Ask Canal Street Chronicles: Opening Game Edition

Preseason is over! The long nightmare of watching games between 2nd stringers, 3rd stringers, and finally stadium vending employees, is over! The Saints and Packers get to be the special opening game of the season, which is the second year in a row the Saints have been involved and the 3rd time since 2007.

I don't know the statistics on opening game for the Packers, so whoever does know, tell me in the comments and I'll update the post...if I'm not feeling lazy (hint: I'm always lazy).

But please, use this thread to ask any questions you want answered about the Saints. I'll try to answer what I think will be the most asked questions below the jump!

*Please rec this post to keep it up till next Thursday.!!*

Star-divide

1. I'm very excited about the offense, and kind of worried about the defense. I have a feeling the game is going to be a shootout, and the winner will be the team who has the ball last. If it does become a defensive game, the Packers are going to win...easily.

2. Matchups to watch: Drew Brees vs. Secondary (It's interesting to see which Brees is going to show up)

O-line vs. Clay Matthews (REALLLLY worried about the possibility of Bushrod going one on one with him.)

Saints pass rush. (One of the keys for the Saints is going to be getting to the QB. The pass rush has been very mediocre during the preseason. If Rodgers has all day...well...)

3. In his spare time, Drew Brees is known to walk around New Orleans and willing people back to life. Though so far, he's only managed to bring back 2 people and a cat.

4. Yes, Sean Payton's balls do in fact weigh more than his head.

5. YES I'M GLAD REGGIE'S GONE, AND I HOPE HE BURNS IN HELL DOES WELL IN MIAMI!

I have very weird feelings about the defense.

Ask me how I felt about the defense a month ago, I would have told you best Saints defense in a decade.
Ask me now, and I’m VERY uneasy.

The talent is clearly there. The Saints D-line added a mix of top veteran FA and young rookies. Linebackers are filled with young guys with potential. The secondary is still dangerous with Malcolm Jenkins as the FS, Harper as the dangerous in the box SS. Greer, Porter, and Robinson as starters (Porter and Robinson have yet to be named as the starter or nickel.)

Yet…I’m still so very worried. Like, it’s worse than last year- even though the talent is better across the board.

Do you feel your defense is better, worse, or the same as last year?

Good question Mike. There’s still a degree of uncertainty. Lack of pass rush and tackling are my main concerns. I sure hope it’s better, it’s got to get better.

That's interesting. You know what makes me sad? YOU DO!!! Maybe we should chug on over to mambypandyland...or maybe we can find some self confidence for you YA JACKWAGON!!!!!!

Sorry, but...tackling, haha.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

What must the Saints do to win?

As you said if this becomes a defensive game the Packers win. A shoot out (Packers D giving up a ton of points) seems unlikely from my point of view but you never know.

What are your areas of concern for the starting players?

Re: What must Saints do to win.

Control Aaron Rodgers. The Saints need to keep Rodgers in the pocket. He gets out, he could probably make it into the endzone on every play, thanks to our inability to control a running QB. However, he needs to be pressured. I don’t trust the pass rush, so a lot of blitzes and force Rodgers to adjust. Chances are, he’ll do well. But it’s the Saints best chance.

Rec'd
Control Aaron Rodgers.

And it will be a very difficult thing to do. 2 things we don’t want to happen.

1. Having alot of time in the pocket
2. Escaping the pocket where he can 10 to 20 yds.

Lastly? The defense must trap Rodgers in the pocket. If they don’t, it will be a long night for the defense.

Is Drew Brees gonna lead my fantasy team to immortality?

He’s on my team. I wanted Rodgers, but he got taken a few picks ahead of me.

But, actually semi-serious question as opposed to the first one; Do you think your team will run the ball more often with Mark Ingram now in town? Or do you think it will probably be the same split-up of run and pass as it was in previous year(s)?

Or do you think it will probably be the same split-up of run and pass as it was in previous year(s)?

We are all hoping for balance unlike a ‘Pass Happy" team from last season. We had no running game like we did in 09. And now we have a better RB’s corps than before. That will take a lot of pressure off Brees. And hope our O’line improves from last year as well.

How deep do the skill players go?

How far down the depth chart can the Saints go with their WR’s before you start thinking “uh-oh” or just straight out face-palming?

Same question for the corners as well.

I mostly ask this because if it turns into a defensive battle then I think this is going to be the main key with the way both of these coaches like to sling the rock.

Bonus question: who is going to be the starting RB? Is it going to be Ingram or a different guy out of the platoon of RB’s you have?

by PackApologist on Sep 2, 2011 4:43 PM CDT reply actions

Colston, Henderson, Moore, Meachem, Arrington, Roby, and possibly Sproles depending on Payton’s creativity. I have faith in pretty much all of those guys to get it done with Brees.
Greer, Porter, Robinson, Patrick, Torrence (doubles as FS backup). I have faith in all of those guys to do the job assigned. If there’s any injuries, I start getting worried.

RB starter: Very likely to be Pierre Thomas. But it’s likely that him and Ingram are going to be splitting carries almost 50-50.

Not bad

Going four deep is pretty darn good in today’s NFL…usually a team is thankful if they can go three deep on corners.

by PackApologist on Sep 2, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

The only problem, is that they are often injured.

So the depth is good for a game. However, for a season, it’s not that good.

Isn't that always the case?

Still to even be good for one game is critical. Think of teams like the Vikings or Lions where it starts to get scary after you get beyond their top guy, or maybe top two. When facing teams that go three, four, or five deep at WR is just tough for those teams….even if they can get a good pass rush on. Then it’s just quick passes and watching the receivers go.

by PackApologist on Sep 2, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh,

Won’t get any arguments from me.

I think JShore said it all.

Despite the fact that I seem to be perhaps the only Viking fan who feels this way, I have already gone on-record saying that I believe all of the whining about cheap shots and lucky breaks in the NFCCG to be crybaby BS that is way beneath us… we had 60 minutes on the field to do WHATEVER was necessary, and we failed. Anything else is nothing more than loser-mentality in my mind, and surely won’t carry our team to a championship.

There has been way too much acrimony between us and the other teams’ fans this off-season. I suspect this post will fuel more mud-slinging disrespectful morons firing insults and general stupidity. When I first saw this post I was hopeful that it would be a calm diffusing commitment to the high-road, but honestly… I am disappointed.

Yeah how could I forget all that crap. I wish we could have blown them away and wouldn’t have to continuously hear about it. Their defense did really shut our offense down that game. We were fortunate to have the 5 turnovers.

It was a flip side to the Monday night 08 game. We dominated in stats and lost. 4 turnovers is why.

Man, he is so damn butt-hurt when it comes to the Packers…

Agreed. He hates the Packers. I’ve met alot of Packer fans who were the most down to earth fans and love their team. I played 3 card poker with a table of 5 packer fans and 1 Saints fan, me. I had my Brees Jersey on. There was friendly trash talk and we were all getting great hands. It was one of the funnest times playing 3 card poker.

I have a theory about that

I think there are some teams that have a similar culture and their fans reflect that. The Packers and the Saints have some similar storylines and moments. Both teams (and the Steelers) represent their respective cities in ways that other fans don’t get….so we generally get each other.

Now there are other fans….like Charger fans or Viking fans where they think they long suffer simply because their team hasn’t won anything or chokes it off when the big game is happening. They also have a fan base that tends to swell more than normal when they are winning and disappear when they are losing. They tend to get each other and think fanbases like Saints and Packer fans are crazy.

But who knows, I’m just one of those crazy stock holding Packer fans.

I think the running games could play a bigger role than expected

It doesn’t have to be much, but both teams are so deep at receiver that if the defenses have to start worrying about the run they could be in trouble.

Re: “Which Brees is going to show up?”
Do you mean the Brees that throws for 350 yards and 4 TDs or the one who throws for 250 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT?

I predicted a very high scoring close game in a 38-37 loss to you guys. I hope I’m wrong. It’s very rare to beat the defending world champs on opening night in their house. I’m hoping we can stop the run, and hoping the defense doesn’t blitz too much, but don’t let Rodgers run either.

Yeah, to a degree.

However, I’ve always been of the opinion that Lambeau and Packer fans are TOO accomodating to other teams and their fans! We barely get a homefield advantage in that way, cuz fans of the opponent have absolutely no reservations about going to Lambeau. Not that they should be afraid to buy tickets, but nothing wrong w/ verbally harrassing fans of other teams. Brought a friend to a GB/Dal game at Lambeau and there were probably over 30% cowboy fans at the game. That didn’t make for much of a home field advantage for the Packers.

I like that idea that people feel welcome there though. Especially considering the recent events at sporting venues this year….

On the radio they were talking about solutions to that and mentioned that certain fan bases were fine just the way they were because they are there for the sport no matter the time of year (GB was one of the ones they mentioned) and I’m good with that. You know, I love it

As much as I get views like Stroh’s where people say we are too accommodating and we lose home field advantage, I prefer having the stories like this go out. It’s that level of hospitality and accommodation that makes Lambeau special and makes it the Mecca of the NFL, and one of the best destinations in all of American sports. In the end that’s damn good for the City of Green Bay and its tourism (and since that’s where I’m from and where I plan to make my home when starting a family that trumps a bit of homefield advantage thing).

The other part of the story is that I don’t think we cede too much of our homefield advantage. It’s hard to come back Packer tickets. I don’t care what type of fan you are, it’s just damn tough (or damn expensive) to be able to get in the gate. Basically the whole bowl is season ticket owners (with the exception of a few hundred for people who live in Brown County) and that season ticket owner list is sitting around 90,000 on it. That naturally decreases the amount of visiting team fans in attendance. The only game where I thought there were too many of the opposing fans in the stands was the last Vikings vs. Packers game and that one can be chalked up to the amount of Favre fans in attendance at the game….after all there are bunches of those people who still own Packer season tickets (for example if you remember R4F he swore that he still owned Packer season tickets and wouldn’t dream of selling them even though he also swore that he was a Viking fan and would never go back to being a Packer fan).

by PackApologist on Sep 5, 2011 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

after all there are bunches of those people who still own Packer season tickets

With all the true Packer fans waiting on that list, those idiots should have been cut off.

And R4F swore/guaranteed a lot of things… but I would imagine the closest he got to Lambeau Field was having a picture of it in his mom’s basement/bedroom.

A part...

It’s that level of hospitality and accommodation that makes Lambeau special and makes it the Mecca of the NFL, and one of the best destinations in all of American sports.

But its the history of the stadium that makes it a mecca of sport. When you step in Lambeau you feel the history of it. Its that reverence and history that makes it a mecca. Hospiitality plays a part, but it would still be a mecca/shrine due to the history it has and the number of immortal NFL games played there.

You've been Stroh'd™!!!

by Strohman on Sep 5, 2011 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

No doubt

I just think one feeds into the other. Fans love to travel there because of the total picture and a big part of that picture is the hospitality. We're certainly capable of playing excellent football in domes.

However, I disagree that we’ve lost any tundra advantage (as a recent example, we beat the stuffing out of the Giants at Lambeau, 45-17).

Brett Favre may have screwed up our frozen tundra advantage in the past with his awful playoff interceptions, but I don’t see that happening with Aaron Rodgers and our D.

by mike_o on Sep 7, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The Packers have an .813 win percentage at home over the past two years.

I don’t think we’ve lost any kind of home-field advantage at all. In fact, I think we’ve gained more advantage at home, especially considering we were 28-24 at Lambeau Field from 2003-2008 including playoffs (26-22 outside of the playoffs during that same time span).

That is an overall .538 win percentage at home including playoffs, and .542 in the regular season.
