NFL needs to fix its playoff system...
Why is it that I don't hear anyone complain about this?
The New York Giants (9-7) are playing in the biggest game in the NFL this week. Don't we want to see the two best teams play eachother (kind of like college football) so there's no controversy as to who the best team really was? Do we honestly think the Giants are a better teams than...
The 15 - 1 Packers
The 13 - 3 Saints
The 13 - 3 49ers
Heck, I don't even think they're as good as the 10 - 6 Lions.
They got hot and lucky, beat three teams in a row, and all of a sudden deserve to play in the NFLs biggest game? I don't think so.
Why do people complain about the BCS system in college football when it so frequently pits the best two teams of that year against each other?
Roger Goodell. Give us a point system so we can see The Green Bay Packers face off against the New England Patriots this year. It would be the better game and both of those squads deserve it.

Huh?
Do you forget what our record and seed was last year? This is a ridiculous post, no one in here can complain about the Giants. Heck we didn’t even win our own division last year and we won it all, why would we want to see that changed?
No I want to see the two teams that EARNED their way to big game. The Giants WASTED us…we don’t deserve to be in the Super Bowl. Either do the other two.

You seem to be forgetting
The 12 or 13 games leading up to the last 3 or 4. Those games count too, you know.
Happy Virginian, Sconnie for life.
So it’s a 3 and 4 game season?
No…it’s a 16 game season. You know, the Giants did have to win other games to make it to the playoffs.
Every game is meaningful. Most of the time you’ve gotta win at least 9 games to make it to the playoffs, and when you factor in that any team can be another team any given Sunday (Packers losing to under 500. Chiefs, 49ers losing to the Cardinals, Saints losing to Bucs, Rams), that doesn’t leave any room non-meaningful games.
If we were to do that then we’d have two heavily scrutinized, and flawed football leagues. People would always be complaining about schedules or the fact that certain teams may have improved more than other teams throughout the season. Why would we want any of that?
The playoffs are the fairest way to determine a winner, and only allowing 6 teams from each conference ensures that each team that makes the playoffs had to play well throughout the season.

What you are describing sounds AWFUL. No drama. Teams that are in the middle have no chance at anything. More teams stop trying and start vying for draft pick spots. Your system would eliminate teams about 5 weeks into the season causing a terrible competitive mix in the NFL.
The college (kinda) works because teams are competing for players on a completely open market while in the NFL much of the players come via draft. There is a benefit for them for sucking so if a team around week 5 finds that they are already in essence eliminated there is no real motivation to give their all (other than pride).
Its a 20 game season which far trumps a boring, anti-climactic 17 game season that you are describing. My gosh, I can’t even believe that there is one person that would want to see such an awful system brought anywhere.

by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 3, 2012 11:10 PM CST up reply actions
It’s your opinion and I don’t want to bash it but how can you prefer college football to NFL football?
I can understand how somebody could prefer college basketball to NBA basketball. The NBA has consistently done things that take away from the game. The shorter shot clocks — people want to see higher scoring games. The defensive 3 seconds in the key — people want to see more dunks. While that rule also helps to limit helps limit helpside defense — again, people want to see more scoring. The fact that any “superstar” gets a foul called for him anytime he drives and is bumped/touched in the slightest. Not too mention, the seasons are too long, which leads to teams playing half assed defense for parts of the regular season.
All those things, for me personally, negate the fact that the NBA has the far superior talent.
But I don’t feel as though the NFL has done those sort of things to the game of football. And while I do like college football, it doesn’t even come close to the NFL for me. The talent is superior, as is the coaching — the spread offenses can be exciting to watch but I guess at times it comes off a “gimmicky” to me.
But I don’t understand

Real quick...
1) I love the fact that I’m watching student athletes who are going on to succeed in parts of life not related to football. Notre Dame is my team and even that program only produces a handful of NFL players each year. I can’t stand the average NFL athlete in today’s game.
2) The atmosphere in the college game is ten times better than that found in the NFL. Entire towns get behind college football programs. It’s beautiful.
3) There’s a wider variety of philosophies in the college game. The NFL game is far more homogenized.
4) The college game is simply more wide open. Monster running backs can average 7 yards a carry. Teams can routinely throw for 500+ yards. College superstars have a much bigger impact on the game than do NFL superstars.

Notre Dame has been a power house every year for the past 50 years. It makes sense to take time out of your life and watch your home team compete on a high level.
What is wrong with the people in Green Bay? The Packers have gone through more than a few rough patches during that time and people still feel the need to go out in the cold and watch their teams face get kicked in? How about spending time with your family? How about putting in a few more hours at work? How about saving up so your son or daughter can go to a better school? Something is seriously wrong there.

I've been to Notre Dame several times, I'm an Irish fan as well.
touring the campus is a surreal experience. And I can’t deny that the whole crowd gathering as the players and coaches go from mass to the stadium is pretty cool as well.
But I wouldn’t say the game atmosphere is better than that of an NFL game, particularly a small town type of NFL game (like Buffalo, where I have season tickets). It’s just a different atmosphere. less alcohol in the college atmosphere. But it’s also pretty uncomfortable sitting in those bleachers at Notre Dame stadium where they pack people in like sardines.

I imagine that's why Patriots fans take over your home stadium every year.

1) I love the fact that I’m watching student athletes who are going on to succeed in parts of life not related to football. Notre Dame is my team and even that program only produces a handful of NFL players each year. I can’t stand the average NFL athlete in today’s game.
But you can stand the average NBA player? A league with players who came straight out of high school and guys who left after one season?
I love the atmosphere in the college game too but there are plenty of cities in the NFL who fully get behind their teams. I went to my first Packer game this past season actually, and the experience was amazing. It seemed as though the entire city was doing something for the game. Whether it was them actually being at the game, or every neighborhood seemingly having get togethers.
The reason the NFL is more homogenized is because all that college gimmick stuff does not work when you’re playing among all the best players.
As for 4), that’s true to a degree. Though, I’d argue that plenty of NFL superstars have just as big an impact on the game as college superstars. Only, their impact is more impressive because they’re doing it against the world’s best.

It sounds like, in essence,
you just like college football better than pro football.
Stick with that, then. The things you like about college football; better atmosphere at the game, wider variety in philosophies, college superstars having more of an impact on the game than NFL superstars, have nothing to do with what you propose.
The implementation of your idea in the NFL would do nothing to improve the things you think the NFL lags behind the college game in.
I’m still reading this post, but I’m waiting to read WHY you think your idea is a good one because the short, incomplete reason you give in the post is grossly inadequate. It doesn’t even make a very open minded person like myself pause for more than a few seconds to think about it.
If you can provide good reasons, detailed reasons, I will listen.

Yeah and the NFL has the same regular season drama. The BCS is complete anticlimactic. You build all season for what, announcing a game that we all could have guessed because its based on the same ranking system that they announce for over half the season. The only time there is real drama is if one of the top two loses their last game. Yawn

This is debatable. Though, I know I personally almost always take issue with the other BCS games more so than the championship.

I agree totally...
Other games in the BCS are iffy at best. However, the championship game is hardly ever iffy. The BCS so consistently pulls the two best teams in the nation to go against eachother. Sometimes there is a 3rd undefeated team that played an easier schedule but at the end of the day you ALWAYS have your one and two teams.
The NFL’s record in deciding the best team has such a spotty record.

This is not possible, IMO. It’s decided on the field. The NFL actually has no record in the decision, the teams battle and decide it on the scoreboard.

The current NFL playoff system is perfect by example of its immense popularity across America. The NFL playoff system shouldn’t be changed. What?
What is this?
The NFL is popular because of its playoff system? I didn’t know Justin Beiber, Nickelback, and the Black Eyes Peas have a playoff system as well. Oh wait, they don’t. They’re popular because most Americans don’t demand anything better.

Its popular because its been worked on and improved on over many decades. Its better because its FAR FAAAAR superior to some committee grabbing two teams that they think are best. The BCS system is anticlimactic and boring.

We prefer teams that prove themselved during the regular season to earn a playoff spot, and then play well for weeks on end to earn a SB berth!
There is no luck in the giants this year and the Packers last year winning enough game to get into the playoffs and then go on to play their best ball of the season to win a SB.
I supported the LSU/Alabama game, but hell Alabama didn’t even win their division of their conference. What did they do to earn the right to play in the BCS Champ game?

Playoffs
is when you gotta play your best football. We didn’t, so we’re out. They did, so that’s why they’re still in. Comparing the NFL to the B©S is absurd. The notion of a ‘best’ team as defined by any one game is nebulous as on any given day any ‘good’ NFL team can lose to another ‘bad’ one (SEE: NE vs. Buf, Bal vs Jax, NYG vs. StL, GB vs. KC, etc.). It’s about sustained success, in the games where it counts.
Remember:
At the end of the day the NFL playoffs are about crowning the NFL champion.

There is too much luck involved in the NFL to decide everything on one game...
Offenses frequently only have 10 possessions per game. There are always a handful of fluky plays that decide the fate of any one game. I’d rather focus on how a team does for an entire season rather that one play, series, half, or game.
This is especially true considering the NFL only plays 16 regular season games.
My way, you would get the best football teams playing each other all the time.
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Jan 31, 2012 11:44 AM CST up reply actions
Name me some games in the playoffs that were only decided by one flukey play. There is so much that goes into a game that one play can NEVER be the reason for a team not making it. Poor play for a whole game can make a better team lose to a worse one though.

Neither system is "better." Both are appropriate for their own situation
It’s good that the college system rewards achievement over the whole season, since it’s about amateur (in a good sense) competition. They’re kids who are there (this is the idea anyway) to learn life lessons. (This, btw, is the ONLY excuse to connect sports to what are supposed to be institutions of higher learning.)
But, in the NFL, it’s about who can perform when the pressure’s on. The Packers didn’t do that this year. To say that we deserved to lose misses the point. We DID lose. It doesn’t matter how or why. …nor should it matter. Professionals don’t (and shouldn’t) get points for effort or talent.
So…
In college, how you play the game is important, and how good you are (i.e. how well a particular team has exemplified success in their total performance) matters. In the pros, however, all that matters is what the scoreboard says when the clock gets to double zeros. Players and teams either got the job done or they didn’t. Nothing else is important.
And we can see that both systems are right in that they give the correct results. When college teams lose, then it’s time to talk about what happened, and who can say what it all means. But when pro teams lose, they just go home to deal with an empty, barren sense of loss and the label of “failure.”
Except
The two teams that should make the BCS Championship are ALWAYS debatable. Thus being why the BCS system is fraud. Some teams simply never had a chance. This is exactly why the playoff is required.
One game at a time...
Tell me the last "debatable" Championship matchup...

You have GOT to be joking now. 2011 is the first year there really wasn’t a debate. See now you just destroyed any credibility you had with this group.
The NFL never produces such a matchup? The NFL consistantly produces better matchups of teams that are playing their best football at the time of the game…that is why the championship game is competitive with great, hot teams playing each other.

Dude your Buffalo argument falls apart. You are trying to take a single stretch of games and imply that team being hot during a stretch shouldn’t matter. But its a poor argument. It falls apart because you have to be a very good or better team just to get to the point where it matters if your team is hot. You just ignore this point over and over because it completely debunks your point.

Post Season
If anything you’re going to go back in time and pick out some undefeated team that played a cake schedule.
I’m not a Boise State fan, nor do I even think they were the best team a few years ago. HOWEVER, I still cannot prove that they weren’t the best team. They did go undefeated, they did beat Oklahoma in a BCS Bowl Game, and they did prove that the system is fraud. Yeah, they had a cupcake schedule, but it goes to prove that if some team has a slightly easier schedule than others, then they have NO CHANCE of reaching the Super Bowl. So why play the game??? That’s why there’s a playoff. We find the TRUE champion. Not only that, but we get to watch an exciting game between two hot teams. It’s called the Post Season for a reason. Post means after, in case you didn’t know. So what happened in the Regular Season is irrelevant at this point. You play to win in the Regular Season to get yourself in the best situation in the Post Season. You simply proved why every single person other than yourself in this fanpost is correct by mentioning the words “undefeated team” and relating it to not making the Championship Game. The Championship should not be played by teams that in my opinion are the best teams, because everyone has a different opinion. That’s exactly why a playoff is necessary.

See, I would say “so what?” if the champion is debatable. In college, it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. And if that gets college football fans frustrated, well… My response would be “Maybe y’all should take a pill and remember that it’s a game.”
It’s like how… In Indiana, they stopped having just one highschool state basketball champion. (…meaning that “Hoosiers” could never happen today). And one of the reasons they did that was to take the pressure off the kids. It was just too much. Losing a championship game was just crushing the kids. …like, for life. You know, in a rare moment of clarity (rare when it comes to sports in our country), everybody stepped back and said to themselves “Y’know, this is high school basketball we’re talking about here. Let’s dial it back a notch.”
Similarly, when it comes to college sports, the whole thing started out as sports clubs organized by students for playing games in their spare time. Then they started playing other colleges. Then the alumni started caring about who won the games. yadda yadda yadda Now we’ve got 100,000 people in attendence with millions more watching around the world. It’s a multi-billion dollar a year industry. …and, y’know… Fuckin’ A. They’re just kids. They’re 19 year-old kids. They don’t get paid. They’re supposed to be in college. If it’s a good experience for them, if they get a scholarship, if people like watching it… Then that’s all great. But let’s not put the fate of the world on their shoulders. Who cares about definitively crowning “the best”?
….the answer, unfortunately, is “a lot of people.” But, in my opinion, everyone just needs to take a deep breath and Let. It. Go.

This whole thread is dumb.
It’s like saying the Pro-Bowl is actually relevant. The Seahawks beat the Saints last year, and they had a losing record. If the Saints were better than there is no reason they should have lost. They came out flat and lost. If you get into the play-offs and can win than you deserve to be there, simple as that.
How does someone like you actually exist?
I don’t mean to come off as flippant but your brain actually connected the BCS system to the Pro Bowl. How do you know when to eat? This baffles me. If you’re going to make an argument try and stay in this galaxy.
If the Saints were better they would prove their superiority over a long period of time. A game in which your offense has 10 possessions and a couple a fluke games is not long enough to decide a better team.
Case in point, Miracle on Ice. If Russia got to play us 10 more times they would have won 10 more times. They were clearly the better team.

“It’s like saying the Pro-Bowl is actually relevant.”
That’s all he wrote. I’m sure you know just as much about what he meant as I did. We both had the same information to go off of. However, that quote above is simply wrong. Challenging accepted notions about what best decides a champion is nothing like saying the Pro Bowl is relevant. It’s not like that at all.
What this really comes down to is this…I came here to stir the pot with regards to what fans blindly accept. I could be right. I could be wrong. I think I have proven that it’s worth thinking about though.
Many of you accept the fact that the NBA decides it’s champion in a 7 game series. You’ve accepted the group run of the PGA Tour. You’ve accepted the bracket structure of the four majors in tennis. Accepting things just because you’re a fan doesn’t make you right. It makes you sheep.

I think that is a major flaw in what you are trotting out as rational thought.
The Giants did not get lucky to be where they are. Instead, I would argue that they got unlucky during the regular season to end up with a record that makes them look worse than they really are. They are probably the most balanced team in the league in terms of the talent and performance on both sides of the ball. They are not the best at anything in particular, but they are good to very good across the board. Teams don’t luck into beating three quality teams on the road. Every win might not be decisive, but when a team runs the gauntlet of three playoff road wins, I think in every case you can conclude that they earned it.
All the teams you listed as being possibly better than the Giants have significant flaws. Those flaws got exposed in the playoffs. I have no problem concluding that the two best teams in the NFL are about the play for the championship. May the best team win — and it just might be the Giants.
...
So the Giants were lucky for 16 games and the real team showed themselves for 4 games?
Sorry. Not buying it.
Those teams weren’t “exposed” in the playoffs. They played tough games that came down to one or two pivitol/lucky plays.

by a 9 – 7 football team with the 27th ranked defense. You honestly believe that a defense with that kind of talent can just “turn it on” against the Packers? What kind of fantasy world to you live in? There are so many variables in a single NFL play. The Giants got lucky. That’s it.
So week 13 was a “fluke” and the playoffs was a true test of team? Pick one people!

The Giants were also battling injuries all season, much like the Packers did last season. So because that team had an unfortunate adversity to overcome, they shouldn’t be allowed to contend for the Championship? They got healthy and hot at the right time. They played and won the game fair and square. You cannot make a case for the Packers to be in the Super Bowl when they failed to beat Giants in the playoffs. The playoffs are all ABOUT the best teams in the conference PROVING they belong in the Championship Game. Yeah, we had a better Regular Season than the Giants. So what? The NFL and most other sports are all about what happens in the Regular Season AND Post Season.

This is just it...
You have accepted what the NFL has sold you all these years.
The NFL says that the playoffs are THE place where only the truly competitive survive. It’s this mentality that sells tickets rather than decides a true champion.
If you want to “prove” you belong in the Championship Game then do it all year. Don’t be a meddling team who squeeks into the playoffs and gets lucky for a few weeks.
There are teams who go 10 – 6 and don’t make it to the playoffs. The Giants go one game above .500 in a 16 game season and you automatically think they’re the best? lol
The giants won 3 straight games in the playoffs. Considering the level of intensity is exactly the same during the regular season I’d say “lucky” is exactly what they are.
I know I’m not going to change your opinion because your sheep who have been indoctrinated over the course of your adolescent life. However, someone will read this thread and think twice about what is presented to them. It just wont be you.

If you want to "prove" you belong in the Championship Game then do it all year. Don’t be a meddling team who squeeks into the playoffs and gets lucky for a few weeks.
You repeatedly are failing to grasp the fact that a team almost always has to have at least 9 wins to make the playoffs. You keep saying a team can just get lucky for a few weeks and make it but that’s totally false. The Giants had to have gotten lucky 6 other weeks too.
However, someone will read this thread and think twice about what is presented to them. It just wont be you.
How many people have been in agreement with you in this thread? You call of us sheep and imply that we just agree with whatever is presented too us. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe the reason the majority of people DO accept the NFL’s playoff system is because, oh I don’t know, it makes sense!?
Why would anybody think twice about your “idea”? One football system already uses it. This isn’t some new, thought inspiring idea that no one has ever thought of before.
It’s pretty much the exact opposite, and is one that has been heavily scrutinized for years now! So much so that our freakin’ president has mentioned its flawed approach! And one that appears to be hopefully coming to an end soon, and rightfully so.

Sigh...
You just brought up a series of topics I have already addressed. I suggest you read some of the thread before tying to add your two sense. If the Giants beat the Patriots this Sunday, this is what you’ll have…
The Green Bay Packers won 15 max intensity NFL games this year.
The New England Patriots won 15 max intensity NFL games this year.
The San Francisco 49ers won 14 max intesity NFL games this year.
The NEW YORK GIANTS will have won 13 max intesity NFL games this year.
The NFL (and the BCS actually) is so great because there is no difference between regular season and postseason. Players play as if each game matter because, each game matters.
I think the main goal of crowning a champion is having the most deserving team actually wear it. Looking at the above list, I don’t think there’s a sane person on the planet who actually thinks the Giants are the most deserving champion.
I also raise question to your idea that because the majority of people accept it, it must be right. Look at what the masses watch on TV (Two and a Half Men). Look at what the masses read (David Patterson). Look at what the masses listen to (Nickelback). I know this is going to sound arrogant but, the masses are dumb. They aren’t concerned with the truest way to do things. They are concerned with appeasing their mind. The NFL playoffs, as they currently are, are simply a way for dumb people to watch two teams play football for 12 minutes, yes that’s right, 12 minutes, determine a winner and loser and move on.
As years move on, people who think on a slightly more advanced level will recognize the Packers as the best team during the 2011/2012 years. Dumb people will remember who won Super Bowl.
Super.

Hell yeah the Giants deserve it. They took on three of best 6 teams in the NFC, head to head, and beat them. That IS the NFL. Who can come into a game, create the best strategy and execute it better than everyone else.
The thing you miss is that the teams in the BCS play shit teams for like half of their games to stack their record and make them look special. In fact outside of like 3-4 games the great teams in the NCAA aren’t even challenged so I don’t know about this whole max intensity BS you are spewing but I don’t see max intensity happening in your BCS despite all the nonsense you are talking about.
The fact that you somehow think you are some superior thinker due to the fact that you think a broken, worthless system of pitting two teams that some computer deems best is beyond me. There is no sense or logic that will ever allow it to make sense because it doesn’t exist. Everyone I talk to hates the BCS system….maybe its time for you to figure out that maybe its YOUR system that is bad.

This is from a Lions fan
What your saying has a few huge flaws. Let me break them down.
“If you want to "prove" you belong in the Championship Game then do it all year. Don’t be a meddling team who squeeks into the playoffs and gets lucky for a few weeks.”
First there is no such thing as a meddling team squeaking into the playoffs if your there you deserve to be there, because you earned it in the regular season. Second hitting is the ultimate equalizer you don’t get lucky you capitalize on your opponents mistakes.
“There are teams who go 10 – 6 and don’t make it to the playoffs. The Giants go one game above .500 in a 16 game season and you automatically think they’re the best? lol”
Lol is right because no one said they were the best because they got in they are the best because they beat three playoff teams on the road. Second your system would allow teams like the falcons last year to be in the super bowl. They (just like the bucs) fattened their record against very weak teams and the NFC West. They were exposed in the playoffs and proved they didn’t belong in the biggest game.
“The giants won 3 straight games in the playoffs. Considering the level of intensity is exactly the same during the regular season I’d say "lucky" is exactly what they are.”
How can you possibly say that the level of intensity is no different in the playoffs? Ask any player who has ever played the game and they will tell you that it is on a whole other level. The intensity has no choice but to go up because now its elimination football instead of looking forward to next weeks game. So for the Giants to win three games in that intensity they deserve to be int he super bowl.

nothing needs to be changed in the nfl playoffs besides the refereeing, which wouldn’t have helped us play better this year. accept it we played like the french in world war 2… caught with our pants around our asses, completely flat footed. you want to get the packers in the playoffs, teach them how to hold onto the damn ball, tackle the QB and play better against wr’s.
Need I disprove everyone's comments?
According to the current NFL system, team B can beat team A by a last second field goal and win by 1 point. The next week, team C can beat team A by 43 points and play their reserves for the fourth quarter. According to the NFL both team B and team C should receive equal recognition for the two games.

That said, in the NFL system he’s got a shot, he’ll probably play R4F in the first game and if he can beat him, I think he’s got a shot.

I’m looking for someone to “make the jump” and it seems like no one has that ability.
Personally, I love the NBA. It’s by far my favorite sport to watch. Now I understand when an “outsider” comes in to start bashing it, my initial reaction is to defend it at all costs. Actually, wait, my initial reaction was to defend it at all costs. However, once I turned 14 I realized that this is what fools do. It’s far better to listen to the outsiders ludicrous comments, seperate your ego from the claims and see if there is any truth to what he/she is saying. I’ll clue you in…There often is.
What I’m trying to get at is that no sport is perfect.
Why is the 16 game schedule the perfect amount of games to determine playoff seeding? Can you imaging the NBA, NHL, and MLB starting its postseason after 16 regular season games?
Why is the 4 week postseason the perfect amound of playoff games?
Why is 12 minutes of play sufficient enough to determine a winner?
You see. You need to ask better questions if you want a better product. Many of you are complacent with this aspect of your life. I wonder how complacent you are with other aspects? Just a thought.

The NBA is your favorite league?
16 team make the NBA playoffs. There are only 30 teams in the entire league. That means more than half, and possibly several sub-.500 teams have a chance to win the championship. Go write a post on Brew Hoop or something about how stupid that is, because then you’d at least come close to having a point.
Also, I’m not sure you know how much time there is in a football game. At this point I’m just curious. How the hell did you come up with 12 minutes? You’ve said that twice now, and looked extraordinarily idiotic both times.
2011: A wasted year
Have you ever heard of the search engine called GOOGLE?
It’s common knowledge that there is between 11 – 14 minutes of actual “play” in an NFL game. Most of what you actually watch is people standing around and replays.
Also, try rereading my post. I was the first to admit that the NBA has plenty of problems.
However, it’s fascinating that you highlight the inclusion of 16 teams into it’s playoffs. What does this have to do with getting in the way of finding a true champion? Have you even done the research? Do you know how often seven and eight seeds even make it to the finals? Go GOOGLE it.
Upsets are far less common in the NBA due to the fact that teams get so many possessions during a typical NBA playoff series. The better team almost always goes on.
Also, who can blame the NBA for getting 16 NBA cities involved in the postseason? The 1 vs 8 matchup rarely ends up in a long series or upset and you get that many more people watching basketball.
If you’re going to try and provide a retort try using your head a little bit.
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 2, 2012 12:36 PM CST up reply actions
But dude, don't you get it.
You’re feeding the corporate machine. They have all those extra playoff games that just feed advertising profits, and they know that all of you sheep will just tune in because it’s on. Besides, the fact that the Bobcats could win the championship after winning, like, 80 fewer games than the Bulls just proves the problem. It’s even about whether or not it would happen, it could happen. Then we’d have a champion who, even though they won all the way through the playoffs, and proved themselves to be the best of the 16 teams that got in, we’d have a champion that didn’t deserve it.
What they should do is have an 80 game preseason, just to make sure everyone is playing at their best, then just have 1 regular season game a piece, all against the Washington Generals, and the two teams that have the largest margin of victory would go to a championship game after getting a month off. The once they’re nice and cold again, to make sure there is no competitive advantage, we have have each player on each team shoot 1 free throw each. Whichever team makes more free throws wins the championship. Problem solved.

This isn’t rocket science my friend. You can’t compare the NFL to the MLB, NBA, or NHL. None of those sports are nearly as physically demanding as football is. Nearly every play, close to every play is in a collision aside from the QB. If the NFL played 82 games in the regular season, let alone 40, probably over half of the team they started the season with would be hurt. And at that point, it would basically come down to which team could overcome the injury bug the best. I’m sure someone as concerned about finding the “real” best team wouldn’t want it to come down to that, would you?
The time alloted for the playoffs obviously corresponds with the number of teams who make it : 12. That’s 37.5% of the teams in the NFL who make it. In comparison, 53% of the teams make the playoffs in the NHL, 53% make it in the NBA, and 26% make it in the MLB. Just humor me here for a second — do you bitch and moan about the NBA’s champion? Because they almost always allow one or two teams who are either right under or above 500. into the playoffs.

I want to try putting this into terms I can understand, or Fun with Analogy!
So, okay. The Olympics are coming up, and I always enjoy watching them – particularly the track and swimming. If what I’m understanding from this philosophy (i.e., post-season games shouldn’t count for determining a champion, as they are redundant; instead, an overall quantifier should be used) is correct, then I’ll have to dispute every single gold medal result. Why should only the finals of the 200m count? Clearly, we should sum the times from all qualifying rounds, and whoever has the lowest total time wins the gold, right? And imagine if Usain Bolt DQs in the second heat (say, a false start). Well, he’s unquestionably the fastest man in the world, so he belongs in the final anyhow – despite his not getting there.
I’m sorry, but I don’t buy this scenario in track (or swimming, for that matter), and I don’t buy it in football.
The idea that “to be the best, you have to beat the best” is not a new phenomenon, nor is it confined to the wide world of sports. Greek warriors didn’t earn κλέος by beating up a series of six-year-olds with slings, they defeated trained professional armies single-handedly. They would, however, still have to be able to beat the six-year-olds. Even when faced with inferior opponents, the best, the most honorable, the strongest – whatever you want to call the supposed champion – still has to win. Otherwise, they aren’t the best. It really is that simple. Has this universal truth allowed a perfect NFL playoff system? I don’t know, but I think it’s as close as we’re going to get.
If you’re going to consider me brainwashed, I’ll thank you not to attribute that to current televised media. Instead, I suggest you find the nearest Sumerian and punch him in the face.
(For the record, I do not consider any NFL opponent to be a bunch of six-year-olds with slings. Except the Bears.)

What you failed to address in you commendable post is that every sport is different.
My BCS point system works more effectively in a football setting. Essentially, the regular season is the playoffs, and you consistently get to watch the two best teams play each other for the title. I’m not so sure it makes a smooth transition to individual sports like track and field.
Let me try to work something out here…
If Usain Bolt runs a 9.497 in the 100 meter during the semi finals (which would shatter his world record) and runs a 9.783 in the 100 meter in the finals, which earns him a bronze, what should he be recognized for?
If someone asks me “Who is the greatest 100m runner of all time”, I’m going to reference Usain Bolt and his 9.497 time rather than whoever earned gold during the final. I think his athletic accomplishment was far more important than what people ran in the finals.
I think the greater achievement isn’t the gold medal but rather the world record. Is that too crazy to suggest? Is it as satisfying? Of course not. Is it more accurate? Without question.
People seem happy to place a synthetic value on a particular match. I’m not down with that.
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 2, 2012 1:20 PM CST up reply actions
Actually, the place where the Olympic analogy limps is that it is really nothing other than one big playoff. The “regular season” in that analogy would be whatever an athlete has to do to qualify for the get into the Olypics in the first place. So, really, a BCS type-system in an Olympic context would mean not racing everybody else at all. Instead, you’d average the times that people ran in the World Championships (or whatever their sport has) and then Usain Bolt would only race against one other person for the gold. …and whoever was deemed to be #s 3 and 4 would race each other for the bronze, and everybody would compete in a Rose Bowl race or something just to sell commercial time.
Also, another limp in the analogy is that running and swimming have very simple, objectively quantifiable numbers which determine who’s better. You wouldn’t need a spazzy BCS computer to tell you who the best two are. It would be an objective fact. …which still doesn’t change the fact that somebody can win the world championship and still get upset in the Olympics, which is where the Olympics are superior to the BCS.

Picking the 2 "best" teams in the NFL would be highly subjective and cause loss of popularity in the sport
1) How do you really know which team is the best? Do we really want “experts” like Peter King and Chris Collinsworth voting on which teams get to go to the SuperBowl? What about strength of schedule? or do we just add up wins and go with that, regardless of the schedule. In this scenario to do we ditch divisions, leagues, etc?
2) Having a single game playoff where the two “best” teams make it will kill the popularity of the sport. As it is, teams that struggle for 5-8 years at a time suffer loss of fans, add to the fact now that only 2 teams each year would go to the championship, as there are no playoff games… and there is nothing for the “good” teams fans to root for. Most people think of the NFL as two seasons… the quest to get to the playoffs – a season where any year about 25 of the 30 teams have a legitimate shot, and the Playoffs, where you have to go through the gauntlet of the NFLs toughest teams.
And believe it or not, fans LOVE the Cinderella story. The Giants run in 07 was magical, as was the Packs run last year and the Giants run so far this year. Why would you deprive people of that chance. And on the other hand, the fact that these magical runs happen every so often makes the top seed winning the superbowl more impressive… but it shows that its not so easy. The leagues parity is the main thing the NFL is selling.
ps… livestrong – what are some of ur favorite bands/artists…. just curious since you brought that up a few times. Seems like you don’t like nickleback or creed.

It takes coaches and journalists polls to “determine” who the top teams are. You don’t get that in the NFL. The Pro Bowl and player awards are the only things in the NFL determined by it.
In college, your top 5 are predetermined before the season even starts and it doesn’t matter for most of them if they lose, they’re still considered “top contenders”. I’d rather see a playoff system in the NCAAF to really see the top teams. Maybe then I’d watch it more.

i get it… the current system isnt necessarily a system to find the “best overall team”… but I just don’t think thats the goal. Obviously the goal is to maximize profit.
also, I don’t think any of the major sports I know of do a great job at isolating the “best overall team” at the end. I’m a huge baseball fan, but I know that the playoffs in baseball area crapshoot that largely favor teams with 2-3 great pitchers (rather than a full staff).
I totally get the urge to improve finding the best team… but there are limitations of the sport, and in football its game-sample size due to the physicality and injury issue. Its unfortunate in some ways, but I really do think America enjoys the idea that any team can win any game.

Would it really cause a loss of popularity?
The college football season gets fired out of a cannon before a single snap, when the official top 25 standings are released. Not only that but each week there is a massive amount of focus on rankings one through twenty five because of this list nature. Doesn’t the rise of popularity in power rankings over the past 10 years prove that people love this structure? It’s a perfect discussion throughout the entire regular season.
1) How do we know which team is best? Do it like they do in college. When a massive program (good team) beats a low level program (bad) team, you don’t earn many points. Wide margin victories give you more points than low margin victories. Upsets nets you massive points. Like I’ve said many times before, no system is perfect, not even this one, but it’s the closest we got.
2) You would have to restructure some things. Perhaps create 20 regular season games, 4 “lower level bowl games” and 1 “bcs style championship”. In the current system, teams that suck for 5 – 8 years already lose fans. Nothing would change. Bad teams would still get high draft picks that could be used to reinvigorate your fanbase and help rebuild your franchise.
You nailed it on the head with your third paragraph. Fans love the current system. I’m not interested in what fans love. I’m interested in finding out what two teams are the best and having them go at it in the last game. Let’s not kid ourselves. If the NFL did switch to a BCS type system, it’s popularity would stay on it’s current path. Can you imagine how much attention it would draw? Rating would be out of this world.
What bands do I like? I’m headed to a Springsteen concert in March (can’t wait!). The music in my IPOD always changes but some of my all time favorites? The Smashing Pumpkins, The Streets, The National, TV on the Radio, Portishead… My tastes range from the popular to the pretentious.
by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 2, 2012 2:48 PM CST up reply actions
Fans love the elimination game
I’m not so sure that changing the NFL to the BCS system would cause an increase in ratings… but I can’t prove it would do the opposite either. The fans did stick around during the lockout.
Its a matter of whether you cherish the elimination games at the end of the season – the Giants have played 5 of them, with the 6th coming soon. As a Giants fan this has been one of the most memorable sports seasons I can remember. Its right up there with the 07 run and the Yankees ’96 season.
In some respects, the BCS system would make the regular season games slightly more important… but its not the same as that end of the season do or die phenomenon the current system has. Whenever you’re talking about changing the system you have to think about whether or not the new one is more enjoyable for the fans (i dont think the bcs one would be) and if its more profitable for the league/owners.
One more point… I think later games are more important than earlier games. I just feel that way. The end of the season SHOULD be more important. You could argue weighing the later games in ur BCS voting/points/etc… Either way I really do feel that the Giants EARNED their spot in the SB by beating the top 2 seeds in back to back weeks.
I’m interested in finding out what two teams are the best and having them go at it in the last game.
That is the problem. Record doesn’t always tell you who the best team is. It tells you who won the most but that could be as much a factor schedule, injuries, timing, etc more than anything. How would you explain the 18-0 Patriots losing the Giants a few years ago. Maybe they really weren’t the best team afterall??

by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 2, 2012 2:53 PM CST up reply actions
careful with "27th ranked defense"
that partially comes from things like playing all of the most explosive offenses throughout the season (cowboys, eagles, patriots, packers, saints)…. also, using volume stats is a little bit outdated.
Just to show 1 potential flaw/pitfal of the system you’re describing, here is an example from this year. Advancednflstats.com uses only predictive stats (yards per attempt, success rate, etc) to rank the teams. The top ranked team at the end of the year was the Texans. Now we know going into the playoffs they were doomed because they were on their 3rd string QB… but if we went by those rankings the championship game would be a mess… but that system values all 16 games of the regular season evenly.
(note: i’m not going to go through why i like the advancednflstats.com rankings better than ANY power ranking out there in detail, but basically its unbiased by using only the facts. All the deductions for future performance prediction are based on stats that have proven over the last 10 years to be indicative of future performance… and his game win probabilities almost always predict game outcomes higher than 90-95% of the “experts” and vegas, and that is without the knowledge of injuries)
i believe Advanced nfl stats had the giants defense as the 18th best, and their offesnse as the 4th…
one more comment i forgot to make – you tend to believe the current playoff system is largely influenced by luck. well the advanced stats job is to throw out any “luck” factor. thats basically the difference between their rankings and the typical power rankings. They throw out unpredictable things like fumbles recovered, punt return TDs, etc etc.
Keep in mind… if a team can be “lucky” enough to win 3-4 games at the end of the season, they can do that in hte beginning or middle too….
Uh the NBA stinks dude
Idk how anyone could compare it to Football

by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 2, 2012 9:42 PM CST up reply actions
You asked me to do some research earlier, so here it is. No TLDR, refute me.
Just about every one of those had a 3rd, and in some cases 4th team that had just as much argument for being in the game. Example: In 2008, two undefeated teams, Utah and Boise State were both undefeated going into bowl Selection. Both were passed up in favor of the 12-1 Florida Gators and the 12-1 Oklahoma Sooners. 2 undefeated teams got passed over for two record-wise inferior teams because of you beloved computer. Both Utah and Boise State absolutely dominated their entire schedules, and had had both earned the right to play for the championship.
Then-ranked #3 Utah went on to pound #4 Alabama 31-17 to win the Sugar Bowl, a wider margin than Florida had managed in the SEC championship(31-20). And speaking of Florida, their 1 loss of that season came the 2-2 Ole Miss Rebels, who would finish the year 9-4( 4th in the SEC, unranked going into Bowl Selection). According to your arguments, that alone should have eliminated Florida from title contention, and yet they went on to be National Champs, beating an Oklahoma team that had 1 loss, to the 5-0 Texas, who entered Bowl Selection ranked #4, with their only loss to then undefeated #7 Texas Tech, who beat #25 Ole Miss 47-34 in the Cotton Bowl to finish the year 11-2, #12. For the record, Texas ended up at 12-1, #4, with a victory over 10-2 #10 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, 24-21.
Boise State on the other hand entered Bowl Selection undefeated at 12-0, ranked #9, and would go on to lose to then 10-2 #11 TCU, 17-16, in the Poinsettia Bowl. For the record, 1 of TCU’s 2 losses that year came to Utah, who dealt them their second loss of the year, 13-10. The other loss that year? Oklahoma.
SINCE I’M SURE YOU’VE SKIPPED THIS FAR ANYWAYS, what all of this adds up to is the fact the only team to go the entire 2008 season without losing a game was the 13-0 #2 Utah Utes, who were excluded from the title game because a computer rated their perfect season as inferior to the flawed seasons of other teams. The second thing that you can take from the 2008 college football season is that there couldn’t possibly be a stronger argument for the existence of a playoff bracket in the Bowl system that the results from that season. The National Title Game is most certainly debatable, as far as crowning a true champion goes.

I can't believe this...
You’re using the “soccer mom” argument. “Well my boys won every game they played so it doesn’t seem fair that they don’t get to play in the big game!”
Hey soccer mom, your boys loaded their schedule with Sisters of the Weak, Little Sisters of the Poor, and the Kennedy School of Autism. Do you have any idea what type of schedule the Florida Gators and Oklahoma Sooners fight through every year? Both teams consistently play top 25 schedules.
I want to thank you for highlighting this entire argument AGAIN. The BCS is such a brilliant system because it attempts to use some intelligence in deciding its champions. The BCS system TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE TYPE OF SCHEDULE A TEAM SETS FOR ITSELF. How do you not understand this? The BCS system solves the very “problem” you attempted to lay out. Some wins are simply worth more than other wins. Some losses are less important than other losses. This is BRILLIANT.
Take a look at the schedule the Utah Utes set for themselves during their 2008 run…
1) Michigan
2) UNLV
3) Utah State
4) Air Force
5) Weber State
6) Oregon State
7) Wyoming
8) Colorado State
9) New Mexico
10) TCU
11) San Diego State
12) Brigham Young
Look at that weak sauce schedule. Congratulations! They finished with a good record after playing cup cakes. Now let’s compare that schedule with Florida 2008 shall we?
1) Hawaii
2) Miami
3) Tennessee
4) Ole Miss
5) Arkansas
6) LSU
7) Kentucky
8) Georgia
9) Vanderbuilt
10) South Carolina
11) The Citadel
12) Florida State
It’s not even close. I understand soccer moms wanting their kids to play but this isn’t pee wee soccer. If you want to be considered for the best, play the best. Utah didn’t do this. Florida did.
As we seem to have established the ONLY advantage the NFL playoff system has over college is that it’s “satisfying” to the masses. When you take this fight to quality teams, you’re entering my territory. You’ll never win there.
PS: Everyone who rec’d that post can now unrec. Thank you.

The 49ers had the 30th hardest schedule this past season.
Green Bay and New Orleans tied for the 13th hardest.
New York had the 19th hardest, but the difference between 19 and 13 is pretty slim. The difference between 30 and 19 is huge, and the difference between New Orleans 13-3 and San Francisco’s 13-3 is massive. If that is your biggest argument, and you think the Niners proved anything by having a better record, you should go back to the drawing board.

A: Because they got hot at the right time. Regular season wins mean nothing once you reach the playoffs. Look at the Falcons in 2010. 13-3 regular season, then we went into Atlanta and demolished them 48-21 in the Georgia Dome in their first playoff game.
There’s where your point doesn’t hold water. Regular season results mean nothing in the playoffs, in any sport.

I think the flaw here is your emphasis on "sets their own schedules"
Rankings, as in college football, allow for a relatively easy – if sometimes controversial – SoS determination. The NFL has no such mechanism in place (and the first person who claims Peter King’s power rankings are such gets all future sammiches summarily revoked). Sure, we can each subjectively say what team is the best at any given point, but there’s no way to quantify it in the NFL.
There is an unfortunate lack of parity across the board in NCAA D-I athletics, which requires correcting when determining champions. Most sports have developed a playoff system (i.e., basketball, field hockey), but football needs further correction. Even among the BCS conferences, there are clear ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ – we’ve seen the Dukes play the Stanfords. It’s not a fair matchup. There’s money to consider, facilities, even the history and tradition that sets colleges apart. One could also cite teenagers being able to choose their destination as part of this separation – sunny Florida is often more attractive than frigid Connecticut.
The NFL, however, is bound by an entirely separate set of rules. Each team has the same amount of money to spend on players – the lockout highlighted this quite clearly. It’s a lucky player who can choose his next team, but most players are instead bound by contracts. All of this helps maintain (at least the illusion of) parity. Each NFL game pits two teams with equal resources against one another. We as fans mock teams with poor records, or consider certain teams cesspits for various periods of time – but we forget that everyone playing the game is a trained and paid professional.
The BCS can, I contend, only exist where parity is not inherent to the system. Luckily for us, the NFL determines the outcomes of its games more by talent, gameplan, and execution than by available resources.

The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
I'd add in the fact that preseason rankings in college
can eliminate a lot of the pack from the title hunt before a single down is played, and the teams that come in to the year in the top 10 have a much easier time staying there than a team ranked outside of the top 15 has of getting there, no matter how well they play. Say the top 5-6 teams all end up with 1 loss,
2011: A wasted year
The crux of paragraph 1...
…relies on this statement. “Rankings, as in college football, allow for a relatively easy – if sometimes controversial – SoS determination. The NFL has no such mechanism in place…”
Well….duh.
I’m suggesting a MAJOR CHANGE to the NFL postseason. Of course there are certain pillars that need to be built and developed in order for the system to be successful in the NFL. Parity is obviously not perfect in the NFL. A variety of sources would need to be used some of which…
SoS, Margin of victory, Specific unit rankings, Injuries etc…
Representatives from each team could rank/assign points to teams from the opposite conference.
Who knows exactly how it should happen but to suggest that it couldn’t is a little short sited. I’m not sure why the fact that teams spend an equal amount of money (they don’t) on players messes everything up.
Here’s this for parity…(Concerning the years 2000 through 2010)
Indianapolis Colts win percentage for the decade – .719
Detroit Lions win percentage for the decade – .263
Slow clap? I think not.

Think about this for a minute. Last game of the year, the super star QB of the #1 ranked team in the BCS goes down in their final win. The BCS doesn’t account for this though. Instead you are going to see a shitty blowout by the #2 team after they kill the raw new QB…in the NFL this team woudl have been weeded out because they are clearly no longer the best team. its about pitting the best against the best and seeing who comes out on top. If you can’t see that you must be a petulant high school brat who lives in his mommy’s house.

2011: A wasted year
Answer this then.
Why did 1 loss Florida and 1 loss Oklahoma have more claim to the title game that year than 1 loss Texas, who beat Oklahoma, or 1 loss USC, not to mention TWO undefeated teams?
And just for comparison’s sake, here is the 2008 end of season (including bowl games) Strength of Schedule ratings.
Sure, the argument is there for Florida, if you don’t think the SEC is way overrated every year, but Oklahoma?
USC played a harder schedule than Oklahoma. Texas and Oklahoma had nearly identical SoS. Undefeated Utah was 5th overall, but not far behind, especially if you consider that they didn’t have a conference championship game to boost their rating.

Schindler’s List is an inferior movie when compared with Michael Bay’s Transformers 2. It might not have had the “drama” for you but it was a far superior movie.

by LanceArmstrong_LIVESTRONG on Feb 3, 2012 12:09 PM CST up reply actions
Not in the least.Schindler’s List has plenty of drama (I just recently watched it anyway). Maybe you are thinking of action?
Why don’t we take a look at the numbers though…
The BCS title game this year was terrible. Not only was it one sided and boring, but no one watched it 13.8 rating. The previous year was a 16.1. In fact every BCS game was down this year and they have been going down steadily the few years now. Why do you suppose that is? I guess people are too stupid to know what they have. Or maybe its because by the time they play the title games people could care less (like me) because there is no drama leading up to them, just weeks of time off.
By the way, Schindler’s List pulled in over $320 million in the box office. There were so many other great movies that people really didn’t watch that you could have used and you picked one of the high selling critically acclaimed movies ever. Weird.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
I'm suprised you didn't catch my point...
Schindler’s List wasn’t a big hit with everyone. It didn’t exactly set the youth market on fire and Transformers: RotF earned four times as much globally. If you think college football is more like Spinal Tap…no…you couldn’t have thought that.
I love the fact that you chose to focus on BCS title game ratings. I loved it simply because you walked right into the lions den.
Ratings for the BCS title game is beyond sporadic. There are so many variables that accounted for it’s “low” rating. The game was a blowout. The game was all defense. The game was between two teams that reside in low population areas. The game was between two teams that already played each other. The game had no headline.
Take a look at college TV ratings, or title game ratings over the past 20 years. They jump all over the place but the general arc is an ascending one. College footballs popularity has exploded the past two decades. Can’t get over the fact that you chose to go there. lol
A 13.8 rating, which was one of the lowest in recent memory, is still crazy high. That 13.8 rating dwarfs all other TV ratings for college sports in general. I wonder why college football has outgrown all other sports?

That’s not really saying a lot. Football and basketball are really the only two college sports that get consistent national coverage.
I wonder why college football has outgrown all other sports?
Because football is probably the most popular sport in America (or maybe basketball. They’re probably pretty close). The fact that they’re the only college sport that gets 2-3 games on most of the major networks probably helps too.
It’s certainly not an indicator that the BCS system is a good one. If that’s what you’re trying to imply.

Please please take your own advice.
The “intelligence” that goes into the BCS only leads to controversy, missed opportunity, and ultimately a poorer product.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
A few things...
1) controversy – So what? Controversy is great for the game.
2) missed opportunity – I can only assume that you’re talking about the lack of a playoff system in college which is unrealistic seeing as that you’re dealing with student athletes and not professionals.
3) poorer product – Go take a look at the last 20 National Championship games. The product could not be stronger.

1) not when your point is that it always puts the best two teams against each other
2) why does student athletes matter? Doesn’t seem to matter with the college athletes that play basketball or baseball.
3) straight up disagree…completely
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
....
1) Nice debate tactic. Putting words in my mouth that I never said. It’s simply a more consistent method for picking the two best teams. I never said it was perfect. Nice try though. lol
2) Trust me, it matters. You want students to be playing football throughout December and January? I see you like to think things through before you type them. lol
3) You’re you.

1) No your entire basis for your argument is that you want to see the best two teams play each other. Once again, you can’t even follow your own logic!
2) Again, being student athletes doesn’t matter in EVERY other sport…but football is special huh? AWFUL argument.
3) Coming from you this means nothing.

Lance, here is the problem with the BCS and with your suggestion
Each team has a different schedule and a different level of difficulty. In college football, a school makes their own out of conference schedule. You can’t just look at regular season and assume the teams with the best record are the best ones. Make them prove it against similar caliber opponents.
In the NFL, there isn’t enough equality to say the two best teams in the regular season should play in the Super Bowl. The Patriots played 2 teams in the regular season with a winning record and lost to them both…does the fact that they went 13-1 against all the teams with records .500 or worse make them the best team in the AFC? The only way to find out would be to have them play other teams that earned the right to be there. In the NFC, the Packers played the punching bags of the AFC, the AFC West. Should the fact that they had to play Oakland, Denver, and San Diego make them more worthy than the 49ers who had to play 3 playoff teams in the AFC North? The purpose of the regular season is NOT to crown a champion, it is to give those teams that did well the advantage with home games and bye weeks. Then they are required to prove they truly are the best in the conference by playing at the high level they had all year. If they truly are superior, it should show on the field. I would hardly say either the Giants or Patriots got to where they are by luck. They played better than the teams they had to face when it mattered. Would it be any different if a team was destroying a team for 3 quarters just to lose in the fourth? Would that mean that the team that was dominating for 3 quarters should get the win?
The only thing I MIGHT change would be that the 4 division winners and two wild card teams be seeded based on record. Meaning my beloved Giants should have been traveling to New Orleans in the first round because of their record not being as good as the Lions or Falcons and everything may have turned out differently (we can’t seem to beat New Orleans in that dome). The playoffs are a chance for teams that are decent to get hot, make a run, and have a shot. What would be the point in playing past week 12 if we were just going to say the two best teams play each other?
To answer your question on do I think the Giants are better than the Packers, Saints, and 49ers? I say that they are, RIGHT NOW. At that is what matters. No one cares about the regular season in the playoffs becuase it doesn’t matter once your there and THAT is what makes the NFL the best league there is in professional sports.

I think that the only problem with the NFL playoffs is the confrence system
which let the 8-8 seahawks in last year. Other then that, I much prefer it over every other system because every game counts. Just being the better team does not guarantee a win. With a 1 loss and go home system, the NFL has created a system where every second of every game is important and thats what makes playoff football so amazing.
Seahawks were 7-9 last year
Just saying.

someone must have gotten a warning for being overly argumentative from apc
your arguments come off as beyond comprehension. why does the NFL play 16 games, becuase they don’t play 4-5 times a week. why don’t they play more? becuase player’s careers would be over before they hit 30. with the amount of arthroscopic knee surgeries going on this time of the year, or players being told to HEAVILY rest, there is no need to play more.
As for the NBA, NHL, and MLB playoffs, there are MANY out there who think it’s too long. Seriously, it won’t be long until we see a July 4th NBA or NHL final. Those sports seasons last too damn long and people get sick of it. The regular season? Haven’t watched a single NBA or NHL game. Why? becuase they don’t matter. I did watch the Brewers, but that’s more becuase I lived less than 4 miles from Miller park and could ride my bicycle to the game for a little exercise and fun. The NBA should go to 3-3-5-7 playoffs. Do I care about the 2-7 game 4 matchups when 7 has a 2.% chance to win? no.
I Will watch the 3-6 matchup becuase sometimes, the 6 team is better than the 3 team. Look at the Seahawks upset last year. If one game is all you got, you’ve got to bring your a-game every damn day and any sort of pause in concentration may be your last. The intensity is wratcheted up and it’s more important. Also, the games in the playoffs are where they should be. The weekends. Nothing to do, nothing to worry about, but getting your hotdogs and beer on.
If Kobe or Lebron has an off day on game 1 of the finals, he can shrug it off, telling himself, “i’ve got 6 more to make up for it.” If a goalie lets in the last second goal of game 2, he doesn’t have to worry becuase he knows he is gonna be back tomorrow. If a pitcher gives up the game winning HR in the 9th, he knows he’s gonna get another chance later that week. Those sports don’t have the critical drama that the NFL naturally has. That’s why game 7’s are so hyped and they’re always talking about “If he can keep his nerves in check… yah da yah da.” NFL players don’t have such a luxury and that is what makes the NFL games more important and more dramatic.
I will probably not even watch any playoffs this summer. It just doesn’t matter. I’ll watch the finals, and wonder why it lasts 2 weeks to decide it. Monday-game. wednesday-game. friday, saturday- game. monday-game wednesday-game thursday-game. It’s so annoying and overly long, just unnecessary.
And as for only 12 minutes of actual play… ok. baseball lasts for .5 seconds just about every play. with a minute interlude. basketball. 1/2 of the playclock is taken up by someone walking the ball up past halfcourt to set up the triangle offense. NHL. lots of time is wasted with offsides, 2line passes, dumping the ball on the other side of the rink, time delaying plays to get the next wave on the play and so forth. Every sport wastes time.
I cannot accept your apology becuase you admit you were purposefully being argumentative, and that, simply put, is being a dick for being a dicks sake.

But this is easily one of the dumbest posts I have seen here in quite some time. Saying the BCS is good is like saying “the sky is orange” when it’s noon outside … it makes no sense whatsoever.
I actually think the BCS failed this year, too, and Oklahoma State should have played LSU, not Alabama. But that may just be me.
As for the NFL, the playoffs are a system of merit, not luck. You don’t luck into the playoffs, you earn the spot in the playoffs! And it’s not about who the best team during the regular season is, it’s more about who is the best team during the playoffs. Look at 2005. The Indianapolis Colts had a great regular season, starting 13-0, but they lost their first playoff game to the Steelers, who, by the way, won three road games in the playoffs that year. It doesn’t matter what happened in the regular season, but what does matter is how well you play in the playoffs.

…I propose then a playoff system with the top 6 teams from each conference. The best team from each conference has to play one less game then the worst playoff teams and gets home field advantage. That should balance things out a bit too then

he strikes me as the type of guy who becomes a military officer just so people HAVE to listen to him
You know the type. Slightly shorter than others. Once with a raging mullet screaming out the back in all directions, now, with a very close cut to hide his torrid male pattern baldness. Someone who througought his life, could never get a word in edgewise; first from the start as the second or third and weakest of four fortunately atheltic boys in his family, second as the awkward friend of the most popular girl in school (most likely using him becuase of his 87 mustang), he learned long ago, to get attention means you must resort to saying/believing in something so utterly insane, everyone rises up against him. But yet it is attention that he so desperately craves.
He finishes college, and after several years of flipping burgers or making pizzas, he discovers that you can gain instant credentials without question, if you have a degree. He wipes of that letters of college and science degree and walks into his recruiter station. Hell, they just got hit hard in the early part of the past decade, and we’re at war—> We’ll take anyone, even this “soup sandwich” to be an officer. So in he goes.
And sadly, he discovers something. Something missing in his life. People… many people, have to listen to him. . . becuase he outranks them. It doesn’t matter that they’re more qualified to lead men into battle, becuase he has the degree. And they have to listen to him. And there are so many of them… and if they disagree, he can punish them. in fact, he can punish them for doing anything that he doesn’t like. who is going to stop him? nothing will ever go beyond his reach becuase privates are afraid to go to a major’s office.
so he continues to say his outrageous things, becuase that’s all he knows. but he has a new passion. thursday safety briefings. he is a captain now, and his decisions carry with them the fate of 100 people. he can make them do whatever he wants. the once overlooked awkward 2nd or 3rd child of proud parents is now at the center of power. Drunk with power, he is a dick to absolutely everyone without compassion. He asks enigmatic questions similar to david koresh and ridicules everyone who doesn’t answer his questions that have no correct answer, becuase he will not accept someone’s opinion as fact unless it is in line with his own.
But what he doesn’t realize is that there is something missing in his train of thought. those soldiers may listen to them, but behind his back, they are talking about him. some braver people, may have even used a codename to talk about him, so they criticize this person, call him “Randy” for example… that’s the name we used… and talk about him while he even is in the same room.
Respect is never there. Lance, just go away. you’re pathetic. Stop checking on your post to come back at everyone here.

"struggles in other aspects of life"
like dating, making friends, being liked and respected???
sounds like a social anxiety. no wonder you’re admiring people with 2 or 3 sucessful marriages.
little hint bro. a sucessful marriage is one that does not end until death do they part. If it ends in divorce, it is, by definition, a failure. Unless you plan on killing your first two wives, which by technicality falls under that category, but since you had to kill them, it makes you a serial murderer and then again, a failure. perhaps you were talking in metaphors… maybe a sucessful marriage is one’s devotion to your work, or your country in service… but having two or three mariages means that you are a failure.
and 3.7 ain’t shit son. i got that skipping half my classes in college. i spent most of my time in highschool playing basketball with my friends or chasing skirts, and still I got a higher than that. can’t remember a class i had to study for.

Pos was kind of a fan favorite here in Buffalo. He was a second round pick, white, good looking, good size, intelligent…Amongst the non hardcore, he was our “star” that didn’t get the recognition because the rest of our defense stunk. Then Barnett came in, chased down running backs sideline to sideline, defended passes, showed great instincts and he just shattered Pos’s image.

LAL, as someone who was equally gifted and equally pretentious in high school, let me give you some unsolicited advice: get over yourself. You are smart, you have talents that other kids will never have, and you have a much higher ceiling than your peers. That is a great thing, and you should be proud of it.
But for the love of whichever deity you call your own, downplay that shit whenever you can. Humility will be a great asset for the rest of your high school years, and your best friend in college. It’s a lesson I learned far later than I would like, and my ignorance cost me friendships, job opportunities, and chances to grow as a person.
