Ask Windy City Gridiron Virtually Anything

Hey guys and gals, here we are at the first of the two match-ups that I simultaneously look forward to/dread every season.

The Packers are coming down to Soldier Field this week, and man, these two teams play each other tough. Free free to drop any questions you might have about any of the following topics:

  • Our insane Offensive Coordinator
  • Our not-particularly-good Offensive Line
  • Our lack of depth at key positions

...or any other topics that strike your fancy. I and some others will do our best to try and get you answers, and if not, well, we'll just make something up.

Oh, and, congrats on that Super Bowl or whatever. While I don't necessarily like the Packers, I've always had respect for a franchise that's run the right way, and has a true sense of tradition for the game. Kudos to you for that.

If you could drop a rec or two to keep this near the top of the list, that'd be great.

Fire away!

Greg Olsen

What are your feelings on the departure of Olsen? I know Martz doesn’t really use the tight ends much, but it seemed to come out of the blue and I think hes a good young player.

by tmoneyttime1 on Sep 21, 2011 12:25 PM CDT reply actions

I thought it was a terrible move for the bears,

they got a 3rd rounder back but Olsen was a top target and I thought they would be looking for more targets rather than shelling away one. Im also curious to know how a bears fan feels about it.

Greg Olsen

Ok, so here’s the thing about Greg Olsen—I like the guy quite a bit, and I think he’s got a lot of talent. That said, he was not a fit for where this team was going forward.

Olsen is a great receiver, he has a lot of qualities that you look for but, he was lacking in some areas that would be key for the Bears going forward. He’s not a great pass-blocker (an absolute must in the Martzfense), and even for his size, he showed a tendency to shy a bit from big hits, earning himself a “Charmin” moniker from many folks at WCG.

Martz’s tight ends need to be double-threats—they need to be able to block effectively, and also be good at getting out into space to catch. Olsen was great at getting the match-up—he was too big for linebackers and defensive backs to cover particularly well.

In the end, part of me was sad to see him go, but I’d rather it be nwo andg et some value for him, than let him have unproductive field time and get nothing.

I hated it, HUGE fan

Olsen has led or been tied for the touchdown lead amongst bears recievers for the past 3 season and he made his fair share of plays. He usually did well against you guys so thats always a pluss =).

Like Kev said Martz never utilized him was olsen a great blocker? No. Did he improved noticeably? Yes. He was a good weapon and Jay trusted him alot and now the offense is carried by forte.

In the end getting the 3rd from carolina was higher than many of us expected but i hated to see him go.

Him and Cam are going to do good things

Yeah, my first thought when I saw that he was traded was that I was happy that I wouldn’t have to watch him make big 3rd down catches against us anymore.

He seemed like he was Cutler’s security blanket.

He was.

Cutler needed to lose that to mature as a quarterback.

Granted, you need blockers, too, but one step at a time.

In retrospect

it is obvious that the Bear’s master plan of sending Olsen over to Carolina so that he could team up with an obvious (cough, cough) franchise QB in Cam Newton and deliver the Packers a week 2 upset did not work out. Therefore, it was a bad move.

Horrible

the replacement in Kellen Davis does not have the talent or potential level of a Greg Olsen.

Greg Olsen though he may not have been the best blocking te is still on equal terms if not better than Kellen Davis at it… Like Bear Lovin said noticeable improvement, the part where its clear to decide who was better is in the passing game. The tough catches and third down conversions Olsen brought to the team Davis has yet to produce.

You bring in a Roy Williams to give Jay Cutler a big receiving target but you let go of one of his most valuable weapons, and now instead of having a starting pro bowl caliber te you now have an above average at best one… Horrible move

I respect your OPINION but i also value the FACTS, To save time, lets just ASSume IM NEVER WRONG

All things being equal who do you find more annoying? Pack fans or Viking fans?

I get that you hate everything Packers more. I respect that as it comes from our log rivarly, but which fanbase just grates against your nerves more?

I only ask because even though I will always find the Bears more hated and the bigger rival there is just something about Viking nation that gets under my skin more than your average Bear fan. Maybe it’s due to the general repsect beween our fan bases, maybe it’s that I deal with more peope from MN than IL, but tis’ something I would love your perspective on.

by PackApologist on Sep 21, 2011 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

This is me speaking purely for myself

and not on behalf of WCG—-Vikings fans. Unequivocally.

They seem to have less history of the game embedded, and more of the territorial pissing fights. While that’s definitely not true of all of them, and I’m usually hesitant to paint an entire fanbase by its bad seeds, the Vikings fans I tend to come in contact with are….how should I say it politely…uncool.

Packers fans, on the other hand, while you still have your “winners” (which I will fully and readily admit, the Bears have also), I don’t feel like I say “That guy’s an a-hole” nearly as often when talking about Packers fans. And I had to be the kid in the Bears jersey when we lived in Horicon for 7 years when I was a kid.

As someone who grew up in a split Packers/Bears household,

I can safely attest to the fact that as much as we loved to hate the other person’s team, there is also tremendous respect for the people, as we all knew and accepted that they simply cheered for a different team. In 2003, at the height of my early anti-Bears phase, I still bought my grandfather (a lifelong Bears fan) a DVD of the “Super Bowl Shuffle.”

As for the Vikings, my dad went to undergraduate school in Minnesota, when Bud Grant was in his heyday as the Vikings’ coach. So Minnesota hatred is something that everyone in my family not only agrees on, but also uses as a unifying force at all times, meaning that if the Packers or Bears are playing Minnesota, we all cheer for Chicago or Green Bay. This happens every season, regardless of how good the Packers or Bears are.

he looks like he could develop into someone pretty decent. We’ll see, though, if health is something he can maintain.

Fortunately, defensive line will always be our deepest position, as long as Jerry Angelo is around. Nevermind that need for back up corners, or an offensive line who can block 5 pass rushers.

As a Wisconsin fan

Dane Sanzenbacher INFURIATED me. He doesn’t have blazing speed, but he has incredible field awareness and makes ridiculous plays to grab poorly thrown passes (his QB was not particularly good, but LOLOakland took him in the 3rd round).

If Chicago gives him a chance, he can be something special.

Lance Briggs wants a new contract from the team.

And people have said that Forte deserves one as well. If you had your choice, who would get the big contract? Is it also a distraction on the team do you think?

Forte.

Without Forte, this offense is D.O.A.

I’ll tell you what I told CSC last week about Briggs:

He got 6 years, 36 million, most of it in the first three years.

After those three years, he decided he wanted more. From ESPN Chicago:

Briggs formally submitted a trade request last week, but it’s falling on deaf ears. He has three years left on his contract and no leverage in the matter. "What he’s doing is not something that hasn’t been done here in Chicago and around the league," Angelo said. Meanwhile, Briggs says nothing has changed for him on the field as he continues preparations for Sunday’s opener against the Falcons.

From rotoworld:

3/1/2008: Signed a six-year, $36 million contract. The deal contains $13 million guaranteed, including a $4 million signing bonus, a $3.75 million roster bonus in the first year, a $4.75 million roster bonus in the second, and a $3.3 million roster bonus in the third. Annual $250,000 workout bonuses are also available. 2011: $3.65 million, 2012: $3.75 million, 2013: $6.25 million, 2014: Free Agent

So, as you can see, in addition to 6 years, $36 mil, 13 was guaranteed, and he had 15.8 MILLION in roster bonuses. Hardly a chump deal. I can still understand he’s unhappy he doesn’t make more, but so are most people, and they’re not going to their boss and asking to be swapped with a different company.

I know very little about your WRs.

So… who are they? And who is #1, #2, etc.

by mike_o on Sep 21, 2011 3:28 PM CDT reply actions

Our WR depending on injury will be

Hester and Knox if Roy and Bennett are out.

Originally #1 and #2 were Williams and Hester. Why? We dont even know.

The most consistent is Bennett, Solid hands, good routes, deceptive speed and will make the tough catch and take the hit.

Knox had the most yards and tied olsen for most td catches so it was surprising to see him get demoted and not even be able to compete.

Hester and Knox are notorious for getting mugged by opposing Db’s and not doing anything about it. (last week).

Sanzenbacher- has looked good similar to bennett he is a shifty guy with good hands but he is a undrafted rookie and will look like it.

Williams- looked good week one made some catches and i dont think he dropped anything (shocker) but he is hurt and is sorely missed.

Kick Returns

I haven’t really had a chance to look at the details of the Bears’ first two games. How have they been handling kickoffs? Has Hester been taking kicks out from 6-to-9 yards deep in the end zone? Have opponents been adjusting their kickoffs to deny him the chance to return with pooch kickoffs or anything?

by wibrownguy on Sep 21, 2011 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

Hester and Knox are running them out

Hester is still confident in his abilits and many forget that Knox was a probowl returner his rookie year.

They are taking Knees if they dont see a chance to return it but they will take their chances

by Bear Lovin 21 on Sep 21, 2011 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

They're pretty much willing

to bring just about any kick out if they think that they might sorta maybe see a hole forming somewhere. It’s Hester’s gift, and it’s his curse. If he runs North-South, he’ll find that gap and then he’s gone.

When he starts running east-west, well, it’s him running about 30 yards to net 4.

How much has Martz been utilizing Forte’s ability to catch? I think that’s what I’m most worried about. A simple check down seems like an automatic 10 yard gain against our defense these past two games.

I dont know if its him utilizing forte or Cutler having no other option to go to

When Forte gets the ball in the open field he is as dangerous as it gets, he has great speed, he is elusive (juked Dunta Robinson BAAAAD) and many people forget he is 6’2 so he wont go down easy. With 15 catches (10 vs Saints) Forte is our best reciving option because honestly Knox/Hester cant get open against decent dbs.

To your point last week forte took what should have been 4 yard loss into a 11 yard gain i know it sounds like im sippin the kooliad lol. If im greenbay i make hester or knox beat me and take forte away in the ground and air.

Sounds to me

Like Capers will put Woodsons on Forte and take his chances w/ Tramon and Sheild against your pedestrian WR. TE aren’t much to worry about, so LB’s should be able to match up w/ them pretty easily.

Martz has to be the dumbest OC in the league. I get Olsen didn’t fit his scheme, but when you have a talented player, you find a way to adapt your scheme to unilize him. Not that Olsen is a Finleyesque TE or anything, but he’s a pretty good reciever. Why not just make him a WR and use him as such? Makes no sense!

Your preaching to the choir amigo

Olsen took on the challenge and became a better block i mean he is a receiving tight end he is not going to transform into OL.

Putting him in the slot, putting him in the backfield with cutler in shotgun, jump ball in endzone i could go on and on with the mismatches Olsen created. Martz really screwed up.

The loss of Olsen didnt show up at all against Atlanta but against a team like the Saints that took everyone away we had no one to step up.

You guys still want that Jermichael Finley? we have a spare 3rd round pick ;) lol

Yeah I didn't get that move either.

Olsen is a guy who can cause headaches when given the chance. I don’t know about blocking, but I would assume he is better than average. Just mind-boggling unless there was something internal the public didn’t know.

That dog just won't hunt.

by Bush League All Star on Sep 21, 2011 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Olsen was a freak

of a tight end, because he was big and fast for a tight end and caused mismatches.

He wasn’t quite wideout fast, though, and his speed would have relegated him to 4th receiver, which, in the Martz offense, is basically the tight end, so then you have to go back to the fact that he didn’t really block very well, and…yeesh.

Ask more questions where I can brag about something on the team…this is getting painful.

Wouldn't call him a freak.

A good reciever? yes… A freak and matchup nitemare? Not hardly… He was stiff changing directions from what I saw and didn’t get in/out of breaks as good as a top athlete. He had great combine numbers, but as a former S and C coach thats easy to train for. Having overall athleticism being able to elevate and contort in the air for the ball, getting in/out of breaks is what makes a great athlete and matchup nitemare. Olsen tests well cuz he trained for it. Clear from watching that Finley is a much better overall athlete and mismatch. Olsen not so much.

Dude is a BIG BOY 6’7 about 260. I dont expect him to run down the seam but going to him on some 5-7 routes to move the chains will help Jay.

If you see some of his catch vs ATL (he had none vs NO) he was a load to bring down took 4-5 falcons to finally get him down.

He needs to be targeted in the Redzone as well just on his height advantage but alas that makes too much sense for Martz.

How's the field surface expected to hold up this year?

Not really an issue for this weekend, but did they invest the effort to make major improvements to the field over the offseason? Or is the playing surface going to be reduced to a quicksandy oatmeal looking quagmire again by the time mid-November rolls around?

by wibrownguy on Sep 22, 2011 12:20 AM CDT reply actions

Nobody ever expects it to hold up.

It’s still grass, it’ll still get re-sodded several times this season, and it’ll still be dead and hard as a rock when November/December rolls around.

The argument is still between the Parks District and the Bears over whether to change the turf. The Bears are hesitant to do field turft because they haven’t seen much in the way of studies showing it’s any better than grass, but the Parks department aren’t good enough at their jobs to keep it looking decent, because they keep scheduling other events on it (soccer games, u2 concerts, etc), and tearing up the field on off weeks.

I know this has probably been beaten to death

How is Chicago as a whole feeling about Jay Cutler? If Martz does find himself in the hot seat or worse, do you think Cutler would do better with a different OC?

by stratefaced on Sep 22, 2011 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

I think we all feel bad for him

because there’s a very real, very scary chance that he get severely injured this season.

He has his knocks—he can hold the ball too long, and rely on his arm to make throws he shouldn’t be throwing, but right now, he has NO CHOICE but to play scared—who knows what’s coming around on his blindside?

Another coordinator would probably be great—but only if they play to their strengths. Cutler is great on the move, out of the pocket, and has the arm to make that throw once a play breaks down. He’s not your ideal candidate for a seven step drop pocket passer, but he can only run the plays that are called.

If there’s another repeat of the Saints game this season, you can be guaranteed Martz is done. He might be anyways, but any repeat of that seals it.

From what i see most fans like him as our QB.

You guys may not know what its like having so much of a circus at that position. (going from favre to rodgers). But as a fan getting Cutler was one of the best things to happen for this offense . Cutler is as tough as it gets in the NFL after the beatings he takes and puts up IMO fairly good numbers with a lack of a true #1 WR and the worst o line in….. well a while.

Many say hell never be elite. Well look at the other qbs in the league.
(in no order)

Brady
P. Manning
A-rod
Rivers
Big Ben
Romo
Ryan
Freeman
Stafford finally looks good as well

Of these guys they all of somewhat of an offensive line and all those QBs have atleast ONE good weapon. some have many like Ryan Rivers Romo Brady Arod.

If Angelo can ever get Cutler a LEGIT WR he can and will take his game to the next level.

Qbs have won without a great WR and no o line before but its extremely difficult to do it without both.

Is this why

Cutler is as tough as it gets.

He took himself out of the NFCCG?! LMAO

No he didn't.

He was taken out because he couldn’t plant and throw. The medical staff made the decision, not Cutler.

Please

He walked himself to the sidelines! He took himself out of the game… How many QB’s do you see take themselves out of the NFCCG? Never seen it before and I’ve been watching since the 70’s! Not like QB’s are required to be extremely mobile. SHould have told his OL its on them to keep him upright cuz he’s a limited!

He couldn't throw cux he had a knee that hurt a little?!

Again… PLEASE!!! He walked HIMSELF off the damn field! That tells me he took himself out of the game! Other than maybe Rhomo, I doubt any other good QB would do that. They would play until they were FORCIBLY removed from the game!

Romo might be starting to change that perception too...

pretty tough of him to play with a busted rib and punctured lung, though maybe not the wisest.

Romo's problem isn't toughness...

It’s his failure to come through when the game is on the line.

You're right...
Actually the showed Cutler talking to Hanie

Going over some photo stuff, formations, etc… So he helped hanie a little anyway. We don’t know how much he helped if it was after every series, or only the once!

As far as the MCL, everthing you said is spot on to what I learned in Athletic Training classes. Your fine moving straight, but can’t make any sudden cuts on that knee. Obviously I can’t stand Cutler, but I’m not bashing him for not being able to play!

This story was kinda DOA after the reality of the injury was known...

it was run with because of the lack of real information and perceptions after the game but nothing thats been said since implies that he “took himself out of the game”. Its funny to joke about as an opposing fan because we eat that shit up, but its not reality.

Its difficult to question Cutler’s toughness the past couple years considering the beating he has taken and is continuing to take this season.

Even when Cutler manages to stay upright, he still has to plant before throwing

If he can’t do that, he shouldn’t play. It’s really that simple. Why are people still questioning this?

I may giggle in glee whenever he throws a bad pass, but I also trust that professional athletes know when they are and are not capable of playing – to say nothing of the staff*. Sigh.

I'm going to respectively disagree with you on the whole "Cutler is tough as nails thing"

I don’t really see it that way. Canthe guy take a shot? Absolutely! No doubt that he has learned how to take some serious punishments. Does that make you tough? No.

In my mind, toughness, grit, determination; these things come after you’ve been hit and what do you do once you’ve been hit and pick yourself up off the tarmac. Whenever Cutler gets hit, he seems to either 1) look around and waive his hands in hope of a flag, or 2)take a second, catch his breath, and try to recover from the blow.

He does not jump up and smack the defensive guy on the helmet and tell him good hit (letting the defensive guy know that the hit had no effect on him). Instead, he tells the defense that the hits take a toll on him.

He even tells the defense that he’s affected by his footwork; dancing around the pocket, rarely ever setting his feet.

Hits take a toll on everyone, of course, however, if the QB leads his opponents to think that they aren’t hitting him good, they get discouraged, and the QB gains that mental advantage. This is what Favre, Elway, Steve Young, Aikman, and the other “tough as nails” QBs did; they took the mental advantage from the defenses. This is why Tim Tebow was so feared in college. Players saw his intensity, blood stained, and fiery determination, and were imtimidateed. Does this make Tebow a better QB than Cutler, no way. It just is meant to show how true grit intimidates defenses.

Whenever Cutler gets hit a few times, the defense gets the advantage. He forgets to look downfield and every play turns into a modified screen pass to forte. He gets happy feet and is no longer effective.

If the Bears can protect him, scheme differently to give him better options and get the ball out of his hands before he gets pummeled, he is a very good QB, but Mike Martz is training Cutler, much like a dog is trained, that any time more than it takes to drop back to pass results in pain. Ask any behavioral therapist and they’ll tell you the same thing. He is learning to take the punishment, not learning to make opposing teams pay for the blitz.

I can’t remember a game where Cutler has been hit hard a few times and has lead his team to a victory. Until he does so, I can’t consider him a tough QB. —-Insert Tony Romo here.

How do you guys feel about Angelo?

My buddy on the Merc thinks he’s average and deserves to stay as long as the Bears are in the playoff hunt every year. My opinion is that he is only slightly behind the departed JiM Hendry as the city’s worst GM. An I giving Angelo too little credit, or do most Bear fans want him gone?

Thanks

by White92 on Sep 23, 2011 9:48 AM CDT reply actions

You're giving him roughly the right amount of credit.

He’s had his successes, which have been good ones, but his failures have been so much more glaring that it’s hard to see the good moves.

Jerry Angelo has what seems to be an obsession with defense, particularly the defensive line. This is largely what he knows from his time in the league, so I can’t necessarilyf ault him on it, but at the same time, even Matt Millen would be able to tell that the Bears need more offensive linemen who can play at the NFL level consistenly, and produce. With even an average offensive line, this team could really, really go places.

I would say that most fans probably wouldn’t be that sad if he was gone. That said, if they do well this season, or god forbid, win something really important, I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere. Nor will Lovie. Or probably even Martz.

No Angelo fan at all.

But in your D scheme you MUST get pressure on the QB w/ the DL. Makes alot of sense to focus on the DL when it is so important to your overall defensive success. Meanwhile, sitting in zone coverage most of the time doesn’t take DB’s that are much more than average, especially if the DL is getting pressure on the QB.

even Matt Millen would be able to tell that the Bears need more wide receivers drafted in the first roumd.

What are your initial thoughts on Carimi?

I vaguely remember hearing that he was hurt, but I’m not too sure.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

by msc32887 on Sep 24, 2011 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

Carimi is out for a month or more with a dislocated knee cap.

But before he was injured, he was making good progress and definitely proving he was a first round talent. Like any rookie, he needs some work, mostly in pass protection. But he’s a mauler in the ground game and his pass protection is passable even now.

The Bears were lucky that he fell to them.

I don't care how good GB is...

the last place I want to see GB play in the playoffs is Soldier Field again…. or even against the Bears.

GB did well this time, as sloppy as they play at times. I’m happy they escaped with a win.
