An Offseason Roster Analysis: Offensive Backfield

Draft season is almost upon us, so it is a good time to assess the state of the Packers' roster. I'm combining QB & RB because there really isn't a whole lot on the roster at either position. Here is a list of players the team has under contract:

QB Aaron Rodgers (31Oct08: 6yr/$65 mil) FA: '15
2013: $9.25 mil(+$500k workout+$500k roster)
2014: $10.5 mil(+$500k workout+$500k roster)

QB Graham Harrell (7Dec11: 3yr/$1.62 mil) RFA: '14
2013: $630k

QB B.J. Coleman (14Jan13: 3yr/$1.485 mil) RFA: '16
2013: $405k
2014: $495k
2015: $585k
RB Alex Green (30Jul11: 4yr/$2.578 mil [$515k signing]) FA: '15
2013: $555k (+$7.5k workout)
2014: $645k (+$7.5k workout)

RB DuJuan Harris (1Dec12: 3yr/$1.665 mil) FA: '15
2013: $555k
2014: $645k

RB James Starks (23Jun10: 4yr/$1.89 mil [$100.3k signing]) FA: '14
2013: $630k

FB John Kuhn (31Jul11: 3yr/$7.5 mil [$750k signing]) FA: '14
2013: $1.8 mil (+$450k roster+$100k workout)

There are no more superlatives left to describe Rodgers. His backups, however, leave much to be desired. In Harrell's only meaningful snap last season, he was a Football Follies highlight reel. He has not secured a roster spot yet, as Coleman looks to wrestle the job away from him. We will see how much Coleman has developed in a year come preseason.

Harris was a spark-plug to end the season, it will be interesting to see if he can duplicate his success over the long haul. Green is another season removed from his injury, and looks to regain the explosiveness he displayed in college, where he averaged 8.2 yards per carry in his senior season. Starks has shown flashes of talent, but his real problem has been an inability to stay healthy. Kuhn is the only FB on the roster, but even so, his salary may prove to be too expensive for the team & they may look to replace him with a cheaper option. The recent release of Brandon Saine indicates that the team will probably look to sign a veteran RB, like Benson or Bradshaw.

Draft priority (QB): Very Low
Yeah, maybe you're not enthused about Harrell, but the starter is the best in the league. It seems unlikely they use a draft pick on a backup QB this year, unless they get tremendous value.
Draft priority (RB): High
No primary back on the roster, and not exactly brimming with depth, either.
Potential UDFA (QB): Sean Renfree, Jordan Rodgers
Potential 2nd-5th round picks (RB): Eddie Lacy, Montee Ball, Jonathan Franklin, Giovani Bernard, Le'Veon Bell, Andre Ellington, Christine Michael, Stepfan Taylor Joseph Randle, Marcus Lattimore, Mike Gillislee, Kenjon Barner, Kerwynn Williams
Potential FA RB targets still on the market:
Michael Turner*, DJ Ware*, Beanie Wells*, Jackie Battle, Kahlil Bell, Cedric Benson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Peyton Hillis (FB), Brandon Jackson, Brandon Jacobs, Felix Jones, Deji Karim, Mewelde Moore, Jalen Parmele, LaRod Stephens-Howling

*released; will not count against us for compensatory picks if signed
