Some of you may be familiar with Roy F. Baumeister's study on preschoolers, identifying and tracking "restrainers" and "indulgers". If not, here's a video that explains the whole concept.
With free agency upon us, I believe a lot can be learned from these 4-year-old children.
Those who choose short-term gratification over long-term prosperity could be labeled "Indulgers" (Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, Zygi Wilf, etc.). Look where it gets them - winning the "marshmallow" (the "Free Agency Super Bowl"), while sacrificing the future.
Now, we have the ultimate "Restrainer" in Ted Thompson. He stubbornly will not eat that free agency marshmallow, knowing that the future of the franchise will otherwise suffer. Look where it gets him.
Fans who clamor for the big name free agent often don't realize that, by patching up a hole on the roster with a quick fix, the team springs multiple leaks down the road with salary cap issues and releasing important players.
So what would you do if you were a GM? How would you run the team, if given control of the Packers? Would you tend to be more of a Restrainer or an Indulger?
