Another practice, another press conference for Packers head coach Mike McCarthy. Because it's early in camp and Green Bay hasn't endured any significant injuries, McCarthy was asked mostly about the transition into training camp, the team's first padded practice, and other early observations.
- According to McCarthy, the Packers' first padded practice was "probably similar" to those from earlier seasons. He was pleased with the energy and structure, but made sure to note that the team is "Not ready to play a game, that's for sure."
- The coach had an interesting line about transitioning into training camp. "I don't have any concerns. This is a time to grow. First two practices, have to flush out the OTA mindset." Clearly, McCarthy remains displeased with how training camp works under the new CBA.
- Former Green Bay running back Johnathan Franklin made an appearance in camp today. When asked about it, McCarthy said, "It was great to have him visiting practice. We hope to find a non-playing role for him in the organization." Seems that Franklin's Los Angeles mayoral campaign is on hold.
- As noted in APC's practice notebook, Monday was a big day for the Aaron-Rodgers-to-Jarrett-Boykin connection. McCarthy spoke glowingly about Boykin, stating, "He had a tremendous year last year. I know Aaron feels good about him." While no conclusions can be reached after a single padded practice, it seems Boykin will be difficult to unseat as the third starting receiver.
- No player was singled out for more praise from McCarthy than Packers defensive lineman Mike Daniels. "I like everything about Mike Daniels. I like the way he goes about his business, his personality, how he expresses himself. He has a great approach, definitely trying to take the next step." As we wrote last week, the Packers hopes of turning around the defense necessitates a big year from Daniels.
- With the pads on, McCarthy received his first look at Julius Peppers dropping into coverage. "He's very athletic. The way he has played in space is impressive. He's here to go towards the quarterback, but when he drops he has great range."
- The Packers announced the hiring of Adam Korzun as director of performance nutrition. When asked about the addition, McCarthy simply stated, "It's part of an on-going focus to grow and get better."
