AFC Open Thread: Steelers at Broncos

DENVER - AUGUST 29: Quarterback Tim Tebow #15 of the Denver Broncos makes a pass against the Pittsburgh Steelers and avoids a sack by linebacker Thaddeus Gibson #90 at INVESCO Field at Mile High on August 29 2010 in Denver Colorado. (Photo by Justin Edmonds/Getty Images)

The Steelers are favored by 9, but this could be a low scoring affair. I don't think Tim Tebow and his run first offense is going to fool the Steelers at all. But the Steelers offense is so banged up that they could get into the same funk that they were in during an ugly 20-3 loss to the 49ers back on December 19th.

No, not really. They just played the Falcons offense, not the Packers offense.

The thin air helps

I always thought the record tying 63 yard FGs kicked in Denver needed to have an asterisk by them. Not nearly the same as Dempsey kicking it outdoors in the swamp-like atmosphere of New Orleans.

I meant how it hit the crossbar & bounced back exactly to the 20

Dempsey also had a favorable kicking foot, if we’re really talking asterisks.

The people talking about this game are making it seem like the Giants were playing great football. They are talking about their 2007 run, the offense playing well, and the defense playing well.

Personally, I thought the Giants played a poor game. This was more about how much the Falcons failed, then how the Giants are getting hot. If the Giants play a game like they did today against us next week, we win it easily.

Somebody Care To Explain

Happened in the Texans/Bengals game and it just happened now. Player catches ball and runs out of bounds. Should stop clock right? Yet they let the clock run to kill the quarter.

by king.nothing on Jan 8, 2012 6:14 PM CST reply actions

The game clock stops when a ball carrier goes out of bounds maintaining forward momentum. The game clock continues if the ball carrier’s forward momentum is stopped in bounds before he goes out of bounds.

For most of the game, the clock is restarted when the line judge resets the ball and whistles play to continue. The exception is in the last 2 minutes of the first half or the last 5 minutes of the second half. In those cases, the clock does not start again until the offense snaps the ball.

It's always such a waste to trade up that much

moving up 3-5 spots is fine, even ten if it’s you’re guy, but when you go that far, the reward is almost never worth the risk. The team is just going to demand too much, and unless the pick is an All-Pro, you’ve lost the trade.

Why else would you call tails? They know Tebow can’t get more than a FG, and you might get a defensive TD.

No, it's just like the old OT, unless the 1st possession is a FG

Then, there’s a kickoff, and if it’s tied after that possession, it becomes sudden death

Steelers played it wrong

Safety moved up expecting the run and they threw it right at the middle of the field where the safety vacated. I didn’t see Polamalu anywhere so he must have been playing near the line too. Great play call by the Broncos.

Two possible instances

In all seriousness, I feel bad for Denver fans

and the Denver organization, for the long run. This will make the inevitable all the more difficult: Finding a real franchise QB instead of a continuing with this ridiculous gimmick.

They would have a great chance of getting a MAtt Flynn — ideal first round trading position for a 1st rounder for Flynn trade…

Now they are going to have to prolong their agony of trying to make a future QB coach of the Florida Gators into a legitimate NFL starter.

I've said this before

I certainly agree

But it’s not as if they didn’t negotiate their way through a crap QB situation this year. You’re probably right that his delayed their ability to move forward with someone who’s not Tebow by a year, but I don’t think they see as much liability in that situation as many others do.

by Clutch16 on Jan 8, 2012 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

The way I see it

Tebow’s got a lot of athleticism and developing him as a QB this offseason is what the fans want. If you can do something with him – get his throwing motion or footwork fixed, for instance – you can start thinking of him as a workable starter for a few years. If he works hard and then starts to regress under pressure in real games, you can scrap that experiment and figure something else to do with the guy.

It’s an opportunity cost, but I think they’re seeing the potential upside as higher than losing one draft/FA period of trying to find a new QB in 2012.

Play calling was An Issue for both teams there

But the crowd at MetLife destroyed any chance of Colonel Checkdown being able to audible into anything worthwhile. Between the noise and the pressure, Ryan was pure toast when it came to running his game. Meanwhile, Eli didn’t find his audible groove until the second half.

If the Giants fans want to take credit for that win, it’s well within their rights to do so. The 12th man was the difference all game long, even if it didn’t start paying dividends until Manning learned where Nicks was.
