Second Half Open Thread: Lions at Saints

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 07: Calvin Johnson #81 of the Detroit Lions catches a pass for a touchdown in the second quarter against Malcolm Jenkins #27 of the New Orleans Saints during their 2012 NFC Wild Card Playoff game at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on January 7, 2012 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The Lions weren't supposed to be leading at halftime, but the Saints have turned the ball over twice in Detroit territory. I'm surprised the Lions have only 14 points, but both teams have been controlling the football on long drives. Each team has only had the ball four times. The Saints open the second half with the ball and they're going to need every possession they can get.

Lions 14, Saints 10.

So as we were discussing in the previous thread, I still think those Rams teams from about ten years ago were the best offense ever assembled in NFL history. They put up the enormous numbers, without the help of the rules.

No choise at this point....

there has to be protective rules with all the information coming out about concussions. It gets tiresome that people keep bitching about it. Are calls like that shitty? Yeah. Can it be improved upon? I’m sure it can. Give it time.

In Every Climb and Place....

by PhoenicianPakFan on Jan 7, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

I’m not referring to concussion based rules. I am referring to rules that give advantages to offenses that have nothing to do with concussions. For example, I wish they would call some more holds on lineman and let defensive backs be little more aggressive in terms of their contact with opposing receivers.

by Timothy Bryce on Jan 7, 2012 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Have no beef with that....

but you blamed the commish earlier, and those rules have been in effect for years. They want points so they favor the offense. Guess its good for business cause its making more money now than ever

In all seriousness with the concussions though, it is to my understanding that the companies that make helmets are getting closer and closer to developing a helmet that will eliminate concussions.

I liked how

The Saints had the receiver run behind the line of scrimmage at the snap. So a linebacker picked him up instead of a DB, the LB had no chance of keeping up with him, and the safety was a step late in coverage. And the Saints protection held up long enough to make it possible.

Probably not, unless they get 7 FGs

Still it’s not about offense. The Chiefs didn’t score more than 20 on the Pack, and they still won.

Drew Brees should be used to outdoor weather in CA.

Hopefully

The Lions fans wont blame this loss on the refs. The loss came because of the Lions mistakes. Not making those INT’s, not getting defensive stops, not turning those TO’s into points, and not sustaining drives on offense.

Yes they missed opportunities

but only have 1 penalty on the Saints and being called for BS penalties and missed calls (especially on that 2nd Fumble) really killed them. There were at least 2 INTs they missed as well
