Ask a Giants Fan II: The Coughlin Strike Back

So we meet again. *Cue proper soundtrack*

Next Sunday (I think), the New York Football Giants and the Green Bay Packers will battle in a match up that screams for 2007 parallels which I refuse to make.

One of your own kindly posted on BBV, and please feel welcome to come over throughout the week.

This game is the 6th time our two beloved teams will face off in the playoffs, but only the second time of the Super Bowl Era. If you like history, the Packers lead the postseason head to head record 4-2, with the two losses book ending the series: The 1938 NFL Championship, and the 2007 Playoffs.

May Sunday bring a great game and may the best team win

any chance i could not live in NY this week?

i hate it as a Packer fan. seems like everyone always gets on my ass. not you guys, obviously……just the Giant fans that don’t know much and are just looking to incite conflict. Anyway, I do have a question: where do you feel the Giants match up the best against the Pack?

Giants offense vs GB defense...

To be more specific. WRs vs DBs.

i gotta say our d line vs not just your o line

but any o line…. especially now that tuck and osi are finally both healthy at the same time. rodgers is extremely mobile but i expect him to be under pressure

Giants front four

Should be looking much improved from the last meeting. If we get pressure on Rodgers and force a play or two, that will be the game. If not, it will be tough to expect our offense to shoot it out, given that Green Bay, despite giving up a lot of yards, is very good at creating game-changing turnovers.

by Max Schwager on Jan 9, 2012 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

Our Dline is a mismatch for any team.

Though I think the Saints Oline would be the best test.

Yeah, those guys do have a good o-line

Brees has all the time in the world behind them

We did not have all our players healthy that week and some were out.

All pass rushers are back now and all playing at excellent level.

Just shows you how important being healthy is

The difference it has made in our defense is like night and day.

I wasn't talking about their o-line in the Giants game particularly

They have a stout o-line no matter who they play. You watch ANY Saints games, and Brees has practically all day behind them to try and find a target. But, you can’t blame injuries when they beat you by over 20 points either. That’s a cop-out

"The script doesn't change for us,… As long as we're taking care of things and keeping our focus on improving the quality of play, I don't think we can be beat. by TXPackerBacker on Jan 10, 2012 8:59 AM CST up reply actions

If there were injuries...

and these injuries hindered our teams ability to play at peak level, then why is it considered a cop-out for pointing out this fact. Clearly, the Giants Has played a much better game since many of our key personnel have returned. You cop-out argument is a cop-out.

by LoNJDTechnology on Jan 10, 2012 11:05 AM CST via Android app up reply actions

No, blaming a 20 point loss on injuries is

Injuries are part of the game. You have to plan for them. That’s why you have a 53 man roster. The next person up has to step up. Coaching is a big factor in that too. We lost 2 of our starting ILBs and the backups played fine, not missing a beat. We had injuries all over our o-line. Backups played fine for the most part. Blame the loss on coaching, not on injuries

"The script doesn't change for us,… As long as we're taking care of things and keeping our focus on improving the quality of play, I don't think we can be beat. by TXPackerBacker on Jan 10, 2012 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

While I agree that coaching shoild compensate...

for such a shortcoming, it is not always possible no matter how good the coaching. Mini varibles come into play when a player is call to take the place of a fallen 1st stringer. Experience, Skill, execution etc. I would argue that our coaching staff have done well considering the injuries that were sustainef by key players on our team. After all, we are the ones you will be facing and the upcoming game. Now that most of our key players are healthy it will be interesting to see how our teams matchup this time.

by LoNJDTechnology on Jan 10, 2012 1:18 PM CST via Android app up reply actions

I can agree on that

I think it’s going to be a good game because it looks like we’re gonna be the healthiest that we’ve been in a long time as well. Just like the G-men, most of our key players (mostly linemen) are coming back at the right time.

i dont think u can single out just one of the big 3

they are a trio that feeds off each other… so i think JPP osi and tuck will be a big factor if we want to win. if you guys contain the pass rush and limit the hits and hurries on rodgers, you could walk away with an easy win

But this is what brings up the question of whether Favre, I mean, Rodgers can get it done at Lambeau in mid January. Right now the forecast shows a high of 18 degrees for this Sunday. do you think the Giants are going to try the KC gameplan?

I don’t think your corners, even at full strenght can cover like the chiefs did, but your d-line is just as powerful. Do you think they try the whole “keep it away from Rodgers with the run game and just try to stop them enough to eek out a low scoring game” strategy?

I think with your running game as good as it could be if they were dedicated to it, you’d have 1/2 of the puzzle pieces. DBS and LBS would be the biggest problem. The chiefs were outstanding in those two areas.

by Nels Winkler on Jan 9, 2012 12:07 AM CST reply actions

Honestly i do not know much about the chiefs. But as for Cwebb yes he can shut down a reciever. I believe it all starts up front. If we are able to pressure Rodgers with 4 drop back 7 it will be a long day in the cold. That where it begins. Aaron Ross alot of Giant fans don’t love. He maybe hurt we will see what the week brings. I personally love ross for his hard hitting plays.

After today or yetsetrday now I do not know what will happen. Tebow won and we shut out the Falcons. I think you ran into a angry team last time we met. This time you going to run into a team that is on a high right now.

Our defense is playing really well right now. Even in the passing game.

by Giantstep on Jan 9, 2012 1:09 AM CST up reply actions

Here's some reasons it will be hard to use the "KC Strategy" in the playoffs
  1. That game was played at Arrowhead stadium. That can be a tough, noisy place to play, even when the Chiefs are a weak team. The Packers’ opponents will have no such advantage at Lambeau.
  2. The Packers will have Greg Jennings back, making it much harder to defend the pass.
  3. Defending the pass like the Chiefs did tends to open up the run game (note the Pack averaged 5.7 ypc vs KC). With James Starks and Brandon Saine healthy, a run-heavy game plan becomes a more viable option.
  4. The keep-away strategy really only works while the game is very close, or the opponent has the lead. Once the Packers start scoring, it will make it increasingly problematic for the Giants to stick to a “grind it out” game plan. (And note it was a near thing for the Chiefs—if the Packers had recovered the onside kick, that game could have easily gone the other way.)

Consider that our run defense

Is pretty damn good right now. Michael Turner was held in check (15 attempts for 41 yards).

Our defense will be much improved from our last visit, largely because Michael Boley is healthy, which is what nobody talks about. Our middle linebacker had been signed in the week (or maybe the week before) leading up to the Packers game. We’ve got Boley back and our line is healthy, which makes for a huge difference.

Does not tell you anything about what kind of impact not having Boley in there had. Boley is the one responsible for making the adjustments in coverage.

And as far as Blackburn goes, the play he made was great, but it might cause you to overlook the times he wasn’t in position. Not really his fault, but it is what it is. Can’t really minimize that, unless you’re going to pretend that one play is indicative of a football player’s entire performance in a sixty minute contest.l

to be fair

we were missing 3 OL and James Starks took 3 plays.

People (being the media) have suddenly forgot about Starks, the guy is awesome IMO. Great natural runner, great receiver, was very close to breaking big plays all year.

I think he will be X factor on offense, MM will run close to 20 times this game and/or incorporate a lot of screens and dumpoffs.

Enjoy the game, should be fun to watch!

Better than it was week 13?

Rodgers was only sacked twice in that meeting which, to be honest, is better than average for our o-line.

JPP has been a big difference maker for the Giants. But looking back at the W13 stats, it seems like he was mostly held in check—3 tackles, no assists, and no sacks. If the Packers can hold him to similar stats on Sunday, that will be a big piece of what they need to advance to the Championship game.

by DaveInTucson on Jan 9, 2012 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

Osi was injured

And also our personell was used long.

On one of Rodger’s TDs, there was a 3 man rush sent, giving Rodgers tons of time to find an open receiver.

Other times we’d have all 4 DEs, which if they don’t get a pass rush quick, leaves gaping running lanes for Rodgers to scramble through.

That would theoretically be a huge difference.

as were Boley and Tuck

even though they played, they were no where near as healthy as they are for this game, and that’s huge. When all 3 are in, somebody’s getting through and Boley has taken out Tony Gonz and Jason Witten in consecutive games, though I still think Finley puts up his share.

DaveInTucson – I only really saw highlights from that game, so I can’t speak to exactly how they played, but let’s just say I wouldn’t replace a single guy on our line with one of theirs… even Hali.

by sheehan on Jan 11, 2012 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

I think what could potentially be the difference maker

in this game from the last one is the d-line and a much more effective use of it.

Fewell has seemingly eliminated his fetish for the 3 man rush. In addition, he’s using more DTs in passing downs that last game where he’d use four DEs.
In theory that sounds good, but having JPP on the inside diminishes his strengths. Instead, Canty or Bernard or Joseph will be in there, and they can get a pass rush going.
Last time when we played man to man, the coverage was generally good enough, but the middle would open up allowing Rodgers to scramble for the first down.

The key for the Giants’ defense in my view is using man coverage, and getting a pass rush going without leaving running lanes for Rodgers.

then obviously we will be in for a long day because then we will have to bring our safetys up. I don’t want to think about what will happen with the pass game in that scenario.

However, we are stopping the run against teams as good or better at running it than GB. If we stop the run, and put BG in third and long, then it’s game on. Strength against strength. The best pass rush in the NFL vs. perhaps the best passing game in the NFL.

Thoughts on the Giants secondary

I know this unit is banged up, but how do you expect them to play. Do you think they will be able to hold there own. More importantly what is your opinion of the two rookies back there, and how much do they play(Prince and Tyler mfing Sash)

by o-lineu on Jan 9, 2012 8:14 AM CST reply actions

really they play pretty well

Ross is not impressive, but he shows up now and then. Webster is absolutely great, he has shut out Dez Bryant twice, Roddy White, whoever the number 1 is he blankets.

The problems start with the injuries- there is no depth as far a 3rd corner really, just Prince who has been just decent in limited action. Then, you have Kenny Phillips, he’s been excellent on one side, but the other side is generally played by Deon Grant who is not quick. Rolle is a good safety, but not so good in the slot corner, which is where he usually plays due to injuries. Sash is used sparingly, seems just ok.

And of course, the main issue is at LB, where Boley is good in coverage but whoever is manning the MOF as a Mike or a Sam is just not great at getting depth and closing windows. That’s where Rodgers will be able to do the most damage, there and when the Safeties play close to try to cover for the LBs, they can be beat deep obviously.

Was speaking only of your secondary vs the Packers. So I responded only w/ the matchups that I see vs our WR. I fully understand that you have some advantages elsewhere on the field. Particularly on the DL vs our OL. However that, IMO is somewhat mitigated by Rodgers presnap ability and also his legs. Webster IMO, has no chance of successfully defending Jennings in man coverage. Jennings is a superb route runner and that is what gets him open more often than not. I hope you try to cover Finley w/ Boley. He’ll be open alot!

The gents running game scares the hell outta me. WHat its likely to come down to is the NYG being able to control the clock and put together long TD scoring drives, against the Packers ability to turn the ball over on D. That will decide the game!!

We played a ton of zone, largely because of Boley’s injury. Injuries in the secondary didn’t help either. We had Blackmon covering Nelson on that final drive if I remember correctly. Doing it during a game, and still having sour grapes over it after the game has ended. I, for one, will complain about obvious stuff during the game. I will also agree with the refs if they call something against us that is right. Sometimes I may even comment that we got away with stuff. But that is all during the game. Afterwards, don’t complain.

And to suggest that questionable calls or no calls don’t go against both teams is a bit ridiculous. Not that you did that, but others here have said that.

You want to know the difference?

Some of us at least try to be above that pathetic crap. Go read a gamethread from here. When people bitch about the refs, Packer fans included, it isn’t very positively received around here. You can try to point to my comments about the Giants getting away with holding and DPI, but try reading them in the tone they were written, instead of whatever tone fits your chosen narrative at any given moment. The same goes for all of the other comments from our side in this thread that you see “complaining” about the refs.

Almost NOBODY around these parts tries to pin anything on the Zebras, no matter how bad they might be in a game. Last year, when the Packers had 21 penalties, 18 accepted and lost to the Bears, who had 5, by 3 points. You know who won that game for the Bears? the Bears did. You know who lost that game for the Packers? That’s right! The Packers! Good job, buddy! While the blog you come from may not be the only one that complains, the one you’re visiting is apparently one of the only ones that tries not to.

I guess my point in all of this is that you need to change shampoos, and if I might make a suggestion:

Packers: Working on a dynasty.
Blackhawks: Taking care of business as usual.
Badgers: Chin up, boys.
Brewers: Move along, nothin' to see here.

won't be surprised

if it is NO vs NY for NFCCG.

Giants are playing much better.

One extra pro-bowler on DL makes a huge difference to a team.

I made the mistake of doubting Eli, on APC, before the 2007 game. Never again. I like Aaron better, but Eli can play with the best of them.

I do like that we get our two pro-bowl OL back, Sitton and Clifton. Hawk and Bishop are back as well, but would prefer to see Bishop and DJ Smith (Smith is faster and can chase Bradshaw to the side).

Anyways, should be great weekend for football.

Past stats don’t mean sh*t in the playoffs. Who would have guessed Tebow would hit a 80yd TD throw to win against the Steelers?

Packers can be beat, so can Giants.

I think the one similarity between this year and 2007 is that I expect the game to be that exciting, and that’s it. All the stats don’t matter in the playoffs. The Packers have a great team, and I’m glad the Giants look to be peaking heading into this one. I’d be really nervous otherwise.

I’m going out on a limb here and saying the score won’t be very high at all. I expect a defensive battle. It’s rare to see two teams put up points like that twice in the same year.

by Max Schwager on Jan 9, 2012 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

Giants are playing much better

Not a high bar to clear, after a 4-game losing streak.

I wouldn’t get too excited about beating a couple playoff washouts to get into the tournament. And the Falcons? 7 wins against teams with losing records, and exactly one road win against a team with a winning record (and that was the Detroit Personal Fouls Lions).

Yeah, getting into the playoffs is an accomplishment, and a playoff win is nothing to dismiss. But: the Packers >>>> Falcons, Cowboys, or Jets.

JPP

Scares the crap out of me. We have Clifton, whom I love, or Newhouse, who has a bright future, going against one of the best defenders in the game.

The guy is on fire right now.

Point is the teams they played weren’t awesome, but they had grown men trying to stop JPP and couldn’t do sh*t about it.

Front 4 can cover up a lot of flaws on a defense.

This team doesn’t look that different from the 2007 team in structure.

by Acme on Jan 9, 2012 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

2011 != 2007

This team doesn’t look that different from the 2007 team in structure.

Not sure how you get that.

For one thing, I think the 2007 defense was probably better than the one we have now. If we can hold the Giants to 20 points through 4 quarters, Sunday should be an easy win.

For another, I think Rodgers is a much better quarterback in critical close-score, late-game situations. Given the situation at the end of the W13 game: 0:58 on the clock and a time out to drive the length of the field for a game winning score. Who do you want for your QB, Favre or Rodgers? Given how many times Favre has face-planted in situations like that, I think the answer is easy.

by DaveInTucson on Jan 9, 2012 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

I would take eli

he is leading the league in the fourth quarter in QB rating. 120’s I think. He also has 6 4th qtr comebacks this year. I will admit Rodgers is the better quarterback, but there is no quarterback I’d rather have for that fourth quarter then Eli.

LOL, keep repeating that. Where was Eli the other 3 quarters?

Four game losing streak that featured

Losses of a touchdown or less to the 1 and 2 seeds in the NFC. We beat the top-seeded New England Patriots without Hakeem Nicks or Ahmad Bradshaw.

And not to take anything away from your win in the regular season, but the Giants are coming into this game much healthier on both sides of the ball.

The Giants are playing the most complete football they have all season. Judging by your senseless arrogance, I take it a loss would hit you the hardest. Or at least, your fellow fans should hit you the hardest for upsetting the football gods.

Well I think you guys might be in for a tough outing on Sunday

Since 2004, there have been two playoff games played at Lambeau. Brett Favre won one of those games. Eli Manning won the other.

Needless to say, Eli’s going to be putting on a winning clinic this Sunday when a frail Rodgers is found to be incapable of handling Wisconsin in January.

There was some legitimate concerns about Rodgers' durability going into 2008
  • Played in relief of Favre during 35-0 beatdown by Pats in 2006 and broke his foot
  • Shortly after playing in relief of Favre in 2007, pulled his hammy during practice
  • Wasn’t there a 3rd injury for Rodgers prior to 2008? I thought so, but can’t remember anything

But, that being the past, and me mentioning it, those do count. In response to Max, what has happened to Rodgers to indicate being frail? Matthews hammy has been bad since he started playing for us, does that mean he’s frail? Woodson seems to practice every week, is he frail?. In Rodgers 4 years of starting, he has only missed 1 start due to injury and that was a concussion. Where does being frail come in?

Well, let's see
  • 2007 vs Giants: Favre OT interception
  • 2004 vs Vikings: Favre 4-int meltdown
  • 2003 @ Eagles: Favre OT interception
  • 2002 vs Falcons: just a disaster of a game, plenty of blame to go around
  • 2001 @ Rams: Favre 6-int melt down. 3 pick-6s
  • 1998 @ 49ers: The “Rice Fumble” game. I don’t remember any late picks here, but 2 ints and 2 lost fumbles definitely kept the 49ers in this game
  • 1997 vs Broncos: they came early, but a pick and lost fumble lead to 10 easy points for the Broncos
  • 1993-1995 @ Cowboys: various combinations of Favre sucking and the defense unable to stop Aikman/Irvin/Smith

For Favre’s playoff games with the Packers, there is a striking correlation between wins and rush yards allowed by the defense: in every playoff win except 1, the defense held the opponent to 90 or fewer rushing yards.

Giants have always been a quality road team. Hell, beat New England in New England this year, and that’s a tougher place to play than Lambeau in the Belichick era. On another note, the last four teams to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl:

Packers (10-6)
Saints (13-3)
Cardinals (9-7)
Giants (10-6)

You must not have been very optimistic last season

Actually, at the start of the 2010 playoffs, I was just hoping the Packers could beat the Eagles. At least, to make it a game. (The Packers had 3 total road playoff wins during the Favre era, so essentially winning 4 road games in a row was not something I thought would happen… at first)

your argument is based on record trumping everything, yes?

No. But I think the idea that the Giants are going to come into Lambeau and flat-out beat the Packers in some kind of glorious re-enactment of 2007 is …well, a major stretch.

Yeah, there’s always the possibility that the Giants (like the Chiefs) catch the Packers having a bad game and steal a win, “any given Sunday” style.

The Giants have gone 4-1 in their last 5. But would you honestly say that the Packers are in the same class as the Jets, Cowboys, and Falcons?

I would not.

Let me correct

the 2011 Giants are not the 2007 Giants. 2011 Giants will leave their own legacy.

You miss the point

Simply looking for an acknowledgment that a great deal of evidence points to this not being an “easy win” for you guys.

Look no further than:

1) During that losing streak, the Giants played the Packers down to the wire (38-35) loss.

2) Giants are 5-3 on the road this season (4-4 at home). Without bringing up 2007, I’d say we are a good road team. One of those five wins snapped a 39 game regular season home win streak for the Pats.

3) The Giants are the only team with a quarterback who has experience playing at Lambeau in January. I am not saying Rodgers will play poorly, just that this is a question mark for him.

4) Eli Manning is clutch. Set the record for touchdown passes in the fourth quarter this season. Even in today’s NFL, he’s the only one to have broken Johnny Unitas’ record.

5) Our defense is at its healthiest, and the evidence is in the fact that we shut out a pretty good Falcons offense. We held the Cowboys to 14 points, and its hard to say Dallas doesn’t have a good offense.

6) Number 1 seeds over the past 5 years post a collective record of 4-6 in the divisional round. I don’t know how indicative record was of their teams. Five of those six teams won 13 games or more. Only one (the 2008 Giants) won just 12 games.

by Max Schwager on Jan 10, 2012 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

Giants are 5-3 on the road this season

4 of those road wins were against 8-8 teams. Perhaps you noticed the Packers are not a .500 team?

the Pats.

Sure, if the Packers turn the ball over 4 times, the Giants could get a 4-point win at Lambeau, too. But you may wish to note the Packers haven’t turned the ball over more than twice all season, and only had that one interception vs the Giants.

Or, if the Packers receivers start dropping balls again, Rodgers posts another sub-.500 completion percentage, and the refs make a couple more extremely questionable OPI calls, the Giants could get a win at Lambeau.

All I’m really saying is, those are a couple really big ‘ifs’.

The Giants are the only team with a quarterback who has experience playing at Lambeau in January

One game. Four years ago. Also, Rodgers, Cutler, Flynn, Stafford, Hasselbeck (twice), and Vick have all played @ Lambeau in January, and that’s just limiting to guys who started in 2011.

Rodgers als has recent experience with playoff games in cold weather (Packers @ Eagles was 30F (wind chill 18F), Packers @ Bears was 20F, wind chill 7F).

by DaveInTucson on Jan 10, 2012 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

Eli just played at Lambeau last year

25 degrees, 17/33, 301 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INT

At the risk of stating the obvious, if that is all he can muster this week, the Giants will lose this game. By a lot.

by Ben T on Jan 10, 2012 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

And in the playoff game at Lambeau

he was 21/40, 251 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs, 72 rating. I don’t think that will be good enough to win this time. Maybe it will, you never know.

I think the Packers are the better team, I think they’ll win, but I won’t be surprised if the Giants win. I’ve watched the NFL long enough to know the better team doesn’t always win, especially in the playoffs.

By your logic

the Redskins are a better team than the Giants. Maybe you think that’s true, I don’t. Just like I don’t think the Chiefs are a better team than the Packers, but they were on that one Sunday.

What about a few years ago? I remember someone had a chart showing that in the NFL Team A beat Team B, who beat Team C, who beat Team D and so on. It covered every team in the league. So who was the best team that season?

I take it you don’t believe in upsets then? Since the team that wins is always the better team?

I get a kick out of the fact that you think the 2007 Giants were a better team than the 2007 Patriots. They sure were on Super Bowl Sunday, but what about week 17 when the Patriots beat them? Are you saying the Patriots were the better team, then a few weeks later the Giants were the better team? Which is it?

i dont think that a team is the same team as they were the month before. in the nfl things change week to week. the giants right now are not the same team that lost to the redskins and thats just a fact. take it however you want to take it, but this argument is going nowhere. see ya sunday.

I think we're getting to the same place

but with 2 different paths.

I think we both agree that the team that wins the game is the better team at that time, which is all that really matters. The fact that I think the Giants are better than the Redskins and the Packers are better than the Chiefs really doesn’t mean much as the Redskins and Chiefs were better when it really mattered.

I will come back here on Monday, or late Sunday and say the Giants were the better team if they win. What I’’m saying, and what I really believe, is that the Packers are a better team. But as I said, that doesn’t matter if you don’t prove it on the field.

History of 7-loss teams in the playoffs
  • The Super Bowl has been won by a 6-loss team 3 times (49ers XXIII, Giants XLI, and Packers XLV)
  • No team with more than 6 losses has ever won the Super Bowl.
  • There’s only been a handful of 7-loss teams to make it as far as the Conference Championship game

well everyone knows that on average the 2011 Packers are a better team than the 2011 Giants

the Packers are just a more talented all around team, and have a much better QB.

But it doesn’t matter who’s better in general, it matter who’s better this Sunday. If the Giants are better this Sunday, they’ll win, and you won’t see too much bitching about the better team not winning. Because if they were really the better team on that day, they would have won.

About #4
4) Eli Manning is clutch. Set the record for touchdown passes in the fourth quarter this season. Even in today’s NFL, he’s the only one to have broken Johnny Unitas’ record.

That clutch stuff is bull crap. Eli set the record for TD passes in the 4th because he didn’t play as well as he should have in the first 3 quarters. If Eli played well in the first 3 quarters, he wouldn’t have had to throw all those TD passes in the 4th to get a win.

Who would you want? A guy like Rodgers who wins the game in the first 3 quarters so your backups can play the 4th, or a QB who has to throw 2TD’s in the 4th in the majority of games to get a close win?

by Shoes31 on Jan 10, 2012 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Clearly

the answer to your question is, and always will be, Tebow.

by Ben T on Jan 10, 2012 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

How many passes has Flynn thrown in the 4th?

Aside from week 17, Rodgers was rarely pulled, evidenced by Matt Flynn’s 5 pass attempts through weeks 1-16. Eli Manning’s passer rating is roughly 12 points higher than Rodgers in the fourth quarter.

Sorry to inform you that while your passing attack is tops in the league, GB did plenty of stat padding along the way as well.

Oh, and Favre played great with a lead. Rodgers is so good that his backup put up a better stat line than he had all season in the final game. Looks to me like it might just be the weapons around him! But my head isn’t up my own ass. If yours is then I will gladly help with removal provided you address me with a little more courtesy, a little less arrogant bullshit. ;)

Eli’s played incredibly this season. The Giants have had a busted offensive line and no running game all season. Also, as a team, I’m pretty sure the Giants are second in the league in dropped passes (correct me if I’m wrong). Defense has been pretty poor. Pack’s D makes up for a lot of yardage lost by creating a lot of turnovers.

A record that has been standing for half a century is broken, and it’s bullshit? That makes sense to somebody.

After the big win, I will field questions on Sunday as you guys get ready to watch the Giants take on the winner of Saints/49ers in the championship game.

Because I am that kind of guy!

by Max Schwager on Jan 10, 2012 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Are you going by career stats for 4th quarter rating?

Because this year Rodgers had a 114.3 and Eli had a 110.0.

I won’t deny Eli had a great year. He did.

What team led the league in drops? I don’t have the list here but my guess would be the Packers, seems like we had plenty. And we know plenty about having a busted OLine. Maybe not as bad as the Giants, I have no idea how it went for them, but there has been plenty of different lines used.

And Flynn didn’t have many attempts prior to the last game because when he did play it was in the 4th quarter with a big lead. They ran the ball more than they passed it.

I'm finally stepping in...

I’d like to know where someone said the Packers will win easily. We all know the Giants are a threat and are capable of beating the Packers. I think when a lot of users at APC keep hearing how the Packers will lose though, it puts them on the defense. This entire thread has gone from asking about each others team and learning about them to complete utter trash talking.

Yes, the Giants are 5-3 on the road. The Packers are 8-0 at home. So what’s the logic in bringing that up? The Giants have a chance at winning because they have the weapons on offense and a pass rush that can rattle Rodgers. The Packers can win because they have the weapons on offense and a defense capable of producing multiple turnovers. End of discussion.

One game at a time...

right?

I am guessing that the Yahoo boards and crap like that have a bunch of these “Packers will win by 30” or “Giants will sack AR 20 times and kill the Packers”.

Only thing I have seen a few times is some guys saying Giants have NO chance, which is also crap.

I love the Pack, but this game can go either way if O-line isn’t playing awesome.

by Acme on Jan 12, 2012 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Lol

McCarthy does not always have Flynn throw passes in the 4th. If you are going to use pass attempts as evidence of a new QB, try to pull that crap somewhere else. Because that is laughable. Rodgers was pulled in a fair amount of games. As far as stat padding, I have no problem with it. Your playing to win the game, and I don’t care how you do it as long as it gets done within the confines of the rules. However, Rodgers is not in there throwing TD passes when we are up by 21 points. Up by 14, sure he is. Because that’s not a safe lead.

If you want to argue that Rodgers is a system QB, go ahead and show everyone else your stupidity. Sure, Rodgers has great weapons. It’s not his fault that his team knows how to draft and develop. Are we going to subtract how amazing he has played because he has great receivers? No, because that is ignorant and a lazy analysis. For that matter, I wonder how Eli would do without Victor Cruz. Oh, that’s right, he lead the league in INT’s last year. Forgot about that.

You want to talk about a busted OL and no running game? Your barking up the wrong tree pal. Maybe you should look at our situation too before you try ignorant arguments. And about dropped passes, we actually lead the NFL in that category. Sorry pal, myth busted.

I said that the clutch argument is bull crap if your just going to look at TD passes. Try looking at their efficiency and how the game played out. If Rodgers has to do a last minute drive to win the game, I’m sorry but I view that as we failed at some point during the game.

And if the Giants do win, feel free to field questions on Sunday at your own forum, and if you can’t find it because your head is so far up your ass, here it is.

address me with a little more courtesy, a little less arrogant bullshit

I don’t see the majority of us saying that it will be a blow out. In fact, I would say that most of us have not even posted our predictions. And us not saying how we think the game will turn out is not arrogant.

But when somebody points it out, take it on the chin.

Now that is an arrogant statement. Because you are presuming that you are right.

And I highly doubt you would hold a more productive conversation with a pile of bricks. For one, they enjoy more substance than air in order for them to stick together.

You have valid points?

You said a couple of things (albeit, ridiculous things) about one premise of my argument. I guess that discredits it, yes?

What substance does your argument have? Rodgers plays well through three quarters, so that means Eli Manning’s fourth quarter stats are garbage? What is clutch then?

I posted a number of points. Respond to more than one of them with something a little less than “that’s bullcrap!” and we can talk. Until then, the whining about how I’ve missed your unrelenting displays of humility is a bit much.

A shit argument is about the same as talking shit, yes? Sorry I am just calling it how I see it.

by Max Schwager on Jan 11, 2012 9:47 PM CST up reply actions

I have said a number of things

Which support my argument with facts. And I have responded to other points of yours, without using this is bullcrap (except about that one clutch stuff, just calling it like I see it). If you can’t see it, oh well.

And maybe you should look up the definition of arrogance and see how it is different than confidence.

How about this for stats: GB Average points scored at home is 40 points. NYG average points scored away is 26. Final Score – 40 to 26.

Taking it one step further and averaging in points allowed by defense brings it to 34 to 24. Would predicting either outcome be an arrogant statement?

You want to take that back?

We did not have the worst record, and we were actually tied with the #2 and #3 seed with regard to records. Quite unlike your situation, where the Giants are in sole ownership of the worst regular season record in the NFC. And we were hardly playing the worst football out of the NFC leading up the the playoffs. Not saying the Giants are/were, because they weren’t.

Only a few people think the Pack are going to blow the Giants out of the water, far less than a consensus. It’s just we don’t see why you have to throw out regular season stats or records. Its how we predict people are going to play, based off of 16 previous games that offer great insight into how teams are playing.

Do I think BJ Raji all of a sudden will be a terror in the passing game, and that Clay Matthews will get 3 sacks in this game? No, simply because for various reasons that has not happened all season long. Just like we don’t expect too much production from the ROLB spot, even though we probably do have a new starter. To suddenly expect a different team come playoff time is a bit ridiculous.

i take it back i was fired up when i wrote that last comment up there....i dont expect anything less from the packers

the point i have been trying to make is that the giants have not played like a 9-7 team in their last 3 games. i fully expect a-rod to come out and throw all over us, why wouldnt he? it was comments about our losses to washington and seattle that just made me shake my head… and there is just no reason to think that eli is going to all the sudden come out and throw 4 picks…

The Packers did lead the league in interceptions this year

by The Blood of Eli on Jan 10, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough

I know Eli threw a bunch of picks against us last year, but that was last year when you all were trying to get into the playoffs and he was pressing to make plays. This year, without looking at the stats, it looks like he cut back on the turnovers drastically. What do you think is the reason for that? Something to do with the emergency of Cruz and Manning have a few reliable targets, or him just making better decisions and not pressing so much?

by Shoes31 on Jan 10, 2012 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

hes just played better and made better decisions

also, his receivers have helped him out more this year than they did last year. i dont know that cruz actually helped cut down on his interceptions. i think a more reliable hakeem nicks did that. what cruz did is allow eli to finish the season a stone’s throw away from 5,000 yards.

How has the Prince played so far

Because if Ross is out, wouldn’t your secondary be dangerously thin? So how has Amukamara played, and where has he been playing mostly (Nickle, Dime, Outside)?

by Shoes31 on Jan 9, 2012 1:33 PM CST reply actions

this question was asked a few comments up

but we really dont have much to grade him on. he was hurt all training camp and missed like 10 weeks or something. he came back and had an interception in his first game. the next game he got benched for sucking BAD. yesterday he got back into the mix when aaron ross went down with a concussion. yesterday he filled in nicely when ross went down and if ross cant go this week we will be relying heavily on a good game from our 1st round pick.

Without much research on my end (actually zero research, just going off the fact that I was at the NFCCG and Favre didn’t look like he wanted to be there :)), it seems like you guys had a better secondary in 2007.

Interesting, your QB rating against this year (one of the best defensive ratings IMO) is pretty average. Could be from early season injuries.

Gibril Wilson was pretty good at saftey

James Butler was avg at best , both went on to suck after leaving.

Corey Webster was only in his 2nd yr , A Ross was a Rookie. Sam Madison was old as ass and Kevin Dockery was a liability.

The Dline was wrecking havoc from week4 in 07 . That really helped the stats for that yr. That hasn’t been the case this yr.

A Rolle
C Webb
K Phillips
A Ross
are all better.

we've IR'd a half dozen CBs this year

so we’ve been beyond dangerously thin all season. Heck, we’ve even picked up guys off the scrap heap, got em playing decent, then IR’d em just as fast.

So, yes, Ross out would be HUGE. If Prince has to cover Nelson or Driver all game, we’d best hope the DLine is in beast mode all day long. After Prince it’s your old boy Will Blackmon, and I don’t think I need to tell you how bad that is. Rolle is the only other “corner” you will see, the rest are safeties (Sash, Martin, who play ST)

Not necessarily

The way I see it, I don’t want this game to be determined by officiating one way or another. I hope the game is called fairly, though that’s sort of a pipe dream in the NFL, as it typically favors one team or another.

Not going to get into the last game and some of the calls. Some people will, but hey, I just don’t want to hear that come up after this game, no matter what the outcome is.

And they lost to a career backup who was playing with other backups. Stafford is Tony Romo north, good fantasy numbers bad quarterback.

Just so I get it straight...

Our team who has won a SB in the last few years, has the best DL in the NFL, has three top 7 DE’s, 2 of which are top 4, has a QB who can throw for almost 5,000 yards despite NOT playing in a dome, has two of the top 10 WR’s in the NFL, and made the playoffs after overcoming a rash of injuries to KEY players, not just scrubs, is overrated?? HMMMM, if we’re overrated what does that make a team who got beat by GB without Rodgers, Matthews, or Woodson?? Hell, not even got beat but got TORCHED by Matt Flynn.

I also had to warn 5 of your brethren on BBV

All ACM folks… so blame that on your pet Lion. ALso had to warn up a couple BBVers too, but then I am a fair and just fella.

My point is you guys normally act with civility and some intelligence, but not seeing much of it thus far. It is disappointing, ACM is one my favourite blogs normally to go read up on… but this display has been BGN-lite in the arrogance. Yes, your team is 15-1 and defending champs, so you have every right to be confident. However, outside of maybe three posters, the Giants are getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment around here, and after a good week of chats with the Falcon fans, it is rather jarring.

As for “who started it”, that is irrelevant. My problem is it continued (by both sides no less), and then spilled over to my domain at BBV, where I had to clean up the mess.

You "had to warn 5"?

I got a warning, which I just assumed was a general warning for the thread. If I was one of 5 APCers who got a warning for my behavior on that thread, I’m curious how many Giants fans got warnings for their behavior on that thread.

and I’m pretty sure the BBV thread blew up before APC did, so if anything spilled over it was in the BBV→APC direction.

Wiedmann is the last person to troll someone.

To be fair, the only time this shit happens on APC is when we play the Vikings, Giants, and now the Lions. I find it hilarious that the Giant fan base is calling the Packer fan base arrogant for thinking the 15-1, #1 seed in the NFL, defending Super Bowl champions is going to win this weekend againts a team that’s won 4 of their last 7 and was the last team into the playoffs.

Everytime we have played the Giants in the last 2 years you guys have come with this ridiculous cockiness. Your last 4 wins have come against romo, romo, grossman, and Ryan who has never won in the playoffs. When has any of those QBs come through at the end of the season?

In the last 2 meetings between these 2 teams the Packers have scored 83 points. Oh and one more thing…
WE BEAT YOU ALREADY THIS SEASON AND IT WAS ON YOUR FIELD!

So pardon me if I think the Packers are going to win. Don’t come over here and bitch that we don’t think the Giants are as great as you do.

Just about everyone here wanted Atlanta to win so we wouldn’t have to play the Giants. Even before the regular season ended the Giants were high up on a lot of peoples lists of teams they didn’t want to play in the playoffs. Hell, some of them were even rooting for the Cowboys to beat the Giants just in case we had to play one of them in the playoffs.

The Saints on the road are a different team. I’m a little apprehensive about what the ball control/good front 7 can do against the Packers. I know we can win a shootout against the Saints in Lambeau in January (we did it in Sept).

But then, I think of just how inept their offense is, and realize it’s tough to beat the Packers scoring only FGs.

I love defense

And haye up and down the field contests like week one Saints at Packers. I turned it off midway through the third.

I missed an exciting ending, yes, but I like it when points are at a premium. It makes every play, every first down, every TO, every trip into the red zone that much more exciting.

Up and down the field is boring as hell.

I like offense, of course, I just don’t like track meets at football games.

I also like a 3-2 type of game in baseball where two outstanding starting pitchers dual late into the game.

Again with the idea that runs are at a premium. Creating that high tension atmosphere every time someone gets on base, advances a base, a hitters count emerges, etc.

All NFL teams did it or have done it. The Pats have won three Super Bowls prior, and reeled of how many games in a row after Spygate? They’ve been the one seed in the AFC two years in a row now.

The long and storied history of the past 11-12 years has been about the New England Patriots doing unheard of things. I don’t like the Pats very much, but I think Spygate was a bunch of nonsense.

I think everyone forgets that it wasn’t Aaron Rogers who was the QB back in ‘07. And last year you were on the road the entire playoffs. So I’m wondering, is he any good when the temp dips below freezing? I don’t remember how cold it was in the NFC Championship game last year, but correct me if I’m wrong: didn’t he pass for like 50% with 2 INTs and 0 TDs. I mean he still had that potent offense last year and the Bears weren’t exactly a dominating defense if memory serves.

Colder than that on Sunday. There’s December cold and there’s the borderline “human beings should not be forced to play in this” cold. I think we’ll be leaning closer to the latter on Sunday.

OK, I admit that I'm feeling a bit under the weather today.

Could someone please show me where all of these Packer fans are saying we will win easy on Sunday? I know Delusional said so, but he’s a Lions fan, isn’t he?

And I’ve seen plenty of cases where Packers fans are confident, and have been defending our team. But I’m not seeing much of this “Packers will win easy” talk that some Giants fans seem to be seeing.

I think the Packers will win. I think they are a better team. But I don’t think it will be easy and I won’t be surprised if the Giants win.

Maybe I’m wrong, in which case when I get out of work I’ll go home, take some NyQuil and see if this tread makes more sense in the morning…

December, 7 1941 may be a day that lives in infamy, but December 6, 2011 is a day that will live in AWESOMENESS!!! The day I became part owner of the Green Bay Packers!

Not sure where they're seeing them

Maybe on Facebook Packers groups or something, where they tend to have complete homerism to the 10th degree, but that’s why I come here instead of there. Sure, confidence in your team is one thing, and no APCer here is gonna bet against the Packers, but it will be a hell of a game. The Giants defensive front four is one that has me a little nervous, as well as our defense’s ability to give up a lot of yards, but it’s gonna be a shootout between the two offenses, and whatever team makes the most mistakes is gonna be watching from the couch next week.

When life gives ya lemons, shut up and eat your damn lemons.

I have a question but no animal pictures

Sorry.

What is your OL going to look like on Sunday? Is Clifton starting? Bulaga?

I’m also wondering why Bulaga was left at RT when Clifton got hurt. Do you think the coaching staff only considers him a RT at this point?

by ct17 on Jan 11, 2012 6:31 AM CST reply actions

good question!

I’d like to piggy back on that ask about the OL in general… I know there have been a ton of injuries, is there some worry that all getting back together there might be some rust? players might tire out quicker than normal? they might not be cohesive as a unit?

I’m not trying to imply “this is why the giants will win” or anything like that… just curious if this is a concern or are the guys coming back making this a strength rather than a weakness?

by Matt dubs on Jan 11, 2012 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

OL status

might be some rust?

They had Clifton play in week 17 (he was out since week 5 with hamstring/back issues). From what I’ve read, the Packers were happy with his performance.

Bulaga didn’t play week 17, but should also be back for the playoffs. He hasn’t been out nearly as long as Clifton, though.

jsonline says

Offensive line will start with Clifton, Lang, Wells, Sitton and Bulaga —how long they play together is directly related to health (Cliffy) and performance-Marshall Newhouse is ready to play.

Other than these guys finally getting healthy, one bright spot in this situation is the Packers (and Rodgers specifically) are highly experienced in dealing with a shifting o-line situation, usually successfully.

by DaveInTucson on Jan 11, 2012 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

rust

I for one am a little worried about the offense looking rusty. Jennings playing for the first time in 5 weeks, Starks joining the offense right when Grant is getting going, the offensive line playing together for the first time since week 2… a lot of potential rust issues.

Of all of those, the offensive line is the least of my worries.

Also to be noted, these players all have a ton of reps together, so rust may not be an issue, just something to worry about.

Re: rust

The running game should be fine. Grant and Saine have both been playing well. And Starks only had 5 yards when we played the Giants in week 13, so it doesn’t seem like a deal-breaker if he doesn’t produce much on Sunday.

I’m a little more concerned about how Jennings will do, but (with the exception of the Chiefs game), Nelson, Jones, Finley, and Driver have all done an awesome job stepping up while he’s been out.

To be honest, I’m more concerned about how the defense will do. Cruz has looked like a freak of nature the last month or so. Hopefully the D can at least limit the damage.

by DaveInTucson on Jan 11, 2012 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

by rust

I mean the units as a whole. I am not concerned about Grant personally, but he put up decent numbers recently knowing that he’s the starting back. With Starks back in the mix, how does knowing that you’re not going to be on the field the entire time hurt Grant? Same thing with the wide receivers, they adjusted the last couple weeks to life without Jennings. How do the adjustments go back to their old roles, which shouldn’t be a problem unless Jennings isn’t his usual self, at what point do you bench Jennings then?

I’m just worried about that kind of stuff

Bulaga & Clifton will both be back

As far as Bulaga as RT, I think it had more to do with the strength of the run blocking on the right side (Sitton/Bulaga tandem), and not wanting to break that up. We pass enough that both Ts have to be LT-quality in pass blocking. Re-shuffling the line would be more damaging to cohesion than the benefit from having Bulaga’s pass blocking on the left side.

clifton and sitton

Clifton and Sitton missed the last NY game.

Both are pro-bowl quality. Sitton is considered our best OL right now, so having these guys back is HUGE!

This is the starting lineup in last year’s Superbowl (actually T.J. Lang replaced Colledge which is a big upgrade). Steelers led the league in sacks last year and had one sack and very few pressures on Rodgers in the SB. When they are playing well, they are very very good.

Clifton has missed 10 games or so, he has the biggest questions marks in regards to game shape.

We will see. Glad both teams are healthy going into this game.

Good for you guys

from what Blood of Eli stated, he is important part of your defense.

by Acme on Jan 11, 2012 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

he's important because of the way the packers play and the lack of experience behind him

With Terrel Thomas out for the year (ugh… that still hurts me), Ross has been our number 2 corner. After him there were about 4-5 other CBs that are now on IR, so it really is just CWeb, Ross and Prince (the reserves are guys like Will Blackmon… realistically if there were injuries we’d see 4 and 5 safeties on the field).

I’m sure you saw all the convo’s about Prince – looks talented but raw, etc etc – I know he’s going to see a lot of the field since the Packers run a lot of 3+ WR sets, but just imagine if he was the #2 corner in on every play, and guys like will blackmon were covering on the 3WR sets. It could’ve been ugly.

kind of

but you have to admit the NY d-line is way better than anything Atl had last year.

Gonzo and Turner were the only thing that seemed to worry people last year, but our defense was playing much better.

So, with the combination of NY’s better d-line than ATL’s, our defense not being as strong as last year, and Eli being better than Ole’Matty boy I can understand why NY thinks they have a chance to win this game. They do. I haven’t seen a lot of people over here saying they are flat out better, mostly saying they feel their team is good and has a chance. It gets escalated when a Packer fan states flatly that NY has zero chance of winning this game. That is just stupid, of course they have a chance.

Unless our defense figures sh*t out right now, every game we play in playoffs will be painfully close and/or losses.

by Acme on Jan 11, 2012 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

I am not saying

That the teams are similar. I am saying how the Giants players and Giants fans are handling themselves reminds me a lot of the divisional round of the playoffs last year too. Which would lead me to believe a similar result this year isn’t out of the question.

Also, other than the Falcon game, a team had a chance to beat us in their last drive last year in every playoff game. I see no reason to worry about that any more than you normally would.

in blowout fashion for 60 minutes as opposed to just regular blowout fashion? I mean, I’ll take either, of course, but your version sounds like a way worse blowout. lol, I got it

What I mean by 60 min blowout is the Giants being outplayed the whole game and getting one score in garbage time. 38-7 Packers

A regular blowout would be something like 21-13 Packers till the middle of the 3rd quarter, then the flood gates open for the rest of the game. This would suck but would not surprise me. 42-20 Packers

Both are blowouts but the second one was a decent fight for over half the game.

by BigBlueIntervention on Jan 12, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

Do you think he is that bad?

In getting some information about all pro tackles, his name popped up. Admittedly I have not seen him play that much to get a feel for how good of a player he is, so I kind of assumed that he would still be a good player a few years after.

by Shoes31 on Jan 12, 2012 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

he was an all pro as a guard a few years back. He's one of the worst OL in the league, no matter what position.

Profootballfocus asserts that he allowed a pressure one out of every ten snaps. That’s at LT. At LG, it seemed like once every snap.

In fact, I don’t believe the x-factor is our pass rush vs your OL….its our OL vs your pass rush. Our offense is extremely inconsistent…we score by going 3 and out, 3 and out, 80 yard pass play!, 70 yard pass play!, 3 and out….this is as opposed to GB and NO that can consistently score on most of their drives. Reason for that is OL play. Our tackles are disgustingly terrible….and the only way we have a chance is if they are merely bad, as opposed to putrid. I have no hopes that they can be at least serviceable.

I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

Yeah

Both Hawk and Bishop will be back for this game. Bishop is actually a pretty good blitzer, and a good run supporter. But if you see Hawk, most of the time it is because of a completion against him or a tackle after 5+ yards.

Actually, we rag on Hawk a lot but he does his job well. I think Capers uses him in a way to help free up Bishop to make more plays.

Speaking of ILB’s I heard that Herzlich missed practice. How has he played / progressed this season? And is Blackburn still your stating MLB? Don’t really know much about Blackburn, besides that he grabbed a rare INT from Rodgers.

by Shoes31 on Jan 12, 2012 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

Herzlich has been out for over a month

Has some ankle injury. He only got 1 or 2 starts at MLB. He definitely showed some ability and football smarts, but looks like a little bit of a project at MLB. I think the general feeling is that in his 3rd/4th year there’s a chance he’s a beast, but for a year or two it would be best to see him play well on special teams and learn behind a veteran. That said he’s a useful backup at this point that we had to put in due to injuries.

Blackburn has always been a fan favorite for the Giants due to his effort. He will always give everything he has on every play. He’s starting because he was with the team for long enough (past 4 or 5 seasons) that he knows the plays, where to be and can help line up the defense. Physically he’s a below average nfl player, but he’s a sound tackler and works hard enough that he wont be a liability. He actually made some really nice plays last week against the Falcons. Blackburn is kinda like a glue guy, piecing the rest together. Boley and Kiwi are the athletes in the group, both with very different strengths.
