Jason Spitz strengths and weaknesses?

Hello Packers fans.  The Jaguars have signed Jason Spitz, and we don't know much about him.

Star-divide

If anybody could layout his strengths and weaknesses, myself and the other fans over at BCC, would greatly appreciate it.  I have come to learn he was a backup all last season, but I can't figure out why.  And in 09 he was hurt most of the season.  Thanks a lot, as I said we greatly appreciate it.

A nasty nasty back injury

Spitz was the starter in 09 and was considered our best interior lineman before that until he had a nasty back injury. Really similar to what Justin Harrell suffered from for a couple years. From all accounts he didn’t come back from that 100% last year and so he get stuck in a back up role. I don’t even know how much he made it on to the field really.

If he’s healthy he’ll be good. Really good, especially at center.

One strength of Jason Spitz . . .

Is that he’s not Daryn Colledge.

He was pretty good before the injury

Tough to say how much it has affected him, he hasn’t been on the field too much since then. I don’t think he’s that different of a player than Daryn Colledge (which makes Spitz a better signing than the Cardinals), though with maybe slightly more of a nasty streak.

He’s capable of playing G or C, so I guess that’s a strength.

Spitz is a big unknown...

Even to Packer fans. Prior to his back injury, he was a guy who just showed up and did his job. Not much fanfare about him. Spitz is very versatile and can play any of the 3 interior OL positions. Best at Center, than RG and lastly at LG. That is a strength. Really he’s not overly talented, but is tough and smart. A typical OL in that regard. If he can play Center, he’ll become a really good one in a year. Assuming his back is in good shape, he is the kind of OL that can help any team.

I'm surprised he was signed so quickly

He wasn’t able to beat out Daryn Colledge or Scott Wells for a starting spot on the line, and he wasn’t even able to start a competition. He was a fine right guard for a couple seasons, and looked like the center of the future, so maybe the back issues really had been a problem. If he’s over them, the Jaguars probably have an average offensive guard. Still, that doesn’t make him a priority free agent signing.

Bummer i was hoping he’d be signed back. sigh…losing a LOT of players this year.

Not a big issue for me.

I don’t think we lost any guys yet who can’t easily be replaced. (granted, we’ve yet to lose Jenkins & Jones). I would say that we might even upgrade from within on a couple of these losses, anyway. Don’t forget, we’ll probably get some hefty compensatory picks after this season, barring TT signing any big name in the future.

Good angle on the compensatory picks! Never thought about that part…the silver lining!

I know we are deep and this stuff comes with being on the top, its still hard to see SO much change. Luckily most of these changes won’t hurt us TOO bad.

ANy time we lose a player in FA

I start wondering what we’ll get in a compensatory pick. Right now, assuming Jenkins leaves, I think a 3rd for him and a 5th for Colledge. Any other losses might improve those and add another late round comp pick.

and our starting veteran LG Vince Manuwai came in with an injured foot, 10-15 lbs overweight, and dealing with personal problems. He may not be ready come opening day, so Spitz would start and be solid, until Manuwai gets back, and he may start at Center next year, it was a small contract.

What were the terms on the deal?

I never caught them. Or are they still unannounced?
