NFC Wild Card Open Thread: Lions at Saints

NEW ORLEANS, LA - DECEMBER 4: Calvin Johnson #81 of the Detroit Lions breaks the tackle of Scott Shanle #58 and Patrick Robinson #21 of the New Orleans Saints to score a touchdown at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on December 4, 2011 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints defeated the Lions 31-17. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

Though the Saints are nearly unbeatable in their dome, the Lions can keep up in a shoot-out and their defense could cause the Saints some problems. The Lions have to avoid all the dumb penalties that killed them in their December loss in New Orleans. The Lions don't seem like 11 point underdogs to me. I'm not rooting for one team or the other. The Packers can beat either of them in Green Bay.

Turnovers

Surprisingly the Saints are minus 3 on the regular season. Winning the turnover battle isn’t a big part of their success. They’ve only had 9 INTs as a team for the season, which is 2 more than Charles Woodson had by himself. This early turnover might not hurt them.

Brees throws the ball up for grabs too much for my taste

it can be effective when you have Colston and Graham out there catching the ball, but it results in picks every now and then.

One of the biggest differences between him and Rodgers. The only time you see Rodgers throw it up for grabs is when he got the defense to jump offsides.

by sheehan on Jan 7, 2012 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

That's interesting..

Because I heard Darren Sharper on ESPN radio talking about how the Saints defensive “opportunism” (with Jenkins especially) could tip the balance in their favor against the Pack.

by PackFaninFL on Jan 7, 2012 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

that's hilarious, because the Packers' defense is known to be the most 'opportunistic' in the NFL

couple that with the fact that Brees gambles with the ball frequently, and I’d say the exact reverse is true.

I'm not a Packers fan, and I'm not trying to start anything.

But does anyone else thing the Pack are a little lucky to have caught the Saints in Week 1? They really seem like a completely different team now than they did 3 months ago, and I don’t know that you could consider them more than a 2 point dog to the Packers, even at home.

And that’s not up for debate. Lambeau in January is much different than Lambeau in September, though.

That's fair.

They gotta get past the 49ers first, too. Either way, it’s going to be a damn fine match-up in the AFC title game.

I can’t speak for the weather for that game, but for this weekend, coldest case, we’re getting another shot of cold air and temps are are in the low 20s, chance for snow. Best case, things are moderating a bit and we’re closer to the low 30s. We’ll see how things shake out.

unless the Steelers get hot, or Joe Flacco suddenly forgets that he’s Joe Flacco, the AFC team will probably get run over in the SB

I'd say the Ravens have the best shot at appearing the SB

Steelers don’t even have a decent running game anymore. Ray Rice is running like a man possessed, and every once in a while Flacco looks like a legit NFL QB. I’d put my money on Flacco rather than the Steelers finding a running game. You can’t chuck it deep to Mike Wallace every play…. even though that might be kind of fun to watch.

This is probably the most important non-Packer game of the playoffs.

Packers: Working on a dynasty.
Blackhawks: Taking care of business as usual.
Badgers: Chin up, boys.
Brewers: Move along, nothin' to see here.

I did not expect it to be only 14-10.

Come on, Brees1

This is not the Super Bowl, this is Detroit!

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

Lions

Missed a sack opportunity, and two chances for INTS. The Saints are lucky to get those 3 points.

that they

need to capitalize on turnovers would be one statement they need to correct.

Poor Detroit. What are defensive players supposed to do now? I hate what the NFL has become and I wish that stupid moron of a commissioner would resign.

by Timothy Bryce on Jan 7, 2012 8:37 PM CST reply actions

I like teams who score lots of points not from help with the rules but because they are really good. If they toned it down a little it would help the Packers even more.

I still think those Rams teams from about ten years ago were the best offense ever assembled in NFL history. They put up the enormous numbers, without the help of the rules.

True.

However, as far as Warner is concerned in St. Louis, you have to remember that he had Pace, Hakim, Faulk, Bruce and Holt on offense with him

They have to get rid of their reputation for dirty play.

Refs have a higher probability of making a PF call against them due to this. Their own damn fault.
