cut him
Im starting to get concerned about our defensive line thinning out if Jenkins and harrell leave…
Dude
His contract was only $650k. After the roster bonus we would have paid him $1.3m this year. He’s gone. Super gone. Wasn’t a financial decision.

Yup
At some point it has to stop being about the money and just admit that its not working out. This team is SO deep and talented, there just isn’t room for him anymore. Someone else can take a chance on him…even if he looks good, I don’t mind. Move on, cut losses.

Call the police..
Boy did the Eagles rob Arizona! DRC and a second round pick for Kolb?? Really?? Wow, maybe the Pack should trade Flynn..haha
I love wins. Wins are good for the soul.- Barry Alvarez Sep 25, 2005
DRC is way over-rated.
He won’t tackle and isn’t even phyisical enought to play press coverage. Great talent, but lacking consistency and mental toughness, as well as not tackling. AZ wants to play a Pitts D where the CB have to tackle, so DRC isn’t a very good scheme fit either.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
ya..
Eagles announced it. Reported by ESPN.
I’m just not that impressed with Kolb. He will apparently sign a 5 yr $63M deal as well. Kolb himself was only a second round pick. I just don’t see it. Then again, I don’t get paid to make these decisions.
I love wins. Wins are good for the soul.- Barry Alvarez Sep 25, 2005
I agree with you
I think Kolb was worth a 2nd Rd pick straight up, that’s it! DRC is young yet and can still improve as a CB. There’s no question that he’s talented, so I would’ve continued to work with him. The Cardinals screwed themselves and will be mightily disappointed with Kevin Kolb. I am SO GLAD the Packers don’t have the Front Office of the Cardinals!!!!!
2011 Super Bowl Champs!
Rodgers was inconsistent after 6 starts when we signed him to an extension.
How has that worked out? Both Rodgers and Kolb trained under the best QB coaches in the NFL (McCarthy and Reid). Rodgers was 3-3 after 6 starts and Kolb is 3-4. If you think he’s a starting NFL QB you have to pay to get him. THe contract Kolb signed is very similar to the one Rodgers signed according to Brandt.
I don’t thiink Kolb will ever be as good as Rodgers, but I think he’ll be a top 10 NFL QB.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Florio was interviewed on the local sports radio...
and said the move was bad…so I was suspicious waiting for the second shoe to drop. And then it happened as expected. He brought up how Fitz is gone after this year anyway no matter if Kolb is in AZ because he’s going to Minn as a FA.

Until your post I hadn’t hear a word about anything related to signing draft picks. Hopefully the new CBA rules make that go smoother and therefore quicker than the past (I can’t say that I dove to deep into reading the new agreement). Hopefully they will have most or all of them signed before they miss any time in camp.

Correct me if im wrong on this but was he not given a second round tender. I am not really sure how this works or means and am asking someone with knowledge to explain how it works
He played last year on a 2nd round tender.
They tendered him again, but w/ the FA rules back to being 4 yrs for FA (instead of the 6 yrs it was last year), the tenders signed by anyone w/ more than 4 years became null and void.

Counterpoint
the Patriots picked up Ted Washington pre-2003 and Keith Traylor pre-2004 for almost nothing. Washington was coming off of torn ligaments in his foot and a leg fracture that sent him to the IR for the 2002 Bears. Traylor played in just 10 games in 2003.
Neither of those players was expected to make the 2003-04 run defenses what they were for New England, where they?
the Patriots ALSO picked up Randy Moss from Oakland in 2007, and would go on to the Super Bowl. Super Bowl loss or no, the last time New England picked up a true number one receiver (NOT Terry Glenn, in other words), that receiver broke the record for TD’s in a single season.
