The Claymaker Overrated?

Football isn’t a game where you can overpay your players and be successful. The Patriots don’t do it, and they are the most successful team in the league right now. With the hard salary cap, it just can’t happen. In April of 2013, the Packers signed Clay Matthews to a 5 year, 66 million dollar contract, making him the highest paid linebacker in the league. I was absolutely shocked. I went home from school and did some research, looked at his numbers, compared them to other linebackers (nfl.com):

· In 5 years, he has had 50 sacks. (10 a season)

· 4 interceptions (.8 a season)

· 186 total tackles (37.2 a season)

· He has never led the league in sacks

· Never led the team in tackles

Linebackers who have led the league in sacks since Matthews has been in the league:

· Elvis Dumervil (5 year/26 million dollar contract)

· DeMarcus Ware (7 year/79 million dollar contract)

· Robert Mathis (4 year/36 million dollar contract)

His best statistical season came in 2010 when he recorded 13.5 sacks; which was good enough to get him fourth best in the league behind:

· DeMarcus Ware (7 year/79 million dollar contract)

· Tamba Hali (5 year/57 million dollar contract)

· Cameron Wake (5 year/ 34 million dollar contract)

The Packers pay Clay Matthews 1.2 million dollars per sack, if he keeps up his 10 sack a year average. If we were to do that for the whole team we would be spending 52.8 million dollars, which is 45 percent of the allowed salary cap.

I’m not saying I don’t like Clay Matthews, I love the guy. He’s aggressive, he’s tough nosed, and he gives it all on every play. I love him…just not to the tune of 12 million dollars a year. He’s a glorified pass rusher, who averages 10 sacks a year. He’s an average outside linebacker who doesn’t really play the run. The Packers overpaid him, it’s as simple as that. And football isn’t a league where you can overpay players. I love Clay Matthews, just not as the highest paid lineb acker in the NFL.
