Saturday Playoff Open Thread: Saints at 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO - SEPTEMBER 20: Frank Gore #21 of the San Francisco 49ers runs against the New Orleans Saints during an NFL game at Candlestick Park on September 20 2010 in San Francisco California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

It's starting to get interesting in the NFC. The 49ers and the Saints are both very good teams, and the season will end for one of them. I could see the game going either way, but I think it's more likely that the Saints come out on top.

Of course, I thought the Saints would easily beat the Seahawks last year in the playoffs. If you see Frank Gore eating some Skittles on the sidelines: watch out. The Saints have been known to suck at tackling physical running backs.

Hi!

Stuck at work so I don’t get to watch. I’ll check in here when I can to see what’s going on.

December, 7 1941 may be a day that lives in infamy, but December 6, 2011 is a day that will live in AWESOMENESS!!! The day I became part owner of the Green Bay Packers!

Rooting for as fluky a win as possible, no matter the team.

Either the 49ers in a shootout, or the Saints in a defensive battle.

Rooting for an insane, emotionally exhausting game like last week's Broncos-Steelers

I don’t even care who wins if that’s the case.

For 2 reasons: 1) The winner will be poised for a letdown next week; and 2) It’d just be fun to watch.

That was a lame DPI

No where in the rule book states that you must turn your head around in order to avoid DPI. There was no contact until the ball got there, and the official couldn’t see if there was anyways because Grahams body was hiding him.

that is technically a concussion. Most of the minor ones go undiagnosed.

I wouldn't agree with that

Many other things can cause dizziness, causing you to get woozy, or to see stars. Plus, concussions are not understood well at all.

by Shoes31 on Jan 14, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

In this case

The way his body reacted to that hit makes it highly likely that it was a concussion. Sheehan’s right that many “minor” concussions go undiagnosed, especially in the NFL.

by Cheeseandcorn on Jan 14, 2012 3:58 PM CST up reply actions

Concussions are tricky to diagnose, really due to the lack of knowledge surrounding concussions.

Well Graham's back

so I guess whatever it was, it wasn’t bad enough to keep him out. So that makes me wonder then. What do they consider the limits on calling it a concussion that keeps you out? You’d think that after the McCoy hit against the Steelers they’d be coming down harder on letting players back in on suspected concussions

they just fly to the ball and lay the wood when they get to the ballcarrier. You’ve got Graham seeing butterflies and a Saint getting blown up at the 3 forcing the fumble……and this is just the first drive. If the Saints survive this, they’re going to be licking their wounds this coming week.

I'd like the Niners

Not by much. We’ve seen that the Saints can hang with us in a shootout, although not in cold weather yet. The Niners could hold us below our average, but there’s no way they shut us down with Rodgers quick release. The Niners never play in really cold weather and I think they could also have their issues, making them one dimensional on offense.

Ugh, the Red Wings have fans that disrespect other teams history like the Steelers, are overly adored by ESPN like the Patriots,

and ruined the 90s for the Blues like the Cowboys did to the Packers except the Blues don’t have a championship to make it okay. The Blues are much bigger Rivals with the Blackhawks but I hate every aspect of the Red Wings existence. The have “Hockeytown” cockily written across thier ice when they have the third most championships an the fourth most playoff wins in the NHL. (The Canadians and Maple Leafs top them in both) Most Red Wings fans don’t realize that Gordie Howe was thier best player and most of thier championships were in the first half of the 20th century, they seem to think hockey started in 1995 and Yzerman is the best player ever. I can describe enough how they are everything that is wrong about hockey. I hate to be so brash, especially since you are such a good, smart, and polite football fan but holy god the Red Wings, I mean, fuck.

ESPN doesn't give a fuck about hockey, there is nowhere near as much coverage about the Wings as the Patriots

This is just factually incorrect

most of thier championships were in the first half of the 20th century

They won 4 cups before 1950 (3 if you don’t count the one before they moved from BC) & 8 after that.

The Leafs haven’t won anything since ‘67. The Red Wings have the most championships of any American team, and I’ll be damned if I root for a French Canadian team.

Toronto is not in French Canada, only Montreal, an I'm not saying you have to be a Canadians fan

Im just saying if your are going to call yourselves “Hockeytown” which is more pretentious than the cowboys calling themselves “Americas team” and is insinuating rather than just being the most popular team in the country like “America’s team” does but that you are the hockey center of the universe you should have better than the third most decorated history by a large margin.
ESPN doesn’t cover hockey, the whomever is the defending SC Champs at the time, and the Red Wings, they get covered by ESPN compared to other hockey team even worse than the Patriots, they just suddenly hate hockey even though Hockey was the first major sport they ever broadcast and the reason why they are the WWL instead of the lumberjack championship channel
And four of Detroits cups were in the 50’s, I’m sorry to dare to exaggerate by less than a decade off the top of my head

I know where Toronto is.

The Canadiens are the only team that’s head & shoulders above the Wings. The Leafs have one more cup, but also haven’t won one in quite some time.

The Packers have won two championships since the ’60s & call themselves “TItletown.” The Wings have won 4 championships since the ’60s & call themselves “Hockeytown.” *shrug

The Packers also have the most championships, not the third most

If they had the most then I would have no problem with the “Hockeytown” thing

I'd also like to point out that based on this exchange you are the most knowledge Wings fan I've ever met by a large margin

So kudos to that. I’m sorry to lump you in with the others just because you cheer for them but most wings fans and the franchise itself just drive me and the rest of the country, especially other Blues fans and Avalanche fans (that was a very underrated rivalry you guys had before the lockout) absolutely insane

GB

Just punched it’s ticket to Indy. I’m very confident AR would have not thrown 2 picks and our WR"s would not have fumbled…

And if so.. we win that game going away.

Should we be worried...

that San Francisco seems to have discovered their Offfense?

Looking forward to the Packers three-peating and visiting President Ron Paul at the White House in 2013

No.

I’m gonna call it a fluke, set up by the fact that the Saints let them hang around.

We will NOT turn the ball over 5 times

And the game will be at Lambeau. Niners are not going to win next week.

Right

IMO New Orleans gave this game away.

SF’s D is great, but that O is so awful that the pressure on their D is tremendous. You take away even 1/2 of NO’s turnovers, this game is a comfortable 10 point NO win at least.

AR does not throw picks. GB’s skill players don’t fumble. (Except Cobb – and IMO MM will have the reins on him).

GB will win.

IMO vs NE in the SB.

I know

We are one of the best ever. Who cares if it’s recognized by others?

I dunno...

Having the best record ever in the middle of the NFL’s only 3peat?

That would’ve been sweet.

How about going 37-1 in the last two seasons of a three-peat?

It will be sweet.

When the defense is dealing hits like the niners were today, anybody can fumble

That first fumble was caused by pierre thomas getting concussed, not because of ball security.

Go Giants!
