Who Will Start At Outside Linebacker Other Than Clay Matthews?
Obviously Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews is a lock to start at left outside linebacker just as he did last season. But the job to start opposite him appears to be a wide open competition.
LB Frank Zombo started at right outside linebacker in their first practice, but then moved over to backup Matthews on Sunday night.
LB Brad Jones was the backup on the left side on Saturday, and the right side on Sunday. Maybe it's his turn to start with the first team defense on Monday.
LB Erik Walden started on the right side in place of Zombo on Sunday night.
I want to have a favorite among these three players, but I don't know which one of them should be the starter. I can point to a big game, or big moment, for each of them, but injuries held back all three to various extents last season. What do you think?

Walden's work vs Bears..
Maybe that was one of the games you point to…that’s why I went with Walden. I wouldn’t be upset with Zombo though..Jones seems like just a guy..

Maybe just a guy
I don’t recall where I read it (possibly GBPG), but one of the coaches made it sound like Jones was going to see time at all 4 LB positions in camp. It sounded like he was going to be an all-purpose back up. Or, maybe that’s just what the hope is.
Right now, I suspect that Zombo is the starter, though he and Walden probably come close to a 50/50 split snap count. Jones, if he makes the team (and I expect he will) will be an in-house journeyman.
GBPG it was
Jones backed up Matthews on the left side on Saturday and took reps on the right side Sunday. Coach Mike McCarthy said Jones is likely to get some work at inside linebacker because of depth issues.
Don't know if Jones is the guy...
…but considering the current lack of depth at ILB, it seems appropriate to get someone taking some reps there.
I picked Jones
Just becasue of the size and tbh I’d rather see Walden shape up for ILB. Zombo to me is a back up. He’s good but not start all season good.

I think Walden has the most upside.
But he has to improve his run defense.
I know it is a complete pipe dream but...
Osi Umenyiora has been given permission to seek a trade. Financials aside, this would make our defense unbeatable. That would really kick the Nnamdi/Eagles stroke fest at ESPN to the back burner.
That being said, I really love the fact that the Champs are being billed as the underdogs to the Eagles now. I think we play better in that situation.

Is strictly a 43 DE. He’s not big enough to play 34 DE and has never played standing up as an OLB. This will never happen. He would only be good as a one down pass rusher, nothing else.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Wouldn’t you put him at OLB? I think that is what he was implying since this is a discussion about who would start on the other side from Clay.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
Yeah I would..
But he’s never played OLB or played standing up as far as I know. And its more difficult to transition from playing w/ your hand on the ground to standing up than poeple think. Alot more to think about…
Giants want a 1st round pick too… Not willing to part w/ a 1st round pick for a player that would likely struggle transitioning to our D.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Yup…can’t disagree with you there. They won’t get anything near a first for him though. Heck if teams won’t give a first for a young potential franchise QB, they aren’t going to give one for a 30 year old DE/sack specialist.

I guess
He’s ideal size for 3-4 OLB and he’d be reasonably cheap for the next two years. Just a thought.

Yeah but we all know (from experience) that there is no guarantee that he’s going to transition easily to OLB from DE. He could, some have, but many haven’t. He wants a new contract, he wouldn’t be cheap at all cause one of the reasons he wants out is cause of the money and the Giants don’t want to pony up the dough.

Yeah
And when a player who already has a questionable motor isn’t getting paid what he wants… Well, I guess that isn’t the best of combinations.

Is certainly big enough at 260. Would be a great size for a OLB in a 3-4. He’d probably take on the run better then any of the Linebackers (Jones, Walden, Zombo) because of his size and experience of taking on Blockers as a DE. Not saying we should get him, because he would probably struggle in pass defense. Need a guy that’s great in Pass coverage and avg rushing not the opposite way around. Maybe it would work though because Capers has multiple schemes and gimmicks. He’d have a lot to play with then.
Walden
I agree w/ Wisfan… I think Walden has the most upside. He’s the more explosive pass rusher, at least right now and if he improves his run D, he should be the starter. I like Zombo too, but he’s gotta improve this pass rush repetoire instead of just using a power rush. Zombo could easily win the job tho and I wouldn’t be upset. They seem like the best options.

Isn’t Walden already 25 already though? I think what we saw last year from Walden is pretty much what we’re going to get. He could probably get a little better with more experience but only to a degree. That being said, I did like him. I don’t think he’s a better pass rusher than Zombo or Jones, but he seemed to do everything else pretty well.
I’d like to see how (or if) Zombo can develop some more.

Kevin Greene
Yeah Walden is a little older, 25 sounds right… I think he can improve alot more w/ good coaching. Don’t know if he’s ever had top level coaching like he’ll get from Greene. So I can see him improving quite a bit yet. Zombo may well win the job, and I wouldn’t be unhappy if he did. Just based my initial thinking on Walden having better athleticism and both he and Zombo improving at the same rate.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Greene and Capers
are the reason I haven’t been worried about the “other” OLB spot. I think they will be able to get either Walden or Zombo to make a big improvement this year.
Jones
Maybe I’m seeing something that isn’t there, but I’ve been waiting for him to break out for a couple years. If it hadn’t been for injuries, I think he’d have been an entrenched starter on the outside. Of course, the injuries are a problem, so it’s hard to really count on him for a full season. I think because of the depth issues, we’re going to see a lot of “safties as linebacker” formations. It’s not like they run from the base set all that often anyhow, and I think they’ll be creative in their packages to keep guys rotatiing in and out.
I voted Zombo
I chose Zombo mostly because the Pack gave him the job back for the Super Bowl and Walden seemed to fade after the one awesome performance. However, I think that the Pack should be able to rotate them both some, keeping them both fresh throughout the game. Perhaps Zombo in on the earlier downs and Walden coming in on third down situations?
What do I think?
Pretty much this:
I want to have a favorite among these three players, but I don’t know which one of them should be the starter. I can point to a big game, or big moment, for each of them, but injuries held back all three to various extents last season.

Walden
Zombo is ok but Walden has more intensity IMO, I still Wanna see us go after someone in the draft next year in the early rounds

Asid from Week 17
The stats don’t back that up. Walden had half his total tackles in one game. Roughly speaking, Zombo was at about 3 total tackles/game, Walden about 2.5, but, again half his total was in one game. Walden had one more sack than Zombo, but Zombo had 2 more forced fumbles.
Aside from week 17, not sure where Walden’s intensity showed itself. Zombo did work out in the offseason on his pass rush (with McDonald and Lang).
Zombo!
Both Walden, 3 year pro last year, & Zombo, rookie not drafted, played well. However I think over the long haul, and with more experience, Zombo will be the better player.

I would expect to see Dom find uses for all three and just keep sending them. We all keep hoping to find the next Clay Matthews on the other side, but really there aren’t many close to him.

Finding ready made 34 OLB in the draft is very difficult. As much as I would love to see Thompson spend a 1st round pick on one, I don’t think its too likely. Thompson would have to know he found someone like that… And its the most difficult position to project, other than maybe QB in the draft. Most of the great 34 OLB have been drafted later and developed their skills over a few years before they are ready to step in and play. I expect Thompson to keep using low to mid round picks on projects, similar to the way Pitts does it.

Zombo
Zombo is the most consistent of the 3. He also has the best bull rush, and it’s a lot easier to develop a speed rush as opposed to a bull rush. Considering Zombo already has a sufficient bull rush as a rookie, I think he can work on generating a speed rush to become a more effective pass rusher. He’s already stout against the run, and that’s VERY important.
Walden has a good speed rush. He was good in one game. That’s it. Granted, it was a pretty darn good game, but it was against the measely Bears. Until Walden proves he can do what he did against the Bears against some better offensive lines on a consistent basis, he’s just a one game wonder against the worst offensive line in the NFL. As of right now, he’s a KGB. In other words, he can come in on obvious passing down to rush the passer, but that’s it. Sorry to say this, but he’s a one-trick pony having a good speed rush, but he doesn’t have a bull rush and is a well below average run defender. I think Walden is a good guy to have for depth and someone that can come in on passing downs, but that’s it.
My vote goes to Zombo based upon his current ability, younger age, and consistency.
2011 Super Bowl Champs!
Zombo for me
Besides the awesome name and hair to complement Matthews, I think he has good upside. He is better in run D than the others, and has a strong bull rush. Once he adds some more pass rush moves and gets a little more instinctual, he will be an effective starter.
Out of those three though, Jones probably has the best upside. He also has a lot of work to do.
Jones
I voted Jones based off of his performance against the Steelers two years ago. The defense let up to many points that game but I still liked Jone’s performance. I think if he can get past the injuries with Kevin Green’s coaching he could be a valuable starter. Zombo would be my number two because of the way he stepped up in the Super Bowl. Walden looks lost to me at times in Dom Caper’s defense which can be quite complex. I don’t think any of them are the answer though and would like to see us focus more on the position next offseason.
