Sunday Playoff Open Thread: Texans at Ravens

At least we have something to watch as we wait for the Green Bay Packers to play. I have to agree with Football Outsiders: this game depends on which version of Joe Flacco shows up for the Ravens. The Ravens should win, but the Texans can pull off the upset if Flacco struggles.

I wonder who’ll Bradshaw will want to win to become America’s “real hero”? That Tebow love was completely over the top or was it a little Brett Favre coming out of him knowing that Brady was about to surpass his career playoff win total?

I honestly wanted to smack him yesterday.

Texans offense

Is annoying me. They still haven’t had the courage to throw the ball beyond the first down marker in three drives. It’s not like the Ravens have a fearsome collection of cornerbacks. Someone should be open downfield.

Ravens offense

Is being like the anti-Texans. Flacco’s only completed one pass downfield (and even then Boldin might have been out) and keeps forcing it downfield to Flacco and Smith. Maybe a short pass to get Ray Rice open in space?

Random rambling coming up here.

Not related to this game, but something I’m wondering about.

In Atlanta, do you think the Falcons fans are getting frustrated with Matt Ryan? He’s now 0-3 in the playoffs, and the last loss looked bad for the offense. You could say that he was matched up against much better teams the first two times around, probably the third as well, but at some point, he has to overcome that. This just came up in my mind yesterday, after watching Alex Smith lead his team to a win in a game that they shouldn’t have won. I understand that sometimes it takes QB a little while to get playoff wins, but I’m wondering how much frustration is building up over Matt Ryan right now.

Contributor on Brew Crew Ball, Commissioner of Prognostikeggers, Owner of a broken sarcasm detector

by -JP- on Jan 15, 2012 1:29 PM CST reply actions

Tbh.

I don’t think Ryan is to fault. He probably could do more to help the team win, but I think the Falcons get away from their bread and butter run game. If anything, I am looking at that coaching staff (Mularkey is gone now though).

I am trying to mull over the stats right now. Ryan appears to play the game without risk. I think if he was allowed to air it out more. And it looks like, in a brief glance, the run game just shuts down in the playoffs.

That dog just won't hunt.

by Bush League All Star on Jan 15, 2012 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

I think more of the frustration should lie on Mularky’s lap as well as Smith’s with the play-calling. They went out and traded a lot of picks for Julio Jones and never made him a consistent deep threat as the lack of a vertical passing game did them in at the end.

Matt Ryan is a good quarterback but needs a offensive minded playcaller that doesn’t mind going vertical and take a few chances rather than close to the chest which is what the Falcons have done the past few years.

Practice makes perfect ...

I don’t think the Falcons practiced it enough as a lot of deep patterns require timing and accuracy and that requires a lot of reps. Something of which, or the lack thereof, didn’t help Ryan and his core of wide-outs.

Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

by hawks61 on Jan 15, 2012 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

I think people should accept him for what he is

he’s never going to be one of the really elite quarterbacks, he has too many limitations.

But he’s a good enough QB for them to win with, and he can make enough plays for a team with a solid running game and defense. Unfortunately, they don’t have a good enough defense right now, nor a good enough running game (more because of their line than because of Turner), so Ryan has too much on his shoulders right now and he’s not good enough to win under those conditions.

football does not build character, it reveals character.

by sheehan on Jan 15, 2012 1:39 PM CST up reply actions

Most of the complaints I see from Falcon fans are the following...

- The play-calling sucks (although, like BLAS stated above, Mularkey is gone)

- The offensive line isn’t that good (a lot of teams not named New Orleans say this, though).

Wonder if Houston will take a shot or two downfield with Johnson. Huge pass play could swing this game in their favor.

That, or Flacco throws a pick soon.

Still, have the feeling that whoever wins this game won’t be able to beat New England. Both teams don’t have enough firepower on offense.

So do either of these teams stand a chance against the Patriots?

Texans D can probably match up better against the Patriots O due to their LB’ers being a better match-up on Gronk and Hernandez, but the Texans O wouldn’t do enough I think.

by Shoes31 on Jan 15, 2012 2:16 PM CST reply actions

I think both of them have a real good shot at beating the Pats

the Pats are a paper tiger IMO, they haven’t beaten anybody

Oh no Ravens

The fact that they can’t put these guys away says a ton about the AFC

by airfigaro on Jan 15, 2012 2:17 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't so readily dismiss the Texans

they have a legitimate top 3 defense, and they have a lot of offensive talent as well.

were Schaub healthy, I’d say they’re easily the scariest team in the AFC

by sheehan on Jan 15, 2012 2:19 PM CST up reply actions

True

No so much dismissing the Texans, as wondering if the Ravens let the Texans and 3rd String Yates hang around at home, will they even have a chance against the Pats on the road?

by airfigaro on Jan 15, 2012 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

If Schaub was healthy, the Texans are probably the team to beat in the AFC. Heck, they probably get the #1 seed too. And if both Schaub and Mario Williams were healthy, I bet they would have been the favorites to win the AFC.

Still too early for that with the Ravens.

Flacco was a first rounder and he hasn’t been awful, wouldn’t be worth what they’d have to pay.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Flacco has generally been as good as they need him to be to win with that defense and running game

hence why they’ve been in the final 8 every year since he came into the picture.

He’s not great, but he does enough generally

Torrey Smith

He’s only got 1 catch, but the Texans have been using their best CB Joseph on him all game. That’s left Boldin on Jackson, who Boldin’s been beating all game long. Flacco to Boldin has basically been the only thing working for the Ravens.

by Brandon on Jan 15, 2012 2:51 PM CST reply actions

Is Jackson slower?

Maybe they don’t have anyone else that can match up with Smith’s speed. Haven’t been able to watch most of the game so I dunno, though.
