As the NFL Draft gets closer, now-former Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant does not have a contract with the Packers or any other team. Grant has been a solid performer and will almost certainly get a shot to make a roster somewhere. I fully expect him to make an NFL roster and get a decent workload as a backup with someone in the 2012 season. That someone will not be the Green Bay Packers.
Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette spoke with his agent, Alan Herman. When asked whether or not Grant was in talks with any teams, Herman had this to say:
"There's some things actually going on with Ryan, but not with Green Bay."
And when he was asked if Grant's best possibility to play next year was with a team other than the Packers:
"That's a strong possibility, more than a strong possibility. It could be as early as next week."
We already knew that the Packers and their coaching staff had faith in James Starks, but this is a strong indicator to me that they also have faith in the rehabilitation and subsequent progression of Alex Green. Expect the Packers to use a late-round pick on a running back, and expect Grant to sign with a different team shortly, perhaps even before the NFL Draft.
