Would The Raiders Really Be Interested In Dom Capers?

NFL.com news: Packers DC Capers on Raiders' list of candidates. I've been a little slow to write about the rumor of Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers to the Raiders. While I believe they're truly interested in Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss, I don't think the same applies to Capers.

That's not a criticism of Capers, but I don't think his career path fits with Reggie McKenzie's plans. During his press conference, he made sure to convey that his focus is long-term. He's not looking for a one-year fix. Capers is a detailed professional who's been hired twice before as a head coach, and he'd be an improvement over some of their recent head coaches. But he's also turning 62 before the start of next season, and he'd only be a short-term solution. McKenzie should want to find someone who he sees as his head coach for the next five to ten years.

Anything else we hear about this between now and the end of the season will just be speculation. Winston Moss said he's not talking about it right now, and I'm sure Capers feels the same way.

Meh...

I think he’d rather stay here and be DC, rather than leave to OAK and be the head coach. I could be wrong, but he’s got a nice gig here in Green Bay.

Pretty much this...

I think he’s said he’d go after a HC job again, but why would he trade one DC job for another in a less successful environment (unless he’s having buckets of money thrown at him). Is he being considered for HC and Winston Moss for DC in Oakland? Then I could see it.

That is my thinking. He’s making great money, doesn’t have the pressure of the HC job, and he’s been successful and is growing his legacy every year he’s here.

I seem to recall reading an article last year in which Capers said that he’d like one more chance at a head-coaching job.

I’m curious what others think of who might replace Capers as DC, if he did leave? And would you be happy with the replacement?

If he doesn't take Moss with him

I think he’d be a good replacement.

13.

In '62, Green Bay's 7th Championship season, the Packers took a 10-0 record into Detroit on Thanksgiving, and lost. In '11 they took a 10-0 record into Detroit on Thanksgiving, and got it right this time.

In '07, the Packers hosted a playoff game against a Giants team that they had defeated during the regular season, and lost. In '11 they host a playoff game against a Giants team that they had defeated during the regular season, and, again, we’re gonna get it right this time!"

Perry would be my choice...

He’s got alot of experience and is a highly respected Asst Coach. Knows Capers and his schemes inside out and could add to that w/ his own ideas.

IIRC, Capers also said that it would have to be the Right situation for him to be a HC. He would only go somewhere where he would have a very good chance to succeed, as opposed to going to a team on the way down or something resembling an expansion situation.

THis year certainly wasn't growing his legacy.

I Want to see Capers turn things around next year on D. I think he’s kinda had a history of starting really fast w/ his Defenses and then stumbling in yr 3 or 4, for whatever reason. His legacy didn’t get better this year IMO. If he turns it around and they become a perennial top 5 D, however you want to define it, then his legacy grows.

I like Capers as our DC

And can we just get this headline out of the way: “Anyone on the Packers not named Mike McCarthy is on Reggie McKenzie’s list for potential head coaches.”

Has Capers ever said anything about moving on?

I think he’s one of those guys who is much better as a coordinator than they are as a HC.

It would definitely hurt if he goes—most of the defensive coaches right now are his guys, and would likely follow him if he leaves.

I seem to recall

His name coming up year after year, which to me seems like that wouldn’t be the case if some feelers weren’t getting put out by someone in his camp.

Would anything the Raiders do surprise anyone?

I realize Al Davis is gone, but isn’t his son still in the picture?

His son turned over the reigns to McKenzie. Go see an article on Yahoo by Michael Silver that talks more about Davis’ son…apparently he’s like Tommy Boy.

He just doesn't seem like HC material

Every time he gives an interview I think about how “strange” his personality is. Maybe that is just me, but now that I think of it, all of our top guys don’t have the most outgoing personalities (TT, MM, Dom)
