APC Open Thread #33: Ron Dayne Thread? Why Not?

Hello, football fans, and welcome to the 24-hour APC Open Thread! Many thanks to Brandon for allowing this silliness.

There are other Open Threads around SBN. Feel free to drop by any of them.

Battle Red Blog, home of the AFC South Eternal Threads. Very welcoming group of people, with quite the mix of Colts, Texans, and the occasional Jags fan. Disgust for the Titans is extremely welcome.

Niners Nation, home of the San Francisco 49ers...

Pride of Detroit Community Open Threads. Division Rivals the Detroit Lions may be, BUT their fanbase is a good group of people. Respect them, and they should respect you. (of course, arodgb may heavily disagree in this regard)

Bleeding Green Nation's OTs.

A bit new to the game, but still there: Revenge of the Birds OTs

Canal Street Chronicles, getting in on the OT action as well

Rules of the thread:

NO POLITICS

NO RELIGION

NO THREATS

NO NAME-CALLING OTHER POSTERS ON THIS BLOG. There w ill be other people who stop by this thread. Yes, this is a Packersblog. Please refrain from trolling others, even virulent fans of rival teams. If you want a trash-talk thread (like the one we had in the Super Bowl), I can make one.

Absolutely NO SAYING YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON TO POST

Since we've had a little...issue...with people posting NSFW pictures, please keep in mind that some people might well read this thread at work. If you're going to post a picture that might be considered Not Safe For Work in any way, shape, or form, post a link to it instead of embedding it in the comment. That way, nobody gets in trouble.

Please remember that any time you spend on the APCOT's is entirely voluntary. Nobody is forcing you to be here.

If you were one of the people who rec'd the previous open thread to move it to the Recommended FanPosts section, please go back to that previous thread now and un-rec it. That way, the previous thread will move out of that section, and these won't be cluttering APC as much.

With those rules in mind, have fun.

This man so thoroughly destroyed the NCAA record books that no RB has come close to Dayne's career record, set in 1999. If his bowl stats were figured in, he'd be even higher on an already impressive list.

Dayne Train

I always felt bad for Ricky Williams that, after the rushing record went unbroken for so long, he only had one year at the top. Then I stopped feeling bad because Ron Dayne was awesome. I could watch the 1999 Rose Bowl on a loop. He was untackleable.

I think his record is going to stand for a long, long time, considering how short the lifespan of an NFL RB has become. Guys want to get into the league and make their money while they can, and reduce wear and tear on their bodies in college so they can have more salary-earning years professionally.

Recently finished Mass Effect again

Just started Mass Effect 2, need to have yet another character ready for Mass Effect 3! Just got Reckoning in the mail, so I’ll be on the XBox a lot.

Getting ready for baseball. One good thing about being a Royals fan? At least I know they won’t disappoint me as much as the Packers did! Don’t get me wrong, the Packers had a great season and I enjoyed it, plus I became an owner. But I don’t think the Royals can do anything that will be as disappointing as the playoff loss.

Yeah, nothing like a 4th quarter comeback when the final score is 21-17

or 17-14. Really shows how he can make a team an offensive juggernaut.

his point

is that the only time he is good, is at the end of games. If the score is 17-14 and it took a late comeback to get those points, Eli is more a product of the Giant’s D than he is a great QB

No doubt the Giants have a great D

And Eli certainly benefits from it. But playing in the clutch at the end of a game is kinda sorta one of the most important QB traits there is, if not the most important. By his rationale, Elway’s 4th quarter/OT drives in 1987 and Montana’s game winning drive in SB XXIII aren’t that impressive either, because they weren’t offensively explosive games.

Happy Virginian, Sconnie for life.

by wibrownguy on Feb 6, 2012 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

I don't put a whole lot of stock in when the drives happen

A TD is worth 6 points regardless of what quarter it comes in. If you are so inept through 56 minutes of play that you’ve only scored 13 offensive points & your defense has somehow kept you within striking distance, the fact that you are able to score points then isn’t impressive to me. If 19 offensive points is enough to win the game, it doesn’t matter when they are scored. Give me a QB who puts up enough points in the first 3 quarters that a “4th quarter comeback” isn’t possible any day.

13.

"Skip, once again, stop it; Be an analyst; don't be a douchebag."

by Wiedmann on Feb 6, 2012 5:05 PM CST up reply actions

no they're still impressive

being able to consistenly pull winning drives out of thin air is a very very impressive thing to do and is an important trait to have.

However, winning/scoring so many points in the first 3 quarters so you’re never trailing is an even more important skill to have.

No matter how impressive the comebacks are, the 6 points are worth the same no matter when you get them, even if they come at a not as impressive moment.

A TD is a TD

But I think the difference between scoring a TD (or putting together a field goal drive) at a time in the game when it’s nice to have vs. scoring a TD or FG at a time in the game when you need to have it is big enough to give Eli a little credit.

I'm not surprised

Eli’s a better QB than Tebow, but they both need really good defenses to have comeback wins.

Throwing a TD with less than two minutes to go:
score was 10-13 [OMG, what an amazing 4th quarter comeback!!!!!!!!]
score was 10-34 [OMG, what an amazing 4th quarter comeback?]

Both situations the QB scored 10 points throughout the course of the game, only to lead a TD drive with under 2:00 to go. The difference is the defense.

I love all the hate. Why? because to other fan bases you make zero sense. So Eli carved up your defense for 37 and 35 points this year right. Your argument is he is not a great QB because he can not score enough. Oh i see ANY QB that has a great Defense they are not that good. UMM. Of course to have a comeback you need a defense to stop the opponent. That is kind of the point. Just so you know we were last in rushing and 29th in defense this year. So our defense steps up and makes it happen hurts the QB. Your linebackers are great what happen to them?. Keep making the excuses in your mind why Eli is not that great and we will keep winning.

The Packers defense sucked this year. The list of QBs who carved up the Packers D this year is as long as Aaron Rodgers’s johnson. I’m not knocking Eli, but I do think his career accomplishments (2 SBs, 2 SB MVPs) are greater than what his talent/skills would suggest. I say good for him. But he doesn’t become one of the best QBs just because of his Super Bowl record. It doesn’t work that way.

Yes, except for somebody pointed out that Eli torched our defense so stats do play into it. The fact that we let anybody and everybody drive up and down the field on us certainly is a factor to look at. Our defense was absolute garbage this past season.

BTW – I think Eli is a lot better than people here are giving him credit for. I still think he’s got to have a couple more seasons like this year’s past for him to be elite but he’s definitely put himself into the top 10 imo.

And he has to stop these runs of moronic decisions. His 07 and ’10 seasons were just awful in that regard (20 interceptions, 7 lost fumbles in 2007 alone, and 25 INTs with 5 lost fumbles in 2010)

Generally, it's the QBs that have the poor seasons that end up missing the playoffs.

Of the 2007 NFC playoff QBs, Eli was the worst of the bunch in terms of passer rating (the passer rating equation itself, not ESPN’s bullshit metric of 2011).

Top 10? That's an APC phenomenon belief

Most analysts have him top 5, no questions asked. I mean really, who are you going to put in front of him?

For the sake of avoiding argument I can give you Brady, Brees, Rodgers …

who else? Tony Romo? Michael Vick? Cam Newton? Matt Schaub? Joe Flacco?

Quick answer: no, no, no, no, no.

I think it’s clear Eli is a better passer than Roethlisberger, but I can understand that at least it’s debatable.

No other QB in the NFL is defensible to say they’re better than Eli.

Name 9 QBs arguably better to justify the top 10 thing, and dinner is on me.

by Simms-McConkey on Feb 15, 2012 7:00 AM CST up reply actions

Eh, you can justify him not being in the top 5, unsure about the 10 (in my book)

but I’m leaning towards him being in the top 5 at the moment. Stafford had a better regular season than Eli in his first full year and he didn’t have a pair of stud receivers (though if Megatron counts for 2 stud receivers is debatable…)— call me bold, but I’ll say Stafford supplants Eli in a couple of years on the list. If Peyton returns and is healthy I’d place him above Eli as well as Big Ben. The only real reason Eli’s in the top 5/10 depending on how you look at it is the pair of rings- if he didn’t have those, no one would ever consider him to be close to elite outside of this year. Big Ben at the least has the stats to back up his own rings. There are a couple of other QBs that could potentially supplant Eli as well, but they need a lot more help to than Stafford. (Cam Newton comes to mind, maybe even Cutler who has had nothing but shit situations all career)

Point is, I personally feel like Eli’s more of a top 6 QB if peyton comes back healthy next year, and I feel like he could get supplanted by a couple of QBs in the next couple of years as well. So maybe give it a few years and the not being in the top ten is more likely.

apparently I often come across in a much ruder way than I intend.

Sorry for that. It’s a really interesting argument. Personally, I don’t think Big Ben is that great of a QB! But that’s just me. Also, I do think there’s a legit argument to say “I would take Stafford right now based on his potential, extra years, trajectory, etc…”

Here’s a factor that not many people consider — Eli won his two Superbowl MVPs with COMPLETELY different sets of receivers. I believe he makes his receivers good. With Plaxico and Toomer, they had their best years with Eli … I have to wonder if some of these receivers go elsewhere if they will have the same success.

We all wear our tinted glasses. You probably view AR as #1 and I think there’s a legit argument for that. I view Eli as top 5 and honestly, the single person I want under center down 4 with 2 minutes to go.

I just don’t see any real logical argument to put him behind Rivers, Romo, Stafford, Flacco, Newton, Ryan, Vick, et al at this point.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.

Because the voters all just said otherwise (48-2 in favor of Rodgers). Need further proof? All-Pro voting: 47.5 votes for Rodgers, 2.5 for Brees.

I made this post a while ago

don’t know if it helps. But the stat that stands out most to me is that 10% more of Brees’ passes are targeted from within 10 yards or behind the line of scrimmage. At an average of like 80% completions from that close, it’s no wonder is completion percentage was so much higher than Rodgers last season. Not to mention how much worse Brees’ down the field stats are interms of completions percentage and INTs than Rodgers. Which would make Brees, not Rodgers/Flynn the system QB (although really every QB is a system QB, you just have to fit the system). The yards and everything are explained in the post.

Vic, my dad is on the "fire Dom Capers" bandwagon. He says the scheme has been cracked and Capers is now useless. He also believes that Aaron should be traded away for a ton of players and/or draft picks because, and I quote, "just about any quarterback can come through the Packers system and play like Rodgers does." Is it time to put pops in a home or the looney bin? I think he’s finally gone off the rocker.

Just tell him they fired Capers and traded Rodgers. He won’t know the difference.

btw

Have you read the Snopes article on this whole story? They were not able to completely verify it.

by Ben T on Feb 8, 2012 3:07 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm - interesting

I’d be inclined to lean toward the “BS” side of the fence on this if “when a man walks on the moon” hadn’t become a common saying in America after Kennedy announced the moon mission in 1961. As such, I’ll go with Snopes’ “undetermined”, as well.

Thankfully, we have a game log of the 7/20/69 LAD-SFG game available, so I think we can estimate a little more closely the time of Perry’s HR. Remembering that between-inning breaks were shorter then (on the order of 30-45 seconds), let’s look at the estimated times for game action until the bottom of the third:

Top 1: Bad start for Perry, as the Dodgers batted around to start the game. 1B, 3B, GO6, BB, 1B, 1B, BB, FO7, FO9 – that’s a lot of balls in the air and a touch of wildness, to boot. I’d estimate this took at least 20 minutes to play out.
Bottom 1: Osteen goes 1-2-3 – betcha the crowd at Candlestick was hating this. K, FO9, FO4 (from Mays!) – say 5 minutes with the break.
Top 2: Perry settles in, allowing 1B, GO1, K, GO6 – I’ll bet he threw over to first to hold Maury Wills a couple of times – let’s say 7 minutes.
Bottom 2: Osteen still cruising with another quick inning: FO6, BB, 6-3GIDP. Say 6 minutes, since Jim Davenport wasn’t going anywhere.
Top 3: 1-2-3 for Perry: GO4, GO4, K. Say 5 minutes.
Bottom 3: 2 quick outs for Osteen, FO4, GO6, and then Perry goes yard. I’ll put that at about 4 minutes.

So my 47 minutes isn’t too far off from Snopes’s 45, meaning Armstrong and Aldrin were cooling their heels in the module for a full 28 minutes on the lunar surface. So when comparing moon shots, NASA’s was both launched and landed before Perry’s.

Ugh, I have a crisis, and need some input.

As I’ve mentioned before, all of my friends are Cubs fans, except for a few Cards fans in the mix. My best friend wants to go to have her birthday party at Wrigley for the Cubs-Cards game on April 25th, and then hit the bars afterward and obviously I’m going to go. My issue is this: Just who the hell do I root for, and if it’s the Cubs, do I buy a t-shirt or whatever? i mean, letting her actually see me in a Cubs shirt would probably be one of the best gifts I could give her, but still. If it’s the Cards, no way in hell do I buy any of their gear.

Baseball, you can't get here soon enough.

Win-win.

And there are plenty for sale outside Wrigley, too

As 4/25 is a day game, unless you’ll be sitting in the shade, you may want to wear a cap, and a cheap Cubs cap that you “forget” in the bathroom may be an acceptable loss if you don’t feel like paying for a t-shirt that you’ll be embarrassed to wear later.

One other possibility: Cubs fans celebrate their stadium like no other baseball fans do. You can buy any amount of Wrigley Field/Friendly Confines swag that has no mention of the Cubs anywhere on it. If anyone asks, you can say that you were there for a Cubs-[Acceptable Foe] game and some drunk threw up all over your [Acceptable Foe] t-shirt, so you bought a Wrigley shirt from one of the vendors.

But she’s the only one. That’s because when she chose OSU for her undergrad, she didn’t care at all about college sports and wasn’t aware of OSU’s success, fans, or teams. It’s not like she grew up an OSU fan and only went there for college because she was a fan.

One of the best things you can do on SBN

is think about what you’re going to say. I can’t tell you how many ranty comments I’ve thought about making, have typed out, and then deleted or closed.

If your comments are an endless flow of vitriol, no one will ever take you seriously. Nor should they, for that matter. If you mock a fellow poster nonstop while claiming to be an absolute expert, you’re just going to become a laughingstock.

It’s pretty awesome. Shepard can now jump across spaces and over things, though I am not a fan of the new vital signs graphic. One of the demo scenes involves people who hopefully lived in your previous playthroughs, including Liara, Wrex, Garrus and Mordin. it’s like an all-star game!

I’m comparing their places within the era the music comes from, and they are both fluff compared to music that was contemporary with it.

by Wiedmann on Feb 14, 2012 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

I don't like what I don't like

Paul McCartney’s appeal is broad because he took no risks whatsoever in his music-making & is the epitome of everything that’s wrong with the music industry. People with a fleeting interest in music are drawn to his bland “safe” music. His songs are as shallow as they come, and he admitted as much in “Silly Love Songs”. It’s fine for people to like him; it bothers me a little that someone with soulless pop songs like his could be famous, but it only renews my lack of faith in humanity.

I used to listen to the Beatles, but I’ve since found so much more music that is far superior it’s no longer worth my time. Whenever someone tells me their favorite band is the Beatles, my first thought is, “You haven’t heard a lot of music in your life, have you?” I listen to music & truly appreciate it for its art & substance. The Beatles are a tracing of a hand turned into a Thanksgiving turkey. Thanks, but I’ll stick to the Old Masters, Impressionists & other real artists.

Eram quod es, eris quod sum

Y’know, a lot of people don’t listen to a lot of music in their lives. Some of us do. If someone tells me that The Beatles are their favorite band, I feel glad they’ve made it that far. If they ask me what else I think they’d like, I don’t start naming off my favorite bands, but I do try to point them in a direction that’s not so terribly distant from their current tastes, but still in the spectrum of stuff I like – Big Star, say.

But I know enough about music to tell you that comparing Paul McCartney to Justin Timberlake, musicianship- and songwriting-wise, is a fool’s errand. You may believe that your tastes are so evolved that “they might as well be the same”, but the vast majority of critics and the general public utterly disagree with you.

I’ll point out just two and then leave you to your PBR: Paul McCartney was right there with Lennon and Harrison playing 2 four-hour sets a night in German nightclubs. Justin Timberlake cut his teeth in The Mickey Mouse Club. One’s an actor with a singing background and the other is a singer-songwriter with a background in smelling like a brewery in Dusseldorf. And feel free to check out Timberlake’s official songwriting and producing credits and compare them to any list of McCartney’s songwriting credits you like. Even if you slice all of the Lennon/McCartney songs 90-10 for John (which would be truly unfair to Paul, but that’s how you appear to roll), you’ll have to admit that the output by McCartney is more impressive by far.

Well, I started to write a long response to this,

but it’s just not worth it. You are entitled to your opinion, but mine is about 180 degrees from it. The Beatles and Paul McCartney, in his solo career, have made anything but “safe” music. That is such a simplistic view that seems to be informed not by a critical ear that has listened to the full catalog, but by a cynic who assumes that anything popular must be shallow and of little substance. And, while I have failed so far to appreciate his most recent CD, Paul McCartney has produced some great music in the past several years. The man is still relevant and producing art that can hang with any of the so-called “Old Masters.”

She sees me and says “Can I ask you a question?”
I walk over to her.
She holds up a copy of Adele’s “21.” “Is this the album with that one song?”
I look at her blankly for a moment, then figuring she must have watched the Grammys last night, I ask “The one they performed last night?”
Woman: “Yes.”
Me: “Yup, that’s the one.”
With relief she says “Thank you!”

Randy Edsall is a jackwagon.
In a move that came as a surprise to no one, quarterback Danny O’Brien has decided to leave Maryland and leave a trail of uncertainty in his wake.

Since Randy Edsall became the Terrapins head coach, 24 players with eligibility remaining have left the program, including 12 since the season ended. Those 12 players have taken 48 starts with them and a lot of the meager confidence Edsall had from the fanbase as the Terrapins leader.

“I’m disappointed by Danny’s decision,” coach Randy Edsall said in a statement released by the school. “Danny told me that he’s not committed to our program, that he’s not ‘all in.’ I want what’s best for all of our players. Danny wants a fresh start elsewhere. I wish him well.”

Not sure why Edsall is so disappointed. He set O’Brien’s transfer in motion against Georgia Tech back in October when he benched the 2010 starting quarterback in favor of C.J. Brown, who is now the only quarterback on the roster with any experience.

Benching O’Brien displayed a lack of confidence in a quarterback that helped lead Maryland to a 9-4 record under former coach Ralph Friedgen and earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors. And Edsall never did anything to really help O’Brien get that confidence back. In fact, he did just the opposite by telling the Washington Times in November that he should have minimized the expectations on O’Brien from the start.

But Maryland totally earned this by not retaining Friedgen after a 9-4 season. I mean, seriously, you’re Maryland. You’re not the Florida or Michigan of the ACC.

And it disputes your description of McCartney of taking “no risks whatsoever” and making “bland safe music.” I’m not sure why it would be important to point out that an insane criminal wrote his own lyrics to Paul’s song and used those lyrics as the basis for carrying out his insanity. Perhaps you can connect the dots for me.

The Little Sisters of the Poor aren't that poor when they're dealing drugs.

TCU students (including four football players) busted for drug dealing

“Last year, TCU was lauded in a ‘Sports Illustrated’ article as the only top 25 team in the nation in 2010 with no players on its roster with criminal records.”

That remains true, but only because the four players (including three starters and a former All-American) were immediately expelled.

Ron Dayne dominates the majority of the team rushing records.
Lee Evans has most of the receiving records.
The passing records are a mixed bag mostly between Wilson and Bevell.
But an interesting one that I found was the record for most points scored in a game. It is 30, tied by five different players, none of whom are either Ron Dayne or Montee Ball. Brian Calhoun accomplished the feat twice in 2005.

Bruce Weber...
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP)—Illinois coach Bruce Weber said Friday that he hopes to finish his career with the Illini after a week that saw him criticize both himself and his players before apologizing for being frustrated.

The ninth-year head coach said his players took the right message away from his harsh critique: They need to play tougher.

"I love Illinois, I’ve said it many times," Weber said. "I love to be the coach here. I want to finish my career here.

Oh, I’m afraid it is VERY possible for you to finish your career at Illinois. As in: This season, if you don’t pull Illinois hoops out of the death spiral they’re currently on by losing 7 of 8 games.

Got an offer for Konz from the 49ers

Their first and 4th for him, but I declined it. Not enough value for him and still doesn’t solve the problems of lack of 1st round prospects left.

To be honest, besides Miller and Wilson im not looking at RB’s until the 4th or 5th round at the earliest. The problem I have with Worthy is that I don’t see him as a 34 DE holding two gaps. He would be effective on 3rd down, but he won’t be able to help us in the run.

Trade made with Seahawks

Branch was good value in my mind there. And with drafting Konz earlier, we can spend some money on a FA DE with the savings from Wells.

Quite a few good 34 DE’s left in the later rounds too. What do you all think?

I highly doubt he wins the Heisman but if Meyer surrounds him with some playmakers he could be really good. He wasn’t so scary in Ohio St.‘s pro style offense but he probably will be in Meyer’s spread offense.

Don’t think the last quote you bolded is all that out there. Wisconsin lost a lot on the offensive line and who knows who, and how our new QB will be. If he’s anything like most of the guys Bielema brings in though, he’ll probably be pretty limited. And Michigan St. lost quite a few big time guys. Michigan and Nebraska will probably be pretty tough but nothing too crazy.

What’d you guys think about Bielema and Dantoni’s comments about the “code” among Big 10 coaches?

by packallday555 on Feb 18, 2012 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

I see Miller as a shorter, more agile Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor could run like the wind once he got to full speed, as well as absorb contact like few other QBs. Miller’s physique is much better suited to the agile little Troy Smith plays that made Ohio State’s offense a virtual death machine in 2005-06. If he develops into the kind of passer Smith was by 2006, he could win a Heisman…but it won’t be this year. Teams on probation might get players hyped for Heisman, but they won’t win it.

With that being said, Ohio State is losing its best center since Nick Mangold and their offensive line was a complete disaster over the past few years. They have to restructure the OL, replace their most effective RB (Herron exhausted his eligibility), and find a competent WR (Posey was about as good as it got in that department, and he played 5 games). They do have a good TE (Stoneburner), but the fact is that Ohio State’s leading receiver a year ago had 14 receptions. That’s not a good number over 5 games, let alone the 13 that Ohio State played in 2011.

Urban Meyer might have gotten one of the better recruiting classes in the nation. However, 5-star kids don’t always pan out (see Florida’s entire DL unit in 2010) and rarely do they provide an instant impact. It might take them until their junior year before they live up to the hype. Add in tougher road trips than last year in Madison, State College, and East Lansing, and I see 3 extremely possible losses for Meyer’s first team. If Hoke can finally get Michigan to show up in Columbus (something that hasn’t happened since John Cooper’s final season, 2000), you could have a 4th loss.

That’s the thing though, he won’t have to be a good passer in Meyer’s offense. Look at Tebow in Meyer’s heyday at Florida. He just put a bunch of speed around Tebow, and ran that multiple option offense, and when he actually did pass, most of the time his guy was wide open.

Defensively, Ohio St. is going to be good — maybe the best in the Big Ten. They return almost everybody, and added the two best DE prospects I think.

They might not go undefeated but I think they’ve got just a good a shot of doing so as anybody else in the Big 10. Wisconsin’s got question marks, Michigan St. lost a few of their best players, and Penn St. isn’t anything special.

by packallday555 on Feb 19, 2012 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

Ohio State's D wasn't that special last year.

Top-20, yes, but the Ohio State D gave up a billion points to Michigan (a game in which any semblance of a defense evaporated at times), blew a 12-point lead in roughly 5 minutes against Wisconsin (getting bailed out by Shelton Johnson being an idiot at the end), and they gave up 255 yards on 22 plays against Nebraska (all on Nebraska’s 4 scoring drives on a 28-0 run that gave the Cornhuskers the lead at the end). Compared to the 06-07 Ds (which got Ohio State a 23-3 record and a pair of title game appearances) and the 2010 D (a 12-1 season with 12 vacated wins), the 2011 D was almost pathetic.

They were solid last season — top 20 like you said. And I believe they’re only losing 1-2 guys. Plus, they’re adding some big time recruits.

And as much as you guys are ripping Miller, he was pretty good last season considering he was a true freshman. He should only improve, especially in whatever Meyer’s offense which will probably suit him better than that pro style offense did. I’d expect them to utilize his running more, and it’ll probably help their offense more.

I think you’re concentrating too much on Ohio St. and not enough on all the other teams that will also contend for the title. Wisconsin is losing like half of their offense, and we know the defense is going to be pretty mediocre. Michigan St. is losing their Cousins, Cunningham, Martin, and Worthy — that’s gonna hurt them a lot. Nebraska is losing a lot on defense, and Martinez just doesn’t impress me that much. I haven’t thought much of Penn St. for a couple years now, and their situation is only going to get worse with everything that went down.

I think Michigan probably has got to be the favorite but there just isn’t that much disparity between the top teams. I hate Ohio St. as much as the next guy but I don’t doubt for a second that Meyer will have them consistently being one of the top teams in the nation at some point.

I just implied that the guys who barely qualifies as a QB should probably not be looked at as a Heisman favorite just yet.

I'm not sold on a 6-7 team at all.

OL losses are something that Wisconsin can and will play through. QB remains to be determined, but Wisconsin has a pretty favorable home schedule next season and should take advantage of it. The DL, if anything, could improve, and Taylor/Borland is one of the best LB duos in the conference. Fenelus’s loss can and will hurt, and sadly, with Aaron Henry graduating, our most experienced safety is now… (gulp) Shelton Johnson. I don’t think Wisconsin’s D will be as decidedly average as it was last year (I know the special teams were all kinds of atrocious). I’d also expect one of Wisconsin’s road trips to end up a rude surprise (either at Nebraska or at Purdue).

As far as Ohio State’s O…it’s not going to be an easy transition. They’ve been recruiting players for smashmouth running attacks for a while now, and with Urban, they have to change to a run-based option spread. But they’re not the true triple option like GT, and they’ll need to establish some sort of passing game. It’ll be a challenge with the lack of receiving options.

Hang on.

Are you trying to tell me you think there is a shot in purple-fuck hell that Ohio State goes UNDEFEATED?

Man, I hope I don't go to that hell.

I already told you! I deal with the god damn receivers so the linebackers don’t have to! I have coverage skills; I’m good at covering people! Can’t you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?!

It would be so painfully pointless, too.

So

Pre-ordered Mass Effect 3 for the 360 yesterday. Played the demo and some multiplayer today. Not sure I like how they went with the story, it doesn’t seem realistic from what you can piece together in the demo. Guess I have to wait until the game comes out to get a real conclusion. Multiplayer seems very interesting though.

What he doesn't realize

Is that the number 4, in China, is equivalent to the number 13 in the US … an unlucky number. It may have something to do with the fact that the words for “Four” and “Death” sound very similar in Chinese.

Well, that's Lin's actual jersey from HS.

I would imagine that Lin, being of Taiwanese ancestry, would probably be aware of the fact that 4 is “bad luck”, especially since he wore #4 in HS. In fact, Lin wore #4 at Harvard as well. So it’s not like Spike will be bringing Lin bad luck by wearing a #4 jersey with Lin’s name on it.

Or are you referring to Spike possibly bringing himself bad luck?

Yep.

That could also explain the Omega-4 Relay in Mass Effect 2.
