Packers to Keep Throwback Uniforms with Alterations

Dilip Vishwanat

They're baaaaaack (with mandated safety changes).

Earlier this week, the Buccaneers announced that due to the league's new player helmet policies, the team is scrapping their "Bucco Bruce" throwback uniforms. The policy requires that players wear the same helmet for every game as a concussion reducing measure. For teams like Tampa Bay whose regular helmets are a different base color than their alternates, this means either changing the helmet or getting rid of the uniform.

As such, it was easy to speculate that the Packers, whose 1929 throwback uniforms employ a brown rather than yellow helmet, would be yet another casualty of the new policy. However, Pro Football Talk reports that isn't necessarily the case.

"Two teams have informed PFT that the throwbacks will be used with their current helmets.  The Vikings will apply their now-defunct two-dimensional horn decals and gray face masks to the new purple helmets with a matte finish.  The Packers will remove the stripes and decals from their yellow helmets."

For fans of third-jerseys, this is obviously good news. The Packers will wear their adjusted throwbacks October 20th for the Cleveland Browns' game.

What isn't discussed by PFT is the facemask, which with its green color won't match the otherwise blue/yellow color scheme of the uniform. If I had to wager a guess, I'd say the Packers swap in gray facemasks for the occasion. Regardless, the discarding of those ugly, glossy-brown helmets is a big win in my book.
