Lets analyze the Pack's defense. I argue that one player can make the difference on this team. That one player could already be on the team or it could be someone who is added this year. In order to evaluate this we need to look at why I would suggest such a thing that the Pack are one player away from a strong defense. Here we go.
To those who suggest there are holes all over the team, it is being ignored that players do not play in a vacuum. What do I mean by this? I mean that the Defensive Backs depend on the Defensive Line and they depend on the Linebackers who also depend on the Defensive Line and the Defensive Backs.
A few years ago the Pack let Cullen Jenkins go in free agency. While I can understand the argument that this was a mistake, I do not agree. At that time, Jenkins was playing, at best, 12 games out of 16 per year. Though he was very effective, I think the argument was that Jenkins wasn't worth the money he was going to be paid to be a partial starter. At any rate, what I'm saying is that Jenkins was a fantastic pass rusher but the team had to move forward. Mike Neal got injured and wasn't able to replace Jenkins the following year.
All this being said, lets take a look at what could make a significant impact on the defense. The popular argument would be that we need a Safety or a Cornerback because of the number of yards given up passing. I would argue that the biggest impact would be on the defensive line. If we had another defensive lineman at End or, more preferably, Defensive Tackle, I believe that the Linebackers and the Defensive Backs would look a lot better. If the defensive line or linebackers got quicker pressure on the QB then the DBs wouldn't have to cover so long.
Linebacker would be the second place position for impact on the defense. If the defensive line could absorb more blocks, then Matthews could be free more frequently to get pressure on the QB. However, if we had another LB that could apply pressure like Matthews then the Pack would force a double team on the other side of the line which would allow another defensive lineman or Matthews to get pressure.
Safety, in my opinion, at this point would not impact the defense as much as DL or LB. True that a Safety could take the place of Woodson as a blitzer, but I think it would be more important to have one of the front 7 apply more pressure than to have a situational blitzer.
All in all, I am anxiously anticipating what will be picked next week as I think everyone else is. I am interested in what all your thoughts are.
