Packers Re-Sign QB Matt Flynn

According to multiple reports, the Packers have re-signed quarterback Matt Flynn.

With quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Seneca Wallace unavailable for at least this weekend, the Packers were forced to make a roster move. Fortunately for Green Bay, a familiar face was available in free agency.

According to multiple reports, the Packers have re-signed quarterback Matt Flynn.

Flynn's return to Green Bay comes nearly two years after he last appeared in a green and gold uniform. Many fans remember fondly his 480-yard, six-touchdown performance against the Lions during the final week of the 2011 season. It was largely that game that catapulted Flynn into a free agency bidding war that culminated in a three-year $26 million contract with the Seahawks.

Shortly thereafter, Flynn lost a preseason position battle with soon-to-be superstar Russell Wilson, and his troubles snowballed from there. Flynn's spent part of this season in Oakland and Buffalo, and there's been growing concerns about his elbow.

Apparently the performance and medical concerns weren't enough to deter the Packers, who certainly value Flynn's familiarity with their offensive scheme. Flynn will likely go into this weekend's game as the number two quarterback to Scott Tolzien.

The only question left is what corresponding roster move the Packers will make to create a spot for Flynn. The most obvious choice would be to place Wallace on the injured reserve, as not only is he unlikely to play this week, but keeping him would give the Packers four quarterbacks on the 53. Another possibility assuming their injuries are serious enough would be to place Evan Dietrich-Smith or Don Barclay on IR.

In any event, the Packers will have their new backup quarterback when they travel to New York this Sunday. Needless to say, a Rodgers-Flynn photobombing is imminent.
