Where Do You Expect The Vikings To Play In 2012?

Vikings stadium: Season ticket question* - NFC North Blog - ESPN. Nice catch by one of Kevin Seifert's readers. While many teams, including the Green Bay Packers, announced ticket prices last week, the Vikings have been quiet because their lease is up at the Metrodome. Are they going to play at TCF Bank Stadium or the Metrodome?

I expect it'll be the Metrodome. They don't have plans finalized for a new stadium, which is most likely to be built on or near the existing Metrodome site, so the wrecking ball shouldn't hit in 2012. I want to see the Vikings work this out, and I don't know who exactly deserves the blame, but their stadium plans continue to be poorly run.

A bit off topic

I went to the U of MN in the 1990s, when the Gophers still played in the Dome. I went to exactly one game. The venue is sterile and really doesn’t support a college football atmosphere. Moving the games off campus made them less attractive too, even with free bus rides to and from the game. I know many students felt that way too.

To be fair, the team was pretty bad back then. On the other hand, part of the reason for the move to the Dome was to attract athletes who would enjoy playing in an NFL venue. It didn’t work.

I know I'm in the minority, but, I'd love to see the ViQueens move to LA!!!

But they would have to have a kick-ass name, like:

LA Liberals

or

LA Crips

LA INKS… Oh I think that’s taken…

Help me out guys… What would be a good name for the Queens if they moved to LA?

God knows they’ll never win a SB in Minny! Lmao…

LA Vikings would be better

They already have the LA Lakers so everyone knows their names don’t have to make sense.

exactly

LA Phonies is the implied name. Nothing says it better than having a name that means nothing in that location. I’m looking forward to the logo lacking anything Viking related, and instead having stylizid lettering Althea a yellow football in the middle.

Viking are an NFC North team

and need to stay that way.
All the distasteful rivalry shit has been built over the majority of our lifetimes.
Try not to let the rivalry frustrations and dislike get in the way of what is right. They are the Minnesota Vikings and need to stay that way.
Unfortunately, it looks like politics and short-sighted thinking will push them away.
I support the Vikings efforts to get a real field and stadium.

I support their right for a new stadium if they can afford it... Why burden tax payers?

If they can’t support their own team enough to get a stadium built, why shouldn’t they move to where one will/can be built?

I’m not saying that LA would support them any more than MN does… But, it appears at least the real estate developers in LA are going to get a stadium built sooner or later…

It will be interesting to see if MN steps up and support the Queens or not…

If they move to LA, it’ll be interesting to see how they are welcomed? Just my opinion…

The thing is...

The Gophers don’t want the Vikings in TCF and the Vikings don’t want to be there. I cannont see them playing there. The Vikings would make essentially nothing on parking, food, etc. and the they would have to pay to renovate it. Not to mention they want to add like 15,000 seats to the stadium, which essentially ruins it for the Gophers. What’s the best way to limit the amount of Iowa/Wisconsin fans from invading the Bank while the team is still in the midst of a 40 year transition phase? Keep the seats to 45,000. As a season ticket holder, I can’t tell you how nice it is to have the stadium be nice and quiet when the Badgers come to town. Not to mention the Vikings would need to get the permits to sell liquor there, which would raise questions to why the Gophers won’t sell liquor, and I don’t think the U wants to go fight that battle all over again.

If they build it in Arden Hills, they can build a little mini Viking land that will be used for approximately 8 or 9 days a year. I really do think they will have trouble sustaining development around there. Maybe if the stadium attracted more houses to be built there, it won’t be very hard, but I don’t see that happening. Their only real leverage for a new stadium is that it will open the state up to major events like the Final Four and the Super Bowl, like the Metrodome did. However they seem to not be taking in that Arden Hills will be 15 minutes away from downtown, which was the advantage the Metrodome had in obtaining those events. You can go to a game at the stadium and you’re a few blocks from the bars and nightlife. Why do you think Indy got the Super Bowl this year?

It will be built and it will be built right next to the Metrodome, just like other cities have done, and build 75% of the stadium then tear down the Metrodome and finish it in the offseason.

Arden Hills

I think the allure of living near a major attraction would be pretty great…PLUS it would be a TON of new homes in an area that doesn’t really get new home development very much (right now development is about 3-4 rings out from Minneapolis and this is 1-2 ring area. Most of the homes in the area were built in the 70s-early 80s so this area of development really could be in demand. I think the property all around there would go up in value quite a bit as the roads would be improved, dining options would improve, etc.

Indy got the Super Bowl because it was agreed upon when they came up with their development. It wasn’t about the location, it was about an agreement to get the new stadium in place. Have you noticed these days that new domed stadiums, even in colder climates, get Super Bowls (Indy and Detroit). The NFL likes to reward teams and cities for working out new beautiful stadiums.

The land next to the Dome won’t work. The cost to move the Xcel facilities would be HUGE and could lead to a huge disruption in power throughout downtown, its too risky.

I think the Arden Hills site

is going to cost significantly more than any projection you or I have seen. The cleanup cost of that old munitions site alone will be huge. I guarantee you when cleanup begins there will be “unexpected” findings that crop up leading to big cost overruns. I’m not a big fan of having to build a whole transportation network accomodate the Arden Hills site including large multilane highways and light rail. You already have 2 major expressways that run right alongside the Twins site which run N,S,E and W, plus you already have light rail in place. Seems like a colossal waste of money to build in Arden Hills. The only big argument I’ve heard against the west downtown/Twins site is that the Basilica is worried about gameday noise/parking and the Basilica seems to carry a lot of political weight.

I've watched

the stadium debate unfold and fold back up many times here and I’ve just lived here for 12 years. The taxpayers here are very reasonable and sensible. They don’t want to foot the majority of the bill (especially in these economic times) so the Wilf family can turn their healthy profit. Makes complete sense. The fan base cannot hang its hat on restoring the glory since the franchise is littered with playoff failures.

Agree that the Gophers do not want the Vikings in TCF and vice versa. When the Lambeau expansion is complete it will have very close to double the seating capacity of TCF. The Vikings will take a significant hit financially over the period of time they would play in TCF which, by most estimates would be 3 seasons.

The Wilfs are sold on the fact that if they build Viking World in Arden Hills, complete with a retail and entertainment complex/venue, it will become a year round destination. This is obviously a way for the Wilf family to line their pockets with more $. Its a very short sighted approach and would likely fail miserably based on location alone.

The optimal site for the new stadium would be the West bottoms just a stones throw south and west of Target Field where the Twins play. All of the transportation and parking infrastructure is present and they would have space to establish a true tailgating atmosphere. Building at or near the current Mall of America Field/Metrodome site again locks the team into that sterile confined urban environment, which is probably one of the worst places to tailgate in the country. I refuse to take my kids to a game in that current hellhole with pumped in crowd noise. We make the trek twice a year to Lambeau. We’re so fortunate to have the stock sale option where people who want to support the team can give the Packers a huge financial boost when they need it.

Is their talk about how much of the state would be hit by a tax?

Just curious because I’ll be moving to Rochester this summer.

I think the best two options are Arden Hills and the site near the Twins…but amazingly the legislature isn’t quite smart enough to figure out how to make a compromise and come up with a way to make either one work. The dome site makes no sense to me…they just don’t’ want to see the businesses in that area go down and lose that part of downtown to irrelevance.

by TrevorR on Feb 12, 2012 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Sounds like

the majority of the tax (if not all) would be footed by twin cities metro residents since they would be the “beneficiaries” of the projected economic spoils of having the stadium in their county. The Arden Hills site would be footed more by Ramsey County. The current Metrodome/MOA Field site would place the burden on Hennepin Co. There are rumblings of other means to raise funds since the tax burden has failed in its last several attempts. Those ideas range from establishment of pull tabs/ gambling, racino/betting tracks or even an added restuarant tax on food/ beverages. Doubtful you would notice any significant impact in Rochester.

Needless to say, anything could happen in the current climate. There is probably stronger legislative support for the Vikings to stay this time around since they are backed up to the deadline of the Metrodome lease and the impetous for LA getting a team is stronger than it has been in a long time. Would not surprise me either way if the team stays or goes. Even though I don’t attend games here, I would like to see them stay here in the NFC North in MN, if for no other reason than to keep the continuity of the division and reduce the travel time of GB’s away games ( although I would never let my friends and neighbors hear the end of it, if they moved).

The Vikings historically are a good enough team to give their fans hope

and then later crush their dreams in a crystallized moment of fail. I don’t see any reason for that to change.

And, if they haven’t bottomed out*, yet, then even early leads to blow could be few and far between for a whule.
