Well, that was awful. Now that the mind-numbing effects of L-tryptophan and alcohol have worn off, the true ugliness of the Packers'… hmm, let's see, what word is most appropriate… I'm gonna go with "disemboweling" by the Lions becomes that much more clear, and the harsh truth sinks in.
The team that we love… sucks.
But rather than drown my sorrows in another bottle of adult beverage, I'm going to honor this day…
I am thankful for my family (even my Lions fan brother-in-law) with whom I was able to watch the game, and friends to commiserate with. Many are alone.
I am thankful for a day of feasting and celebrating abundance. Many struggle to merely scrape by.
I am thankful for living in a country that considers gratefulness worthy of a national holiday, regardless of Whom each of us individually chooses to thank, or not. Many live without such freedom.
I am thankful that my life is so secure that my favorite sports team losing seems catastrophic. Many are picking up the pieces of a life disrupted by war or natural disaster.
And finally, I am thankful for four Lombardi trophies, and memories of the joy of watching them be won. Many have only seen futility.
For all of these things, and many other blessings besides, I am thankful today.
