Jordy Nelson to Miss Remainder of Preseason

USA TODAY Sports

Apparently, Bryan Bulaga's torn ACL wasn't enough to satiate the football gods.

The Packers can't catch a break this week. In addition to the troubling news that starting left tackle Bryan Bulaga will miss the season with a torn ACL, it appears that wide receiver Jordy Nelson will not be available until the start of the season.

Speaking to reporters after practice, head coach Mike McCarthy detailed Nelson's injury:

Jordy Nelson had a procedure on his knee and is gone for the rest of training camp. Hope is he will be back for the first game.

"Hope," as in there is reason to doubt his availability for the start of the season. The Packers entered camp deep at receiver, but those numbers are quickly dwindling. Randall Cobb finished Tuesday's practice with ice on his shoulder. Sederrick Cunningham dislocated his wrist and has been placed on injured reserve. The team signed street free agent receiver Justin Wilson to mitigate the damage, but Packers are one more injury to a wideout from declaring a state of emergency.

As for what this means for the team, finding a replacement for Cobb on special teams is now the top priority after left tackle. While the offense can manage with Cobb, James Jones, and Jarrett Boykin if Nelson is unable to go for the season, there's absolutely no reason to risk the team's best receiver on special teams. Jeremy Ross struggled fielding balls from the jugs machine today. He needs to correct those errors quickly so Cobb can be spared.

With any luck, Nelson will be able to return to full strength week 1 against the 49ers. However, after seeing him battle injuries most of last season, one has to wonder whether Nelson can put together a full healthy season again.
