It's Been Reported That Reggie McKenzie Will Become The Raiders Next GM

Source -- Oakland Raiders to hire Reggie McKenzie of Green Bay Packers as GM - ESPN. That is some disappointing news. As director of football operations, McKenzie has been in charge of the player personnel department for the Green Bay Packers. I think his focus was more at the pro level, while John Dorsey was in charge of the college scouting. Here's what former GM Ron Wolf had to say about McKenzie:

"Reggie's a tremendous evaluator. He can tell you who can play and who can't play. That's what it's all about. Some can write reports but can't tell you who can play.

"Whatever that is, he has that. He has a feel."

I'm a huge admirer of Wolf, but he did also think Mike Sherman would make a great GM.

With a Super Bowl win, and a 15-1 record, it's not surprising to see some people being hired away. The Packers have been promoting from within in recent years, but that could obviously change at any time. We'll have to wait and see how this re-shapes the front office.

Any thought that the younger Wolf moves up in the organization.

It’s sort of been assumed he would be the successor to TT after he leaves, but now that Dorsey turned down an interview, I wonder if he hasn’t been promised a better position behind the scenes if he sticks around a few more years. I don’t expect TT to stick around after his contract runs out in 2015 since he was mulling not re-signing one last year after being burnt out (no surprise why).

I also saw some suspicion that McKenzie would bring Elliot Wolf with him.

How should I, as a Raider fan, feel about this?

Does anyone know what McKenzie’s role in the front office was exactly? Remember we’re used to it pretty much being a one man show. How involved was he with drafting, free agency, whatever?

Frankly, I’m glad that we got him simply because he brings the knowledge of a winning culture and how to build a successful team through the draft. I’ve often felt that Al’s greatest flaw was that he was often too willing to sacrifice the future for the now – of course part of that was that he wanted to build one last championship team before he passed away. Of course, even after he died we saw the trade which I don’t speak of.

You should feel THRILLED. He’s basically Thompson’s right hand man and has learned under one of the best GMs that has been around.

Which is why I'm excited.

Inique in the Green Bay organization

Is that they also factor in character, not purely on field potential. This is the main reason that even a relatively minor incident like Waldens domestic altercation is shocking to the Packer community. We aren’t the failed parolee dumping ground the Raiders have a reputation for accepting.
Also a huge reason we rarely have hold outs and disruptive prima donna types!

by Farveuless Pack on Jan 6, 2012 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Finley and Grant are the closest thing to big holdout Prima Donnas

And neither is that bad

The days of the Raiders being a "parolee dumping ground"

did largely come to an end after the Randy Moss experiment and the whale of Mobile. We were as shocked by McClain’s shooting incident as you guys probably were by Walden’s arrest. There aren’t many prima donnas on our team either, especially our core guys.

A steal

Reggie McKenzie has been instrumental in keeping the scouting department together and reshaping it during Wolf’s tenure and after Holmgren left taking some big names with him.McKenzie will put together a top flight staff and your drafts should improve tremendously. Hard to say if he’ll lean as heavily on draft and develop as Thompson does as McKenzie comes from the pro scouting vwing of the GM’s office.

Maybe a more important questuin.
Does anyone know what McKenzie’s role in the Raiders front office will be, exactly?

Based on info we have

his title will be General Manager. So yeah, he’ll probably be The Man of football ops.

Hopefully he brings a few of your scouts with him. Our scouting department was and is pretty small by NFL standards – when Al was around it didn’t matter, because despite some of his first round whiffs he still had few peers in finding guys in later rounds (Matt Shaughnessy, Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore) but obviously you guys got some pretty good people in your scouting department.

The important question is...

What is the draftee’s 40 time? :P

I would like to know exactly what it takes

to leave a championship team with a GREAT future to go elsewhere. If it’s money, how much more are they throwing at him to lure him away? I guess if money was everything I would have stayed with my previous emplyer. In my case, my sanity was worth more than they were willing to pay me and that was even after an offerthey made to me when I gave them my 2 weeks notice.

Umm…seriously? Career advancement, much more money, live in California, getting to run the ship and basically have full control, pride, etc. What are the reasons to stay? Comfort-ability?

How About

Even if Reggie were the next GM, would it not be easier to rebuild a weak Team in the AFC West than to try and keep one of the Top 3 teams of the past few years at the existing level? it seems as though he has a lot more room for error and improvements will be far more noticeable. If you were a QB prospect, who would you rather replace, Aaron Rodgers or Carson Palmer?

by Phana24JG on Jan 6, 2012 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

The only downside I would see in Oakland is the one Stroh brought up..

I wonder how much actual control he will have. If the new ownership lets him run the team insofar as a GM should, then he and the team will be fine and it’s a great promotion for him and a great personel guy for the Raiders.

I wish him the best! He’s certainly done his time and done his job well!

He will get full control.

Mark Davis isn’t his father – he’s more involved in the business side but doesn’t have any interest in football matters. The only worry is Hue Jackson not relinquishing his powers quietly, but I’m sure he knows where he stands.

The AFC West is a lousy division, and had Darren McFadden managed to play a few more games and we had a semi-competent defensive coordinator who understood the concept of adjustments and not defaulted to prevent every time we had a lead of any size, we’d be in the playoffs. I’m sure Reggie’s first major move will be hiring a competent DC.

I lost my top 3 draft picks: Forte, McFadden, & Andre Johnson in the APC league

Still won the championship game by 40+ points.

This speaks to the messed up situation I think still exists...

I’m sure Reggie’s first major move will be hiring a competent DC.

See a GM hires the HC and everyone that works directly under him. The HC, and the scouting dept. But the HC hires his own coordinators and position coaches. It is NOT a GM’s job to hire the OC or DC. That is Jackson’s job and the other problem is that Jackson, from what I read after Al Davis passed, was going to be pretty heavily involved in hiring the GM. That sets up a GM and HC who aren’t sure who’s ultimately in charge. There should be no doubt that McKenzie has the power to hire and fire who he wants in Oakland. and that includes the HC. If Jackson is involved in the hiring, it creates what is an almost inevitable power struggle.

Our Biggest Challenge is how we deal w/ Success!

by Strohman on Jan 7, 2012 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

There's going to be a power struggle regardless, I think.

Jackson was lucky that he was the last coach Al hired. Not sure he’d have survived this season under Davis. He mortgaged the future for a retired QB, and left McKenzie without a whole lot to worry about in the draft until day 3.

I will concede I don’t know the NFL corporate ladder so I have no idea where exactly he stands. When you work for a team that is doing as well as the Pack it’s hard to see their employees going elsewhere. Everyone has their thing and apparently he’s going to do his. I hope he is successful over there.

by bnbfishin on Jan 6, 2012 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

remember when the Patriots were winning their Super Bowls?

people were getting hired away from their organization every year. If you get offered a higher position on a different team, in most cases you take it.

football does not build character, it reveals character.
