Draft season is almost upon us, so it is a good time to assess the state of the Packers' roster. So far, we've tackled the defensive line & linebackers. Let's finish off the defense with the remaining players, the DBs. Here is a list of players the team has under contract:
CB Tramon Williams (30Nov10: 5yr/$38.148 mil [$6 mil signing]) FA: '15
2013: $5.9 mil (+$300k roster)
2014: $6.9 mil (+$300k roster)
CB Sam Shields ('13: 2nd Round RFA Tender) FA: '14
2013: $2.023 mil
CB Casey Hayward (11May12: 4yr/$3.3 mil [$847k signing]) FA: '16
CB Davon House (29Jul11: 4yr/$2.341 mil [$300,580 signing]) FA: '15

DB Jarrett Bush (20Mar12: 3yr/$5.25 mil [$1 mil signing; $1 mil incentives])
2013: $1.35 mil (+$100k workout)
2014: $1.6 mil (+$100k workout)
Hayward flashed as a rookie, and looks to take on more responsibility in the coming seasons. Shields was arguably the best DB on the team last year. Tramon has some questions since regressing, but hopefully his struggles are related to a shoulder injury. Once fully healthy, perhaps he can regain his form. If not, he may become a salary cap casualty. The only player not on a multi-year deal is Shields, and that may even be rectified by the start of the season. Optimally, another team will offer a reasonable long term offer sheet, which the Packers match. Throw in an extra handful of young talent with potential, and it's clear the CB future in GB is bright.
S is a bit more of a question mark. The best of the bunch, Morgan Burnett, is in the final year of his rookie deal, and has been more solid than spectacular. McMillian, last year's 4th round pick, is currently penciled in on the other side, and is expected to further develop. Jennings has performed admirably in spot duty & looks to be solid depth. Richardson is an interesting prospect, who looks to compete for a roster spot.
Draft priority (CB): Low
You can never have enough quality CB, however, it's difficult to see a scenario where a CB gets taken early.
Draft priority (S): Moderate
With the uncertainty surrounding Burnett's contract & others' development, look for a pick day 3 or even late on day 2.
Potential mid-late round picks: DJ Swearinger, Robert Lester, Josh Evans, Zeke Motta, Sanders Commings, Micah Hyde, JJ Wilcox, Duke Williams, Cooper Taylor
Potential FA targets still on the market: CB Jason Allen*, CB Chris Gamble*, CB Terrence McGee*, FS Kerry Rhodes*, FS Eric Smith*, SS Cedric Griffin, FS Sherrod Martin, FS Quintin Mikell, FS Gerald Sensabaugh, FS Madieu Williams
*released; will not count against us for compensatory picks if signed
