Now, I know that I am young in the eyes of many APC regulars. In fact, I was born while the USFL was in the midst of suing the NFL for its monopoly on broadcasting rights. This means that I was not even a twinkle in my parents' eye when the Michigan Panthers won the first league championship.
However, I grew up in Michigan. In fact, I lived only an hour north of Detroit and about a half an hour away from the Pontiac Silverdome. This means I've heard many, many jokes about the only championship a Michigan football team winning was in a league that went under.
I also lived in a house divided. My father grew up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which is generally regarded as Packers' territory. However, he is a devout Bears fan (for whatever reason). Granted, he did take me to see the Packers play the Lions in Detroit. He even cheered for the Pack while we were there.
So what does this have to do with the A11FL?
For those of you who don't know, there is supposed to be a new spring league starting up. They are even resurrecting many USFL teams to play in it. One of which, is the Michigan Panthers.
There will also be a Chicago team.
So, besides the obvious "WOO, YEAR-ROUND FOOTBALL!" excitement, maybe my father and I can finally cheer for the same team.
Or maybe he'll pick Chicago again, and our rivalry will continue.
