On June 18, the Packers and Bears will go head-to-head in the only sport that matters more to me than football. No, I'm not talking about lingerie football -- I'm talking about golf! The 2012 Ryder Cup (you know, USA vs. Europe) will be contested this year at Medinah Country Club just outside of Chicago. But about three months before the professionals tee it up, the Packers and Bears will contest the "Rivalry Cup" at the same course. More specifically, there will be a team of eight on each side made up of current and past players. Net proceeds will benefit Bears Care and the Green Bay Packers Foundation. Bragging rights could benefit all of us.
Too bad the Packers cannot put this guy on the team as a ringer. (For the uninitiated, this is Mark Wilson -- a professional golfer from Chicago who is a big fan of the Green and Gold.)
Here is the anticipated line-up so far (which I lifted from this SB Nation article by Adam Fonseca):
Kevin Butler, Super Bowl XX kicker and Bears all-time scoring leader
Richard Dent, Hall of Fame Defensive End and Super Bowl XX MVP
Mike Ditka, Hall of Fame Tight End and Super Bowl XX head coach
Robbie Gould, Pro Bowl kicker and Bears all-time leader in field goal accuracy
Patrick Mannelly, long snapper and longest tenured Bear in team history
Adam Podlesh, first punter in team history to net over 40 yards a punt in a season
Green Bay Packers:
Mason Crosby, NFL record-holder for the most points (649) by a player within his first five seasons in the league
Lynn Dickey, quarterback held the franchise all-time single season record for passing yards from 1983-2011 (broken by Aaron Rodgers)
John Kuhn, standout fullback voted a Pro Bowl starter and earned second-team All-Pro honors from The Associated Press in 2011
Tim Masthay, ascending punter set franchise records for both gross and net average during the 2011 season
Bill Schroeder, wide receiver who led all NFC players in yards per reception in 2001; member of Super Bowl XXXI winning team
Ryan Taylor, finished second among the club’s rookies with both 15 games played and 10 coverage tackles in 2011
Randy Wright, quarterback ranks sixth in Packers' history with 7,106 passing yards; started every game for Green Bay in 1986
I really need one of these!
