Scott Tolzien Will Start for Packers against Vikings, Says Mike McCarthy

The Packers' head coach reiterated on Monday that Scott Tolzien will continue to start in Aaron Rodgers' absence, despite throwing three interceptions against the Giants.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy took the podium to discuss the team's loss to the New York Giants on Sunday and to look ahead to the next game against the Minnesota Vikings. Before saying anything else, McCarthy made it clear that Scott Tolzien will remain the starting quarterback this week.

Though he did throw three interceptions, Tolzien had good numbers otherwise - he went 24/34 for 70.6% completions, and racked up 339 yards for just under 10 yards per attempt. Furthermore, he was not sacked the whole game long. McCarthy said he was impressed by Tolzien's play on the long passes, and that he had never seen a game where a quarterback was able to complete every long throw that they called from the sideline.

McCarthy then said that he has no news on Aaron Rodgers' injury, and that he has not yet talked to the medical staff about Rodgers' collarbone or his potential availability for the Vikings game.

Speaking of that game, McCarthy referred to it as an "extremely important football game", which cannot be overstated.

He sounded positive when discussing Derek Sherrod's progress in practice this week as well, saying that the young tackle made a big step in Thursday's session. With Marshall Newhouse's continued struggles and Don Barclay's injury keeping him out on Sunday, it would be great if Sherrod could step in and contribute at right tackle in the next few weeks.

As usual, practice on Wednesday will go a long way towards determining the active roster for Sunday's Vikings game.
