Green Bay Packers news | Balancing act: Can a community's team survive in a corporate league? | Green Bay Press Gazette. This is a very good article on the Green Bay Packers corporate culture. The team has been growing over the past 15 years, from around 150 to 600 employees and $82 million to $282 million in revenue. And there have been a couple of recent events that might have changed some things.
First, "the Packers recently broached the possibility of taking over the [Packers] Hall [of Fame]" and second the resignation of VP Jason Wied. Wied was the only member of the Packers' front office with a lifetime connection to Green Bay, and he might have clashed with VP Tom Connolly, who was hired in 2010 after using an executive search firm.
That's interesting to know, but as a fan, I've never wondered too much about what goes on behind the scenes in the front office. Until I started writing a blog about the Green Bay Packers, I wouldn't have known much more than the names of the team's President and GM. I don't know what it would take for those problems to spill out onto the field. Even when times were tough in the 1980s, the problems always seemed to come from the coaches on the field and not the executives in the front office.
If there really is a change in the team's culture, that appears to be something that has happened from time to time throughout their history. Curly Lambeau resigned in 1950 after he lost an internal power struggle. Ten years later, they handed over complete control to an outsider, Vince Lombardi, who told the board of directors that he was now in charge. From John Eisenberg's That First Season:
"I want it understood: I'm in complete command here," he stated, pausing to let his words sink in. "I expect full cooperation from you. You will get full cooperation from me in return." (p. 49).
And the book is only $5.98 at Amazon? Seriously, that's a really good book and a great story. Anyway, back to the current article.
I'm not disagreeing with anything they've written, but I don't think the current situation is something that will grab the attention of most fans.
