Packers Promote Jake Stoneburner to Active Roster, According to Teammates

USA TODAY Sports

Based on tweets from Packers players, the team will soon add a player from its practice squad to the roster.

If the Packers are going to field a full team on Sunday against the Browns, they're going to need a few extra bodies contributing in the passing game. With Randall Cobb out and James Jones a question mark, speculation abounds that the team is looking at adding free agent wide receivers or players from other teams' practice squads (especially after the whole Tavarres King news yesterday), but it appears that one answer is going to come from within the organization.

Based on tweets from current Packer players, it sounds like practice squad tight end Jake Stoneburner is getting promoted to the active roster:

Stoneburner has also retweeted several of his former Ohio State teammates congratulating him on his promotion. So while no news has been announced by the Packers as yet, it seems clear that Stoneburner is getting called up.

It is important to note, however, that Stoneburner played wide receiver for his final year at Ohio State, and was most definitely looked at as a receiving tight end rather than a blocker. He could be split out wide in multiple-receiver formations, and has a big frame that will be a challenge for smaller cornerbacks to defend.

When there is a corresponding move to open up a spot on the 53-man roster, we will bring it to you as soon as possible.

UPDATE: We have confirmation from ESPN's Rob Demovsky that Stoneburner has indeed been promoted.
