McCarthy Presser 11/8: Clay Matthews is probable for Sunday

Thearon W. Henderson

The Packers may be without Aaron Rodgers this Sunday against the Eagles, but Clay Matthews is set to return.

After weeks enduring slow but seemingly inevitable attrition, the Packers are finally returning some of their star players. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy provided the team's injury report, and discussed this weekend's opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Clay Matthews is set to return from a broken thumb that held him out of action the past four weeks. As has been speculated all week, he'll suit up with a clubbed right hand, which will make wrapping up a challenge. Perhaps more importantly, McCarthy said Matthews' snap count will be closely monitored. Regardless, Matthews is the one true field-tilter on the Packers' defense, and even at 85% he's a difference maker.

Matthews' running mate Nick Perry may also return against the Eagles. Perry was just hitting his stride -- three sacks and two forced fumbles over his last two games -- when a broken foot sidelined him after the Baltimore game. If both of the Packers' best outside linebackers can play on Sunday, it'll help keep Nick Foles in check and aid the secondary.

In a surprise, guard T.J. Lang was a limited participant in practice today. Lang endured a concussion less than 90 hours ago, which makes his participation either puzzling or encouraging depending on your perspective. The Packers are required to keep players off the practice field until they clear concussion protocol, so he must have registered some progress. Lang is official questionable for Sunday.

McCarthy also spoke at length about Aaron Rodgers and the team's adjustment to playing without him. The team hasn't performed any tests on Rodgers' shoulder since Tuesday which was when the fractured collarbone was first diagnosed. Accordingly, there is still no official timeline for a return. McCarthy reiterated his trust in backup Seneca Wallace, of whom he described as "look[ing] a lot better. Prideful individual, continues to work on things." Wallace played very poorly in his Packers debut, but a week of practice with the starting unit should remedy some of his problems.

That does it for McCarthy. Keep your internet machines tuned to Acme Packing Company for the latest Packers news and developments.
