Trade Rodgers, Keep Flynn, Build Team, Get 5 first round picks

I know many will call this sacreligious, but consider for a second how many first round picks a team would be willing to give up for Aaron Rodgers. I'll bet the Pack could get 5 first round picks or more for him.

We already know Flynn is just as capable at putting up great stats and winning. This is especially true considering the team he is surrounded with. While Rodgers would be hard to part with, I could see it as a true investment in the teams future.

Not to mention how many stories abound about what a jerk or how arrogant Rodgers is to fans, I can't help but wonder if his personality transfers over to the rest of the team and hurts the offensive unit.

Call me crazy, but it is just an idea. Think about it before sending hate replys... Its a gamble but perhaps one that could pay off in spades...

just stupid.
Why would you ever give up Rodgers to go with Flynn? We don’t know Flynn is capable, he hasn’t proving anything. I highly doubt any team would give up 5 first round picks, and those picks would be useless to the Pack if Flynn failed.

All I can say is...

And what stories are you talking about that show Rodgers as arrogant to the fans? I haven’t seen anything like that. In fact, quite the opposite.

Very comical ~ I needed a laugh this morning!

I would agree with you if we were 1 – 15 instead of 15 – 1!! I say, tag Flynn, trade him for a 1st & a 3rd and win the Super Bowl next year!! : )

@ TrevorR

Dude ~ I have no idea what, if anything we’ll get for Matt Flynn!? Whatever the market will bare is my guess. If two teams think he’s their answer for a franchise qb, it’s not out of the realm of possibility…

I would argue that what Flynn put on tape against the Lions is one of best performances in the last decade though. In fact, it’s statistically better than any performance in the Packers history, so if we did tag Flynn, and Miami and Skins get into a bidding war, I believe it could happen.

It’s a qb driven league. No telling what is going to happen, “Hoping for the best, expecting the worst!”

Part of the problem...

There won’t be enough teams bidding. The ones w/ top 5 picks are going to draft a QB and Tannehill is probably a late 1st too. Add that it now looks like P. Manning is going to be released in March and the list of teams that might be interested start to dwindle quickly. And my guess is that they still might have to Franchise Finley. I’m guessing he walks and we hopefully get a 3rd rd compensatory for him. I just don’t see a bidding war materializing.

Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!

Very good point. I think Manning coming into the market makes it too risky to franchise him. It might be a slow market and just too risky.

Look I want to see that as much as anyone but teams just aren’t going to reach THAT much for a guy who’s started in 2 games in his NFL career. I think we’ll be lucky to get a mid-to-low 2nd rounder for him. A first would be insane and a first and a third is just ridiculous, in my opinion. Guys like Kolb and Cassel not lighting it up only hurts his market.

The one thing your plan has going for it is that...

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that there was a GM stupid enough to give up 5 first round picks for one player…

I’m pretty comfortable guessing that every one of those picks would be among the top 3 of the draft every year. …because said GM would be gutting his team’s future and insuring that they were among the worst in the league.

The point being: You’d never find a trade that good. And so the only thing that seeking such a trade would wind up accomplishing would be to piss off Rodgers once he learned that he was being shopped.

If Rodgers continues his current career arc, he’ll be considered one of the best QBs ever to play the game. If you’re lucky enough to get guys like him, you know what you do? As a GM, you count yourself lucky, and you hang to him as long as you can. As a fan, you know what you do? You count yourself lucky and you go buy the frickin’ guy’s jersey. And, whoever you are, you DON’T TALK ABOUT A FRICKIN’ TRADE.

…idiot.

by Curly Lambeau on Jan 23, 2012 5:05 PM CST reply actions

agreed

its really not that crazy, if a team was willing to do the trade and you’re confident in Flynn. I would be confident enough in Flynn for 5 1st rounders for Rodgers.

However no one would make this trade, the most you’re gonna get is 3 1st rounders and if Flynn doesn’t work out… was sacrificing the integrity of your offense worth 3 picks?

I am all for trading your elite players

unless they do something that maybe one or two other players can do. Rodgers has a skill set that probably hasn’t been seen since Young and even then I’d probably still take Rodgers. The same thing goes for Chuck, there might not be a DB who can do what he does.

Players like Matthews, while I love the guy and don’t want him to leave, if someone offered a ton and overpayed for him, I’d probably trade him. He is elite, but you could replace him given the right return. Rodgers and Woodson… you probably can’t replace

Flynn!

It sounds awesome, at least.

I personally don’t like Rodgers, but SB winning quarterbacks coming off of monster seasons aren’t expendable. If Favre is 28-29 when Rodgers is drafted, he’d never have a ring because Favre is tossing the next 4-5 championship games into open arms of defenders while Rodgers hangs onto the clipboard.

Sherrod, Hawk & Harrell are the remaining 3.

Harrell is the only true bust, and you try to find a team that hasn’t had one in the same timeframe. Hawk isn’t great, especially for 5th overall, but he’s no bust. We used our 1st round selection to get Jordy Nelson, so you can’t just discount that one either.

Every GM is going to miss on a guy from time to time. Not sure why people continue to crucify him for having one miss…man, what expectations. Most teams would DIE to have their GM go 5 or 6 (depending on your feelings about Hawk) for 7 in the first round.

5 first rounders for Flynn

You guys don’t think we can get 5 first round picks for Rodgers? I think we could get more. Here’s how it works: We find a trade partner that will give us three first round picks. That can be done. Then we get the Lions, Bears, and Vikings to each throw in their first round picks for the benefit of not facing Rodgers twice a season for the next ten years. Totally worth it for them. And there you have it: we’ve got 6 first round picks! Woohoo! Then we can be like the Eagles and totally win the off season!!! I’ve always wanted to win the off season. The only downside: watching Rodgers win two Super Bowls in the next five years with some other fucking team. Stupid shit is stupid.

The only way I'd do this

THE ONLY WAY
is if you traded Rodgers to Indy for #1, #33, #65, and a few more picks over the next 3 years
then trade away #1 to someone who wants luck for their first 3 picks and a few more picks over the next 3 years
then continue to trade down until we’ve racked up a few extra 2nd and 3rd round picks.

If we traded Luck to Washington, then dropped down to Dallas at 14, then Cincinatti at 21, then New England at 32, you could get either a 2nd or 3rd pick for each of those trades.

Our 2nd round would kill and we could get a lot of help on the dline like
Nick Perry – DE USC
Andre Branch – DE Clemson
Jared Crick – DE Nebraska
Dont’a Hightower, LB Alabama
Josh Chapman – DT Alabama
Several of the CB’s that should be available in the second round.

That would be the only way I’d even consider this.
