I'm not going to go as far as Bob McGinn did and suggest, ""Packers would be wise to deal Jennings"... but, I will say that a few things need to be decided... (Thank God I do not have to make those decisions! : )
1) Are we going to extend Greg Jennings?
2) If we are not going to extend Greg Jennings, are we going to Trade him, or let him walk?
GM Ted Thompson isn't prone to trading away his "Star" players. His track record is more along the lines of letting Greg Jennings play out the rest of this year, and letting him walk at the end of the year. Looking at our "Cap Space" and the talented group of young players that are going to need to be taken care of, I agree with Bob McGinn, that it'll be very difficult, if not impossible to pay Greg Jennings "Fair Market Value."
Since #85 will be 29 years old next week, it's unlikely we could or would get a 1st round pick for him, if indeed TT were to trade him to a WR starved team, but a 2nd round pick would be the minimum for a star Packer of Jennings character...
Personally, I expect Greg Jennings to be on our roster come Halloween, which means TT didn't trade him. TT will probably take the 3rd round compensatory pick issued for 2014 and continue building our roster. But...
What if? What if the St. Louis Rams come calling? The Rams have 2 first round picks next year. What if Coach Jeff Fisher and OC Brian Shottenheimer decide that they need a veteran presence like #85 in their locker room and offer TT their extra 1st round pick for him?
Or... What if Coach Joe Philbin and OC Mike Sherman and the Miami Dolphins, who have extra picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, & 7th rounds in the 2013 draft, dial up TT and offer him a 2nd and a 6th?
If I were the GM, I believe I'd be very hard pressed not to make a deal if an offer like that came across my desk... Especially if they were the ones calling! If and when the deals done, TT will have to have a plan come April to replace #85...
In 2006, Green Bay Packer's WR Greg Jennings was the second of two second-round draft choices by Green Bay (52nd overall), a pick obtained in a draft-day trade down of 16 spots with the Patriots. The fourth WR selected, behind Pittsburgh’s Holmes (25th), New England’s Jackson (36th) and the N.Y. Giants’ Moss (44th). ( Per Packers.com )
Currently via CBS SPORTS there are 4 WR's projected to go in round one... I would be surprised if 4 WR's went in the 1st round... But, then again, it all depends on the crop of WR's...
In 2006, there was 1 WR taken in the 1st round ~ Santonio Holmes - Pittsburg Steelers
In 2007, there were 6 WR's taken in the 1st round ~
2nd overall Calvin Johnson - Detroit Lions
9th overall Ted Ginn Jr. - Miami Dolphins
23rd overall Dwayne Bowe - Kansas City Chiefs
27th overall Robert Meachem - New Orleans Saints
30th overall Craig Davis - San Diego Chargers
32nd overall Anthony Gonzalez - Indianapolis Colts
In 2008, there wasn't a WR taken in the 1st round, but, 10 WR's taken in the 2nd round...
In 2009, there were 6 WR's taken in the 1st round. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, & Kenny Britt.
In 2010, there were 2 WR's taken in the 1st round. Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant.
In 2011, there were 3 WR's taken in the 1st round. AJ Green, Julio Jones, and Jonathan Baldwin.
In 2012, there were 4 WR's taken in the 1st round. Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd, Kendall Wright, & AJ Jenkins.
In my opinion, it's a little early to be projecting our draft picks for 2013, but, if I had to pick my perfect scenario, I hope the Rams come calling and the Packers wind up drafting Justin Hunter, WR out of Tennessee, 6'4" 200 lbs. 4.49 40... Or if the Dophins win the bidding war, I'd like to see Terrance Williams out of Baylor, 6' 2" 205lbs. 4.49 40...
Personally, I don't want to say goodbye to #85, but, if TT wants CM3, Raji, & Rodgers on the Packers roster in the future, I just don't see how TT can pay Jennings what he'll command on the open market... I know... I know...
If if's and but's were Candy & Nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas... There is also nothing that says if TT chooses to trade Greg Jennings that he has to use that pick to draft his replacement... But, if TT were to trade Jennings, and we did get a high pick for him, as it stands right now, what position do you think we should use that pick on?
WR, O-Line, RB, S, D-Line? Just curious what you guys... (& Dolls) think?
Go Pack Go!!!
