It's Official - Packers Release Seven Players
The Green Bay Packers just announced it on their website. From Packers.com:
The Green Bay Packers have released LB
Nick Barnett, LB Brandon Chillar, DE Justin Harrell, LB Brady Poppinga and T Mark Tauscher. The team also waived first-year S Michael Greco and first-year LB Curtis Young. The transactions were announced Friday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.
If you aren't very familiar with either Greco or Young, you're not alone. They both spent part of the year on the practice squad, but they both did travel with them to Dallas for the Super Bowl.
I'm surprised they couldn't trade Barnett for a low draft pick, but knowing the Packers were going to release him if they couldn't trade him certainly depressed his value. He may sign quickly somewhere, and the Lions are already in pursuit.
I'm not sure what the future holds for Chillar, Harrell, or Tauscher. I'm still surprised they released Poppinga, they had kept him around for so many years I don't know why they wouldn't keep him again. All four players ended the 2010 season on I.R., and while some are more injury prone than others, their immediate future will depend on how healthy they are.

I'll miss Barnett and Tauscher.
off topic: with the Eagles getting Asomugha and if they keep Asante, I think it’s very important now that the Packers keep James Jones to counter that.

Bringing in 25 rookies this season is hardly complacency
I have seen rave reviews for both the 10 incoming draft picks and for the fifteen UDFAs the Pack netted. I think that the releases and FA departures must be seen in light of this flood of youth to camp. I imagine that it will be hard for many of these 25 to stick on a Super Bowl champion who already had about 15 quality players on IR at the end of last season, but the Pack seem to never stop bringing in volumes of quality kids.
The coaching staff is going to have some tough cuts this preseason.

We may still resign Tauscher, similar to what we did with Hawk earlier.
He seems like a guy that will retire a Packer and take less money to do so.
Yeah, they kinda screwed the pooch there...
knowing the Packers were going to release him if they couldn’t trade him certainly depressed his value
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." - Vince Lombardi
Yep, limited trade value then
The only real value would be from a team that wanted him, and didn’t want to risk not signing him in FA.
Yeah but...
What would you have done in his position? I’m not disagreeing, but I imagine you want to feel like you’re important to the future of a team and – hell, we’ve been talking about the departure of all the guys on this list since the end of last season.
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." - Vince Lombardi
I think he did it
Specifically so he could basically choose where he went. Instead of where ever the Packers traded him.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I didn't say otherwise.
Nor that I would have done differently. Gotta look out for yourself in that situation. Just that it cost us the ability to trade him.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
If the Packers were concerned/serious about trading him
they probably would have had a deal in place before they brought him into the principal’s office. Doubt they were surprised he went public so fast. A lot of guys, especially the UFAs, were on the radio talking about what was happening or where they were before anything was official.
They weren't allowed to talk trade during the lockout
So they never had the chance to talk trade. Then Barnett showed up in GB as soon as he could have his talk w/ Thompson and tweeted away… Removed ANY chance of trading him.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
I don't think ownership/FO's weren't banned from talking to each other...

Hmm... didn't know that.
Well I guess thas why none of these deals were worked out in advance. Makes sense.

no…Barnett screwed the pooch. That still annoys me, he did it in a classy way but NOW was the time to do it, not on Tuesday. He was never about the team…only about his ego. The more I looked at him, the less I liked him and I used to really like him.

Maybe it isn't surprising...
But I was just doing a little research on Gholston. Turns out he is still looking for his first sack in the NFL. Going into his 4th year and he hasn’t even somehow lucked into getting at least 1 sack?
If Gholston would have recorded 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, or 1 recovered fumbled, he would have gotten a 9 million dollar bonus
guess what? he did none of those things in 3 YEARS!

Bears fans have deluded themselves into thinking this signing isn't just a waste to fill up cap space
Switching back to defensive end instead of pass-rushing OLB (pass-rushing OLB who can’t get a single sack) will change him from one of the worst busts of the last 5-10 years, to great reclamation project of this decade.
by Packers3485 on Jul 29, 2011 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Now I also see that some Bears fans are trying to trick themselves into thinking Roy Williams to Chicago could = Randy Moss to NE in 07
Of course, they’re ignoring the obvious difference there…….you know, the fact that Randy Moss was actually a star before his little slump in Oakland.
Instead of a guy who had one 1000+ yard season. A guy who hasn’t had 800 yards in a season since 2007, and hasn’t even reached 600 since then.

I was trying to be generous to the Bears fans
And go along with their story that “Jay Cutler really is a great QB, he just hasn’t been able to show it in any way.” Though obviously the rest of the world can see the reality.
But even if Cutler suddenly transformed into the next great QB, Roy Williams would still be Roy Williams. Comparing him to Randy Moss is like…..um…..comparing Javon Walker to Randy Moss. A Javon Walker that started sucking even without the butt-load of injuries.
by Packers3485 on Jul 30, 2011 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions
Except I just remembered that Javon Walker had two 1000+ yard seasons
One with the Packer before he got injured, one with the Broncos before he got injured again.
So you can’t even compare Roy Williams to Javon Walker.

The Bears had a great offseason.......
According to Packers fans.
Whiffing on the bigger names they wanted, trading away one of their few decent offensive weapons on an already terrible O, and signing a pair of major busts in Williams and Gholston.
How much do you want to bet those two get huge contracts just so the Bears can fill up the mandatory cap space?
Ah, this is too good. So good that I’m starting to get worried. Too much good is happening to the Packers in 2011, I’m worried something bad will have to happen to balance it all out……
Eh, what am I saying? Here’s to the NFC North Championship!
Now they need to miss a bid on Jenkins
and the humiliation will be complete!
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." - Vince Lombardi
Eagles Cornerbacks
They are Over- Rated….. they are going to be a joke, You have no Idea of Namdi and DRC can play togther
And they're still the run defense that turned James Starks from the last hope of the Packers run O, into a star.
And I think Grant was having a good game in Week 1 until he went down.
So even if their CBs work out……..we’ll just set up in two TE and run the ball right down their throats.
Grant was on his way to 110, 120 before he got hurt.
The Eagles used to be built on stuffing the run and blitzing the QB into mistakes. They can have all the CBs they want, but if their run defense is soft they’re not ging anywhere.
DRC is badly overrated but still good
Samuel is a feast or famine guy so he’s naturally overrated because if his gaudy pick #‘s but Namdi is the real deal, he’s a younger CWood who’s not quite as good at tackling but still good at it and even better at coverage. He’s better than anyone we have.

Barnett
If the Pack had traded Barnett the team he was traded too would have to pick up his contract. IMO that was a greater problem in trrading him.
seems like the market for Jenkins is dying down.
Dallas and Washington passed over him, I know New Orleans has shown interest but that position isn’t a big need for him, perhaps Jenkins comes back to the Pack. Jets and Vikings still mulling over Jones. Would be awesome if the Packers managed to keep both of them, but I’ll be happy if they can just maintain one.

TE
Everything is now in place for MM to run a 5 TE set!
Hell, even if one gets hurt, we've got another one lined up to take his place
Finley, Quarless, Crabtree, Williams, Taylor, and now Havner. And I’m sure Thompson has probably signed about 4 UDFAs too. He’s going after a a Rodgers + all-TE offense, even at the OL positions.
……..And it would still be good enough to beat the Vikings and Bears.

geez serious? What the hell do we need so many TEs for? Has to be a ST move, don’t ya think?
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
Still think theres a very good chance
The Packers keep 4 TE, and only 1 FB. Hopefully that Kuhn… Williams, Taylor and Havner could all be FT type players and much better on ST, than Johnson. That would allow us to keep 6 WR if we wanted.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Still really not seeing the point of Havner
5 TEs before we even get to UDFAs or waiver wire guys is already enough. I don’t see any chance Havner makes it over any of the 5 we already have.
Maybe just doing a favor to a guy who did good work for us, giving him a last chance to play his way on to the opening day roster.
Competition
And camp bodies… There are 90 roster spots right now. Worth taking a look at him again isn’t it? I’m no Havner fan by any means, I called his release when everyone else thought he was a sure in to make the team, but its worth looking at him again. I don’t think he makes the team either. He and Taylor seem almost identical, and I’d honestly rather have Taylor even tho we haven’t seen him on the field yet.

Is Harrell really through?
With the not so hot DL situation, could or should the Packers try resign Harrell at bargain prices. The guy has first round talent or the Pack wouldn’t have stuck with him this long. If he is truly healed from his latest injury and they can get him at minimum wage, he might be worth another shot.
No offense, but this exact comment could have been made last year......or the year before.
When is the last time he didn’t have an injury when he tried to play football? At the latest, in 2005, since he was injured in 2006, his last year of college before we drafted him.
There have got to be plenty of guys in the bargain bin who have at least played NFL football, and have not been injured for 5 years straight.
Time to move on. If someone else takes the risk of signing him, and he does well, I will have no regrets. Just wish he could have done it with any one of the numerous chances Thompson gave him.
by Packers3485 on Jul 30, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Not a typical bargain binner
Some guys are in the bargain bin because of lack of talent. Harrell is very talented, that is why the injuries are so frustrating. Note that I heavily qualified it: “truly healed”, by that I mean no doubts whatsoever, AND will to come to camp for minimum wage. Otherwise, I agree to forget it. Of course, what he was making was ridiculous for the contribution and he needed to be let go.
Harrell is as talented as anyone on the DL, of that there is no doubt.
No guys that don’t have the talent aren’t in any bin. The bargain bin is full of guys that have talent but can’t put it together for one reason or another (opportunity, injury, stupid decisions, etc).
Harrell is NOT as talented as anyone on the DL…there is a lot of doubt there. What has he done in actual games as a pro to make you think that? I could list a ton of guys who have shown glimpses of greatness in practice or scrimmages but who aren’t great in real games. When he has played he’s been average at best. I honestly don’t even think, if he were healthy, that he’d even be able to secure a roster spot this year. Especially if we end up with Jenkins back again.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
So Harrell is as talented as BJ Raji now.
“Some guys are in the bargain bin because of lack of talent” – actually, most people who lack the talent to make an impact are not sitting in the bargain bin. They’re sitting at home. Resting this weekend until they go back to the office/factory/other workplace.
What has this guy done to show you this great talent of which you speak? What makes you think he is “as talented as anyone on the DL” despite the fact that, you know, he has never shown that in an NFL game, in 4 years?
As for “truly healed.” How exactly are you going to determine this? Ask him, “are you sure you won’t just get injured again this year?”
