Scheduled Event
Packers 21, Tampa Bay 30
This game wasn't as close as the score. As Pack Man said In the comments to the open thread:
this absolutely sucks
if the offense cant get it together this is going to be a long season
During the Favre un-retirement saga, one of the reasons why Mike McCarthy said that Rodgers has to start instead of Favre was that the Packers changed the offense since last season to better suit Rodgers instead of Favre. I would like McCarthy to change the offense back to what it was last season as soon as possible.
The Onion made a joke about it last week, but the offensive line is in bad shape. Maybe you can excuse the lack of a running game against Dallas and Tampa, but they couldn't run against Detroit either and everyone runs against Detroit. The line got no push against Tampa's d-line, and RB Ryan Grant had no where to run. Not to take any blame off of Grant, he had a bad game and a killer fumble too, but the offensive line gave him nothing. Rodgers had his worst game, even before he got injured. None of the receivers, except WR Greg Jennings, are getting open.
The only thing that kept this game close was the two big TD passes to Jennings, and the play of the Packers secondary and their three INTs, none bigger than CB Charles Woodson's INT he returned for a TD.
It was a rough game for the defensive front seven, DE Aaron Kampman was shutdown and Tampa's offensive line got a lot of push up front, but they got to QB Brian Griese a bunch of times and were good more often than bad. S Nick Collins is working on a career season and CB Tramon Williams had a great game. The defense is playing good enough to win.
Also, the Packers special teams got rolled in this game. Nothing from the return game and new P Derrick Frost was horrible. Frost had a good game against Minnesota, but he's been bad or awful ever since. I've been cutting him some slack after poor Detroit and Dallas games, but this game was inexcusable. The only way he should keep his job next week is if P Jon Ryan is still with Seattle or there is no one worth mentioning available as a street free agent.
I'm not writing off the season. With Minnesota losing again, only Chicago has a chance to tie Green Bay for the lead. No team in the NFC North is going to run away with the division. But the Packers have taken a step back from last season and don't look anything like an NFC division champion.

Open Thread: Green Bay at Tampa Bay
Green Bay Packers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Monday, September 28th, 2008
Noon CST, FOX
This is an open thread for the game.
Inactives from NFL.com:
Packers inactives: QB Brian Brohm (3rd), SS Atari Bigby, RB Kregg Lumpkin, CB Al Harris, FB Korey Hall, T Breno Giacomini, WR James Jones, DE Jeremy Thompson.
Analysis: WR Jordy Nelson will serve as the Packers’ No. 3 wideout with Jones out of action.
Buccaneers inactives: QB Jeff Garcia (3rd), QB Josh Johnson, FB B.J. Askew, LB Matt McCoy, G Davin Joseph, T James Lee, WR Joey Galloway, DT Ryan Sims.
Analysis: QB Brian Griese will continue to start in the absence of Garcia. WRs Antonio Bryant and Ike Hilliard are nice fantasy options, especially with Galloway inactive.
As expected, Packers starting S Atari Bigby, CB Al Harris, and FB Korey Hall are out for this game, and rookie 2nd round pick CB Pat Lee will play in his first NFL game. Hopefully Woodson, Collins, and Rouse are all feeling good, and the loss of Harris and Bigby won't be a big deal.
If someone had said to me that Davin Joseph and Joey Galloway were the two best players on the Bucs' offense, I wouldn't have argued. They are still playing well without them, but it sure doesn't help them.

Friday Injury Report for Week 4 vs. Tampa Bay
C'mon Mitchell! You can do the entire injury report, so I can watch the Brewers kick butt (go Marlins!). Oh well, the Brewers' game is over, Seth McClung is a big hero, and it's time to talk Packer injuries!
The big news is that's it's tough going in the Packers secondary. Luckily they've got depth, and Mike McCarthy said rookie CB Pat Lee's looking good in practice, so they've got that going for them. Bigby's still out despite the upgrade to doubtful, Rouse now has a injured knee after dealing with an injured ankle earlier, and Woodson will be playing through a broken toe for a while. Collins even joined the list, but he's probably the healthiest member of the starting secondary. Obviously Harris is the focus this week after it looked like he suffered a season ending spleen injury last week, it defintely will end his consecutive games played streak, he's started 83 straight games as a Packer since 2003, but the good news is that Mike McCarthy thinks Harris may return this season:
(Are you any further along on a timetable for Al?)
I'd say it's safe it's going to be at least three to four weeks. The thing that we know for sure is we've had to totally shut him down for seven days, so he'll start probably Monday morning with some form of conditioning, and it will just progress as we move forward. There will be some tests that are done along the way. I don't have an exact timeframe for you.
(So the consensus is it will heal on its own?)
Yes, that's my understanding.
Otherwise the team looks pretty good. Starting FB Korey Hall will probably miss this game too, but backup FB John Kuhn should be fine in his place. One of the most disappointing occurances this season is the absence of WR James Jones, who will probably not play in Tampa due to his knee injury. I had really been looking forward to him taking a big step forward this season, but he's been hobbled with that injury he suffered at the end of the preseason. It's not his fault, but it's really disappointing.

Preview: Packers at Tampa Bay
Coming off a tough home loss, the Packers have to travel cross country to Tampa and take on a quality team, with a very good defense, while the secondary figures out life without CB Al Harris. I don't really like how that sounds. Rankings from Football Outsiders and NFL.com:
| Teams | FO Ranking | NFL Ranking |
|---|---|---|
| Packers Rushing Offense | 11 | 15 |
| Tampa Bay Rushing Defense | 9 | 20 |
| Tampa Bay Rushing Offense | 14 | 14 |
| Packers Rushing Defense | 28 | 26 |
| Packers Passing Offense | 9 | 7 |
| Tampa Bay Passing Defense | 11 | 27 |
| Tampa Bay Passing Offense | 14 | 6 |
| Packers Passing Defense | 6 | 22 |
| Tampa Bay Special Teams | 17 | |
| Packers Special Teams | 4 |
According to the NFL stats, this looks like a matchup of two passing teams against two struggling defenses. Looking at Football Outsiders, it looks like two teams that are average or above in every aspect, except the Packers have an awful run defense. The Packers run defense isn't bad, except they've faced Adrian Peterson and Marion Barber in two of their first three games and Football Outsiders says they are the 2nd and 3rd best backs in the NFL so far. Run defenses tend to look bad against Dallas and Minnesota. So really these are two similar, in quality, teams, and the Packers have a noticeable edge on special teams. On paper, that appears to give the Packers a slight edge.
Here's the prediction I told to JScott over at Buc 'Em:
The X-Factor is Brian Griese. He can be great, see 2000 and 2004 seasons, plus he torched the Packers last season in Lambeau as a Chicago Bear. The rest of the time, his QB rating is below 75 or worse. Usually he's below average. If below average Griese shows up on Sunday then the Packers will win 24-13 (something like that), but if QB rating over 90 Brian shows up then I have trouble seeing the Packers winning without a killer turnover or special teams play going their way.

Looking Ahead To Tampa Bay Next Sunday
The Packers used to play a game every year in Tampa against the Bucs as a member of the old NFC Central, from 1977-2001. They made the trip again in 2002 and 2003 as a member of the current NFC North, but this Sunday's game will be the first trip to Tampa in five years.
Although I'm still familiar with the Bucs of the late 1990s, I've lost track of the current state of their team. Luckily JScott over at Buc' Em answered some questions after I did a quick perusal of their team and their win last week at Chicago:
1. It's been two weeks since Jeff Garcia and Jon Gruden filed for divorce.
Did the Bucs make the right decision in going with Brian Griese?
I know it sounds crazy, but they did. Jeff Garcia for whatever reason has not been the same Quarterback since he sat out the final two games of the season last year. In the Wildcard Round of the Playoffs against the New York Giants he was erratic and off target. In Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints, he wouldn't step up in the pocket for anything and that destroyed our pass protection. He was also out of sync with his Receivers. He would either throw the ball behind them or he would miss read the route entirely. I think Gruden honestly felt like Jeff Garcia wasn't giving 100% out there on the field and so he sat him on the bench.
Although Brian Griese throws his fair share of interceptions (see last Sunday), he has the calm/poise to step up in the pocket and we need that more than a mobile Quarterback at this stage in the season. Griese may lull the fan base and spectators to sleep, but he provides the Buccaneers the best chance to win with his managing of the game.2. Brian Griese had 67 pass attempts against Chicago last week? Has the fun-and-gun returned to the NFL?
It did last week and probably will a couple more times this season. If the running game gets stuffed like it did by the Bears, then Head Coach Jon Gruden has no reservations with chucking the ball down field 50+ times. In week one our rushing game looked great and Gruden still called 41 passing plays. It's definitely not the ideal scenario and I can't think of many instances where a QB throws three interceptions and still wins the game, but it's what we're resigned to when the Running game is non-existent. I wouldn't call it the fun-and-gun though, more like the dink-and-dunk...
3. Will Jordy Nelson run past Aqib Talib for another long TD? Did Ronde Barber have trouble stopping Brandon Lloyd last week in Chicago? Your cornerbacks were really good last season, are they struggling this season or is this just a small sample size and they're really just fine?I was so depressed on draft day when your Packers scooped up Kansas State WR/PR Jordy Nelson. The entire community at Buc 'Em was hopeful the Bucs would be able to get him on Draft Day. If Nelson was ever going to own Talib again this would be the week. Aqib is coming off a hamstring injury that held him out of last week's win over the Chicago Bears. At this point he's expected to play, but I'm not sure how effective he will be. Ronde Barber got absolutely owned in the second half by the Bears Brandon Lloyd. Barber was really out of position, his calling on the field is in the slot where he can blitz the Quarterback and disrupt receptions five yards off the line of scrimmage. With Talib's injury and Elbert Mack's suspension, Barber was called to do it all and he really got exposed by Lloyd. I don't expect it to happen again with Mack and Talib back this week.
The defense thus far has been susceptible to the pass this season. Drew Brees had tons of success, Matt Ryan had decent success when he wasn't running for his life, and Kyle Orton looked like an NFL QB at times in the 2nd Half of Sunday's overtime win over the Bears. It's an ebb and flow over the course of the game. At times Ronde Barber and Phillip Buchanon are on top of the Receivers separating them from the ball or batting a pass and then other times they're five yards off the receiver allowing receptions. It's definitely a cause for concern. The Bucs have also allowed more than a handful of splash plays (30+ yards) this season. It's still a dominating defense, but at times it can get abused whether it be a lack of focus or poor execution it's a little too early to put a definite diagnosis on it.
4. How has the loss of OL Davin Joseph hurt this season? Will he be back to play against the Packers?
I'd be naïve if I didn't think the loss of Joseph hurt this offensive line, but to be honest Rookie G Jeremy Zuttah has done a fantastic job in Davin's absence. Last week he helped QB Brian Griese throw 67 passes without surrendering a single sack. That's pretty amazing considering the defensive line Chicago has. He could definitely improve as far as run blocking is concerned, but I'm sure he would own up to that as well. For a Rookie he has been great thus far though.
I know the Buccaneers are re-evaluating Davin for a possible return this week, but I've yet to hear anything on that front. It wouldn't hurt for Davin to sit out until he is 100% healed up, as Zuttah is playing well and there's no need to rush him back out there with the possibility of re-injuring himself.
5. The Bucs are off to a good start. Who's the team MVP or which player should we watch for on Sunday that is having a great season?
The team MVP thus far is LB Barrett Ruud. Aside from leading the team in tackles week in and week out, he has been an absolute beast on defense. He's the reason CB Phillip Buchanon returned a 26 yard interception for a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons. Ruud hit Rookie QB Matt Ryan while he was releasing the ball causing a wounded duck to land in Buchanon's hands. Last week against the Bears he intercepted a pass in the end zone while covering Rookie RB Matt Forte. This pass was 30 yards down field and Barrett made the coverage like a Cornerback. I've never in my life seen a Linebacker, cover a Running back that far down the field much less intercept the pass. His play has been amazing. Aaron Rodgers would be wise to keep an eye on Barrett Sunday because he's primed to disrupt that offense.
