More On The Packers Win Over The Bears

Photo

The Green Bay Packers are sitting at 3-0 (along with the Lions and Bills) as one of the three remaining unbeaten teams. They've got some issues on defense to sort out (and special teams of course) but just a reminder that they've gotten off to a great start.

Green Bay Packers news | Green Bay Packers P Tim Masthay saw Chicago Bears' fake punt return, but no one else did | Green Bay Press Gazette. Make him the special teams coach! He's the only one who knows what's going on! I start to feel better about Shawn of the Dead Slocum after he adds Masthay, and WR Randall Cobb is looking good on returns, and then a near blunder like this happens.

On call, Newhouse delivers - JSOnline. The injury to RT Bryan Bulaga looked bad, but it's a being called a bruised knee. If he follows the same timeline as CB Tramon Williams (who looked like he suffered a serious injury in the Saints game, but it was a bruised shoulder) he might miss a game or two. I'd be worried before, but Marshall Newhouse played a lot better than I expected. He had some bad preseason games mixed in with some good ones, so I'm still worried about his consistency. He might not be so good next week.

Green Bay Packers news | Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley burns Chicago Bears coverage | Green Bay Press Gazette The Bears were short handed in the secondary with injuries to S Major Wright and S Chris Harris. Craig Steltz replaced them, and Finley had 3 TDs. They just didn't have an answer for him. And it wasn't just Steltz as one of his TDs was against LB Lance Briggs. He was a big advantage in this game.

Bears to wear alternate orange jerseys this week versus Packers - Windy City Gridiron. I don't like when the Bears get ready for hunting season. It just doesn't look like the Packers are playing the Bears.

Orange jerseys

Going against one of the best-dressed teams in the league (if not the best), the Bears decide to wear their awful orange alternates. The contrast made the Bears look even worse than they usually do in orange. Perhaps this loss will prompt Chicago to retire that eyesore and stick with the throwback design they sported last year when they hosted GB.

Newhouse

I think he’ll be just fine against Denver. And I’d rather see Bulaga ready against some of the Pack’s stiffer competition.

Newhouse!

Eh hemmmm? “Stiffer competition?” Lets not be complacent. The Broncos
are not a bunch of boy scouts coming in.

I think Newhouse did well against the Bears and will hold up if called upon next
week.

Bears bring an impressive pass rush too.

Definitely not overlooking the Broncos by any means. But I’d rather see Bulaga healthy for a contest against a team where the Packers might be forced to rely more on sustaining drives than the Broncos. Atlanta, for example, is a lot tougher at home than, where the Pack will face them.

Von Miller/Dumervil can be quite the combo.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Newhouse

Really impressed by him yesterday. I hope he can keep it up, a team can never have enough depth on the o-line

Four unbeaten teams

I know they’re easily forgettable, but the Redskins are still unbeaten too.

by wibrownguy on Sep 26, 2011 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

For the record, he did say 3-0, not unbeaten so the Redskins don’t technically fit into that category yet. But just think if before the season someone said after 3 weeks there would be 4 unbeaten teams, try to guess them…you think many would have guessed the Lions, Redskins, and Lions to be among the unbeaten ranks?!?

well of course Masthay spotted the fake return, he's the one who kicked the ball

so obviously he saw that it was on the other side of the field, while everyone else was looking downfield instead of up at the ball

Starks???

Starks seemed to be Bear Trap bait against the Bears and got hung out
to dry on nearly every carry. Did he get on the bad side of someone this
past week? It seemed to me that he was running lateral on most of
his carries and all the success we found was running North and South
as Grant did.

He did turn late on a dump off or screen as it may have been. Is he not taking
practices seriously or What?

yup!

He musta pissed someone on the offensive line off because he never got within a yard of the LOS.

by marcopo on Sep 26, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

This

He definitely looked hesitant but let’s not act like he really had anywhere to run on many of his carries. I said in the game thread yesterday, and I’ll say it again — it seemed to me that the Bears were really keyed in on him.

I don't know...

I read somewhere that he had lanes and just picked the wrong places to run. Maybe it was Vic Ketchman or JSonline or somewhere. Hell, it could have been here that someone said it.

he looked horrible

totally seemed like he was convinced that the cutback was so gonna be there and it never was. ever.

Starks basically just would take three steps forward, turn left or right, stop, and allow himself to be tackled.

at least Grant apparently paid attention in film study this week and stuck with the whole North & South thing that, you know, works against the Bears.

Bears unis

Looked so much better in the 60s and 70s when the blue was much darker, almost black, with a white “C” on the helmet. Or maybe it WAS black, I didn’t live in Chicago at the time (I do now), and the color TV technology of the time made it hard to tell. It also messed up the Vikings purple and made it look bluish too (somehow poetic justice there).

The orange unis are an abomination, they should always have the navy blue unis at home or it’s not Packers-Bears.

How many more wins do the Pack need to even out the lifetime record?

Orange Jerseys

I think the orange jerseys the Bears wore were throwback jerseys from the 1930s or something like that.

On the punt return..

Please clarify an issue…When Hester called for the “Fair Catch” the punt is basically dead..right? Cannot be advanced unless there is a fumble etc…Knox should not have been allowed to advance the ball..Correct? Because the fair catch signal tells the kicking team they cannot tackle anyone.

by Buddyruff on Sep 26, 2011 2:19 PM CDT reply actions

I'm assuming...

That Dave Toub made himself familiar with the rule before he decided to come up with that play. If if I had to guess I’ll bet that the fair catch only pertains to the player calling for it

According to

multiple sources, your reading of the rule is wrong. Occam’s razor is that Aikman and Buck don’t know shit about what’s happening on the field come the fourth quarter.

If a player calls for a fair catch, according to ESPN and Packers.com, the play is dead when the ball is caught. The answer for this conundrum is that the TV booth is clueless.

by GinSlinger on Sep 26, 2011 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

They were clueless but I'd be inclined to give them a pass on all...

the stupid crap they sad during that play only because everyone else was entirely confused on it as well. Nice play call.

As far as the coverage….there is no excuse. Though the ball was kicked from behind the defenders it was a call “Punt Left” which is exactly where it went. Either the coverage team had not confidence in the call or has no discipline. Either way, when an entire team does the wrong thing, looking embarrassing doing it, then it is the coaches fault.

See second clause

No opponent may interfere with the fair catcher, the ball, or his path to the ball. Penalty: 15 yards from spot of foul and fair catch is awarded.
A player who signals for a fair catch is not required to catch the ball. However, if a player signals for a fair catch, he may not block or initiate contact with any player on the kicking team until the ball touches a player. Penalty: snap 15 yards.
If ball hits ground or is touched by member of kicking team in flight, fair catch signal is off and all rules for a kicked ball apply.

by pdogville on Sep 26, 2011 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

Not what

Vic (no, mofo, not So’oto) Ketchem says

Here’s what I can tell you, per the rulebook, when a player on the receiving team makes a valid fair-catch signal and the ball is not touched by a player of the kicking team: "If the ball is caught or recovered by a teammate who did not make a valid fair-catch signal, the ball is dead immediately, but it is not a fair catch. The ball will next be put in play by a snap by the receiving team at the dead-ball spot (or at the succeeding spot after enforcement of any applicable penalties)." Reading that, it doesn’t sound as though Devin Hester signaled for a fair catch.

NB: though I don’t have a copy of the official rulebook, I’ll take Vic’s quoted text above the NFL.com “rulebook,” which has been shown to be incomplete.

Not sure that McCarthy agrees w Vic

“Frankly,” McCarthy said. “It was poor awareness by our coverage unit.”

Um

Doesn’t rule out the former. It can very easily be poor awareness by the coverage unit AND and a break of the rules. OR, it can be gawddam Occam’s Razor.

by GinSlinger on Sep 26, 2011 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions

punt snafu

we had that same play in high school. I was the guy doing the fair catch. Regardless, in MIDDLE SCHOOL (if not earlier) we were taught to find the ball in the air and track it. At some point, you transition from finding where it is going to watch the receivers. This is basic, basic, BASIC special teams! To be duped by something this basic, at this level, is simply inexcusable.

I should point out that our play in high school did NOT work very well because the kicking teams gunners watched the ball in the air. So, they have that going for them over that POS that Slocum presides over.

Long story short – Toub saw something on tape. He saw something so basic that was being ignored that he designed a play to exploit it. This was no mere coincidence. This was excellent coaching on his part, and terrible attention to the basic fundamentals on ours despite the fact that a kick LEFT was called and a kick RIGHT was executed.
