This morning, we broke down the Packers' special teams players, and we had to make one cut among the four of them. It's time to announce our prediction for the winner of the competition at kicker, and though it probably will not be a surprise, it may cause a bit of a stir among the readers. Without further ado, here are our projections.
K: Mason Crosby
P: Tim Masthay
LS: Brett Goode
Yes, APC projects Mason Crosby to hold on to his job, and yes, we did so unanimously. The talent gap between Crosby and his competition is massive. It all boils down to a question of whether or not Crosby can straighten himself out between the ears, and evidently all five of us think he will bounce back and that the competition in training camp will bring the best out of him. Personally, I think he bounces back with a very good year, hitting around 80% of his field goals.
As we mentioned earlier, Masthay and Goode have no competition in training camp and will be locks to both make the roster and be the primary (and, barring injury, only) options at their positions.
Off the Roster
Ah, Giorgio, what are we going to do with you. In my opinion, the best-case scenario is that both Crosby and Tavecchio make every field goal in training camp and that they each nail multiple opportunities from 50 yards or more in the preseason. Is that realistic? Probably not. But if that's the case, it may be a difficult decision between the two. What I think is more likely is that Tavecchio will push Crosby early on in camp, but will fade later on as Crosby locks himself in and has a consistent final two weeks. But only time will tell.
With that, our 53-man roster projection is complete! Check back tomorrow as we recap the entire projection and put together our initial guess at a depth chart as well. After that, get ready to see players report to camp and start the practice battles that will determine whether or not any of our predictions come true.
