Fourth Quarter Open Thread: Giants at Packers

The Green Bay Packers defense did its part, but the offense missed out on an opportunity with an Aaron Rodgers fumble. Still they put three points on the board and end the quarter on the move for another score. Keep up the rally over the Giants.

Packers 13, Giants 20.

I mean I know he’s Aaron and all, but we’ve all known that if Rodgers is off the team will lose. The one time he wasn’t up to Rodgersian levels was the Chiefs game. I just can’t see it.

they want us to dink and dunk and use up time…

by PackFaninFL on Jan 15, 2012 6:20 PM CST reply actions

it's all because our guys on the edges aren't playing tight.

every game this year Tramon has been 8-10 yards deep at the onset of the snap… it’s not like he’s a bad cover guy either, but if you don’t give the guy something to think about at the line, they’re gonna have such an easy time for the WR’s.

and look-de-do what has happened this year, we’ve been shredded by the passing game all year long.

by Nels Winkler on Jan 15, 2012 6:21 PM CST reply actions

I think thats due to a lack of pass rush

Gotta play deep and cover longer. But on a blitz play tight

Sherrod was a good pick

You have the best QB in the game, you need to protect him. Clifton probably won’t be back next year. We didn’t know how Newhouse would progress with the lockout. And Brooks Reed benefits from JJ Watt alot.

I really don’t care if Dom Capers leaves for Oakland, since some of his play calls have been absolutely atrocious, especially playing zone on that third down and leaving a wide open hole in the middle of the field.

The defense has been fairly disappointing in some regards all year.

In terms of YPG, they were NFL-record awful. When the turnover margin flipped, they just couldn’t get it done.

The Packers have a better quarterback, a better roster, a better team, and this game is just a stupid joke.

I mean, the refs spotted the packers 14 points again (non fumble, blow to the head)

How could this happen?

Answer the Question

With the #28th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Green Bay Packers select…

Personally I want Melvin Ingram from South Carolina or Ronnell Lewis from Oklahoma.

by king.nothing on Jan 15, 2012 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Neither

I’m going with Nick Perry from USC. Ronnell Lewis did not impress me at all, and I think Ingram will struggle in a 34.

by Shoes31 on Jan 15, 2012 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

This defense needs significant overhauls.

The receivers had their worst game of the season, and the turnover margin flipped on the comforter-soft defense.

Well, this isn’t the first time a 15-1 team from the division has lost on the weekend of January 15th/16th…

Rodgers ran well.

Only 81 yds rushing between starks, grant, saine and kuhn. Also 2 costly fumbles by our backs.

Yep

Defense this year and last year is night and day. We had a pass rush, which let our corners play excellent in coverage, played excellent on third down, all that.

This postseason should end the passing assualt that was this season

The only superpass offense that’s left is New England, and they haven’t beaten a team better than .500 all year. They are in for a rude awakening against the Ravens. Three of the four teams left win with defense. That’s all there is to it.

"F***ing shocker." -Billy Wagner

by nymgb44 on Jan 15, 2012 6:59 PM CST reply actions

Doesn't matter

The Ravens front always screws with Brady, and his offensive line is the weakest it’s been in a decade. Rice runs all over the D and Baltimore wins by a score.

By the way...

Giants ranked 28th on D this year, Patriots 31st….in total yards…

And Niners gave up 460 yards in the air….

I’m still looking at the two fumlbes inside our 35 that gave them a short field…

NOt to mention the short field on the onside kick…

Yards are a terrible measure of defense

Also, you can’t measure the Giants based on this season. They had everyone hurt and still won their division. They win with a brutal pass rush and physical coverage.

Giants are primarily pass-based, too

without Eli’s 330 passing yards, the Giants wouldn’t win this game. He was very solid when he needed to be.

Not saying you don't need a good quarterback

It’s just that a passing offense can’t be the staple of your team. The Saints and Packers already learned the hard way. They are mediocre teams disguised by historically great passing offenses. Both will suffer next year…I can easily see Detroit and Carolina winning the North and South, respectively.

Thats not an injury a lot of guys come back from as the same. And our defense was struggling before he left.

Still, he is one of the best safeties in the league. No doubt losing him hurt. Peprah played well filling in at safety last year for Burnett. This year he was horrible.

Burnett is really talented though, and played very well late this year. I’m excited to see how he progresses.

Seen both sides of it now

Sneak into playoffs as 6 seed, get hot win superbowl. Enter as top seed, 15-1… one and done.

I’m not ready to chalk to up to “playing tight due to the one seed, the favorite” and all that. This team was defending champs.

Just simply didn’t execute on offense and make enough plays on defense. But I’m already hungry for next year, and I’m excited to see who we get in the draft and maybe if we nab a free agent or two (gasp).

Great season, was fun to watch this team. Loss stings, but shit we did win it all last year. Most people I know who root for another team have never seen their team play in a superbowl, let alone win one.

Not that it’s an excuse, but the Packers must have had a hell of a week trying to even think straight after what happened last weekend. It’s sad that they even had to play a game so soon after an incident like that.

You better have some guys to sign if you are going to cut all of them

1) Agree, totally

2) Disagree, if he isn’t expensive bring him back. We drafted him, hes shown tremendous skill. Lets see if he can figure it out next year. We could just sign him to a one year deal. Look at how Jordy rewarded us after we resigned him. Breakout year.

3) Yep. We drafted our LT of the future last draft, plus Newhouse should be better next year in case he still isn’t ready.

4) At least he got to win a title as a Packer. We’ll miss DD.

5) Hawk is too expensive for what he provides us. We need a speedier option next to Bishop who can cover RBs and TEs. A Derrick Johnson type (although I know those don’t grow on trees).

Now for the DLinemen, its clear we simply need a difference maker. Raji wore down this year, and he benefited from other lines keying on Jenkins. If we could find a true difference maker at the 3-4 DE spot, it would be a tremendous upgrade for the D. MUST improve the pass rush and be able to generate more without the blitz. This, to me, is priority number one this offseason.

Agreed with all except 5) and maybe Woodson gone too

And, secretly I’m hoping Capers goes too. His lack of adjustments this year was appalling. Pickett will be interesting as he was the best d-lineman, and Hawk is going nowhere. Neal will be back also, but will have to win a spot.

Rushing only the DL and Matthews was NOT a success strategy by any stretch of the imagination. We couldn’t get to Manning consistently, and he picked apart the secondary.

Some of his play calls were horrid

Like that big run before the hail marry, and the hail marry. And I hate how he loves the three man rush. The corners didn’t help him out that much either, but he didn’t help them either.

Pickett also stays, but the Packers need to draft and pass rusher and move, possibly, Matthews to MLB and have him call the plays and make him the captain of the defence.

Meh

I think the fumbles were the real issue. If that was taken care of, something we have been really good at, we make more plays. Rodgers starting pressing out there, and the receivers dropped passes. Rodgers playing would not have helped the receivers catch balls or the running backs hold on to balls either.

True, but if we make those plays
