Bears GM Jerry Angelo Is On His Way Out

Jerry Angelo Fired As Chicago Bears General Manager, According To Report - SBNation.com. After 10 years on the job, he wasn't the worst and he wasn't the best. He had some hits, and he had some misses. After their last Super Bowl appearance, the Bears have missed the playoffs in four of the last five seasons.

He shook up the front office two years ago, but that didn't seem to make it much better. While the injury to Gabe Carimi can't be blamed on the GM, the Bears have gotten little help from the draft in recent years. He also had an inability to pick good players on the offensive side of the ball (Rex Grossman, Cedric Benson, etc.).

It'll be interesting to see what moves the Bears make here. I doubt they'll pay for a big name candidate, but it seems unlikely they'll take a chance on a complete unknown.

Do the packers have to give permission for him to interview? If so, its HIGHLY unlikely they will as they’ve blocked that before.

…and the Vikings promoted Spielman to GM. Not sure if that was to protect him from being poached by the Raiders, Bears, or Colts or it that was a sign of a big change for that team (full on rebuilding?)

To me it was a strange move

they wouldn’t be the shape they’re in right now of not for Spielman. They really have shown an inability to build through the draft under him. Most core pieces the Vikings have right now weren’t drafted by the team.

Pretty sure that is one of the reasons he was cast off from Miami back in the day.

He’s made some good trades and FA pickups though.

That's really been the reason

why they were able to be a final four team in 2009. It’s just that those guys who were part of the Vikings core has seen their play drop off (Antoine Winfield, Steve Hutchinson) or retire altogether (Pat Williams).
Right now, I’d say that defense has two players other teams would really covet, in Jared Allen and Kevin Williams. Guys like EJ Henderson and Chad Greenway are really just slightly above average. On offense, besides Peterson, would you really covet a guy like Harvin, who your never really quite sure what the migraine situation will be like.

Cedric Benson wasn't bad.

He just didn’t become anything more than inadequate until after he left Chicago.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Exactly

But you don’t get credit for drafting someone if they only pan out once they’ve left your team.

Well, there were reasons behind that one. Marty and Smith had a very “strained” relationship. What sucks for them is they should have grabbed Wade Phillips or Cam Cameron to succeed him, not frickin Norv Turner.

I’m happy to see the guy go. I thought he did a pretty good job. For us, we should be happy Spielman got an extension in Minnesota. The Vikings haven’t really grown much of their own talent under him.

In some ways it's gotta be rough for a coach/front office in the NFC North

when you are constantly being compared by local fans/media to one of the best teams in football. In a sh*tty division you only have to win 9-10 games and everyone will call you a genius. In the NFC North you have to figure you gotta get close to 12 to have a punchers chance. That ain’t easy.

not to thrilled about it. He did help build the Indy franchise that dominated the AFC South for a decade.

If you couple him with a competent OC now that Martz is gone, it could be trouble in the division.

Maybe this will cheer you up?

An article arguing that a big piece of the Colts failure this season has been bad drafts, going back to spring 2007.

The Colts are a pretty smart franchise, and the Polians weren’t fired just because they needed a convenient scapegoat for their highest loss total in 20 years.

by DaveInTucson on Jan 3, 2012 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

honestly, IMO, he lucked into Peyton Manning

every bit of success they’ve had the last decade has been almost entirely because of Peyton Manning. He carried every one of those teams. it wasn’t like the Patriots with Brady where the defense was more important to their championships, or even like Green Bay last year where they had a superbly deep and talented overall roster that was able to overcome an onslaught of injuries.

Son or not, this is NOT good. Polian has built three franchises into greatness…he’s a brilliant football mind. His son is not which is our only hope for that being a bad deal. I hear they are a two for one kind of deal so hopefully the son ruins whatever good the dad would do!

Da Bears front office

I think if you’re going to clean house, clean house. Make Lovie’s job contingent upon the new GM’s opinion of him. Lovie has two more years on his contract – which typically means he only has one year left. With Martz “resigning” then what kind of OC are you going to get that will take the job for one year? So, you’ll make Cutler learn two systems in two years? You’ll draft for the guy coming in for 2012 and his system, but those decisions may not play out for the OC in 2013 a la Greg Olsen.

I’d bet that the McCaskey’s are simply too cheap to buy out Lovie’s contract and that’s the only reason they want to keep him.
