Super Bowl Open Thread: Giants and Patriots

FOXBORO, MA - NOVEMBER 6: Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots congratulates Eli Manning #10 of the New York Giants after the New York Giants 24-20 win on November 6, 2011 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

There's not much to add about the overhyped game of the year. I would point out the detailed statistical analysis by Aaron Schatz at Football Outsiders. If you look at the stats over the course of the entire season, the Patriots are the superior team. But if you only look at the past five weeks, then the Giants are the better team. Which would confirm the conventional wisdom I've heard from several people over the past week: the Giants are peaking at the right time.

Brady’s recent mediocre post season performance unlikely to overcome 9-point deficit., continued Giants’ scoring. Giants also appear hungrier. Time for 60 Minutes?

that game probably would have beaten Atlanta, Houston, Denver, Cincy, and Pittsburgh (the way they played in Denver)

probably Detroit too, and possibly San Fran, because they wouldn’t have been able to put up nearly as many points…

The Giants were just the wrong team to play a horrendous game and have everything possible go wrong against.

There were an awful lot of wounded ducks that almost miraculously found the turf before they found the hands of a Patriots WR/DB.

We saw a lot more inept offense today than we did good defense. Just not a very well played game, in my opinion, though watching the coaches trying to out-think each other with a minute to play was pretty fun.

At least Holmgren isn’t the only coach who told his guys to let the opposing team score in a Superbowl anymore. Has anyone ever actually won an NFL game using that gambit?

Why would a Giants fan

even make this distinction?

Consider: The Giants were in the league for, and competed for, and failed to win every single one of those 13 championships won by the Packers.
Do those championships not count, just because the Giants didn’t win them?

By making this distiction, as if you think the NFL’s pre-Super Bowl history doesn’t matter, you sound just like a Steelers fan!

I know how important it is to some of the mods on this site...

… that we keep this Packers site safe for Patriots fans. I don’t know why that is precisely, but it apparently is crucial to the survival of western civilization.

Nevertheless, it needs to be said one more time that:

The Patriots haven’t won a title since they got caught cheating. They haven’t won a title since the NFL burned the evidence of their cheating before the story really broke. They haven’t won a title since the NFL issued its statement that the rules violations which necessitate a half million in fines and a forfeited first round pick somehow resulted in “no competitive advantage” to a football organization notorious for it’s obsessive search for any advantage they could find.

Anyone who believes that’s a coincidence is either incredibly naive, willfully ignorant, a Patriots fan/apologist (you know who you are), or all of the above.

I hate the preening Giants, but I’m damn happy that The Cheatriots went home empty handed tonight.

True.

I don’t believe they won the titles they won entirely because they were cheating, but I think the evidence that their cheating mattered far more than they or the NFL is willing to let on is pretty compelling at this point. And I don’t like being lied to by organizations that make a significant amount of money off me on an annual basis.

that's a ridiculous premise, correlation does not equal causation.

during that time, they’ve also continued to be one of the 3 or 4 most dominant franchises, and have won their division every year except the one in which Brady’s knee got blown up, and even then they went 11-5.

The more realistic reason why they’ve been unable to close the deal, is because the talent level of their defense has slowly eroded, which has everything to do with poor drafting and other personnel decisions, and nothing to do with Spygate. They also haven’t had a great running game since the last time they won it.

Their division has largely been awful for the better part of that same decade, except for the Jets...

… who have far more problems in the construction of their team than the Patriots do on their defense. Dominating that divsion isn’t impressive to me at all. The problem with your response is that I didn’t suggest they weren’t a well run franchise in many ways. You can do that, and you can win a lot of regular season games playing it straight. Everyone does it. So the assertion that they’ve still been successful doesn’t disprove my point, or even contradict anything I said. What I find ridiculous is the refusal to consider the possibility that the cessation of their illegal activities has played a role in their relative lack of playoff success since they got caught. But by all means, write it off as a coincidence if it makes you feel better.

Fine by me.

The entire league (except for Chicago and Detroit) are about to spend the entire offseason forgetting about the Packers. That won’t matter if we don’t get more talent in our defensive front 7 and get our back 4 to play disciplined football again, bu McCarthy has demonstrated that he’s at his most dangerous when he’s pissed off and the league forgets about him.

don't be ridiculous

Last years Super Bowl, Roddgers completed 24 passes, NINE Of them to Jordy (over 1/3) ..he had 300 yards passing, 140 of them to Jordy…that’s almost HALF…

Anyone who would give Nelson the MVP over Rodgers is a moron. Same with Nicks over Manning

Jarrett Bush is God

by PackFaninFL on Feb 5, 2012 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

yeah but the bigger reason Jordy didn't win it is because he dropped four passes

two of which would have been touchdowns, the second of which would have sealed the win.

by sheehan on Feb 6, 2012 6:52 AM CST up reply actions

Actually he dropped 3

so overestimated by 33%. Secondly, one of those big drops was negated and made up for two plays later with an even bigger 3rd down conversion.

and his production per catch was almost 50% higher than Nicks…

If you are going to claim that Manning didn’t deserve his MVP because Nicks had such monster numbers, then you have to do the same with Rodgers…drops included.

Rodgers played so much better than Eli did last night. Their numbers may have been similar, but that’s because his receivers made some amazing catches. The accuracy between XLV & XLVI is not even close.

Rodgers had more yards, more TDs, better ypa, better rating

Against a much, much better defense.

Rodgers threw for the 2nd most yards against the 2010 Steelers.
Manning threw for the 13th most yards against the 2011 Patriots (Edging out Tim Tebow x2, Mark Sanchez [only once], Tyler Palko & Matt Moore)

1. The one down the right sideline in the first quarter that probably would have been a TD

2. one going across the middle, I don’t remember the exact quarter

3. The one on second down, which was immediately followed by a catch on third down (it was the next play, not two plays later)

4. Third and goal on their final field goal drive. Fade to the corner, hit him in the hands (albeit the fingertips, but he’d probably say he should have caught it, and I would too, given that it was a soft lob of a throw).

Also, I don’t think anyone could have watched last year’s Super Bowl and not come away with the conclusion that Rodgers was far and away the MVP. The same could not have been said about Eli last night, he didn’t make anywhere near the number of amazing throws that Rodgers made last year. The only one that compares was the long one to Manningham, and in that case the catch was even more impressive.

and it’s not the first game we’ve had bad drops either, chiefs anyone?

by packermussupreme on Feb 6, 2012 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

there were drops where the ball was on target , no question

but Rodgers also had to get the ball out a lot under pressure, and the press coverage disrupted the timing of a lot of routes so that the receiver was not at the spot where the play was designed to deliver the ball.

That happened all night, so it was harder for your potent offense to establish a rhythm. So, I don’t think the drops were just a product of receiver failures. I think the pressure on the offense to force a quick release when the receiver was having to find their spot on time all night helped cause drops.

Now everyone will say Eli is in Bradys class. F*ck me
