To prepare for training camp, we will be breaking down every player on the Green Bay Packers' 90-man roster in more detail, looking at contract terms and 2013 statistics, before we make our prediction for which players will make the 53-man roster at the end of training camp.
In this edition of our roster preview, we take a look at the five new defensive linemen who will go to camp with the Packers. They come from a variety of different avenues, as the team has added a veteran free agent, a second-day draft pick, and a trio of undrafted free agents.
#98 Letroy Guion
6'4", 315 pounds
How acquired: signed as unrestricted free agent, 2014
2014 Contract Details (signed for 2014 only)
Base Salary: $730,000
Signing Bonus: $100,000
Roster Bonus: $105,000
Workout Bonus: $50,000
Total Compensation: $985,000
Salary Cap Number: $985,000
2013 Stats
13 games played, 13 starts
21 total tackles (10 solo), 1.0 sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one pass defended
Guion arrives in Green Bay after six mediocre seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Playing mostly the right defensive tackle position for Minnesota, he was a primary starter for the past two seasons, but played less than 40% of defensive snaps in the 13 games he played in 2013. He'll bring a veteran presence to the line, but not a hugely impressive amount of production.
#94 Khyri Thornton
6'3", 304 pounds
How acquired: 2014 third-round draft pick
2014 Contract Details signed through 2017)
Base Salary: $420,000
Signing Bonus: $563,252
Total Compensation: $983,252
Salary Cap Number: $560,813
2013 Stats
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
11 games played, 11 starts
39 total tackles (16 solo), 6.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack
Thornton impressed scouts at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January, and was a captain for the Golden Eagles in 2013. In his four years there, he recorded a total of 30 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. The third-round pick will likely be asked to bulk up, as many scouts project him as a nose tackle down the road.
#64 Mike Pennel
6'4", 332 pounds
How acquired: signed as undrafted free agent, 2014
2014 Contract Details (signed through 2016)
Base Salary: $420,000
Signing Bonus: $3,500
Total Compensation: $423,500
Salary Cap Number: $421,166
2013 Stats
Colorado State University at Pueblo
12 games played, 12 starts
36 total tackles (21 solo), 6.0 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries
A massive nose tackle prospect who was a one-time big high school recruit, Pennel was a force for the D-II Thunderwolves. He'll likely be best served spending a year on the practice squad to get into NFL shape, but he's a name to keep an eye on for the future as a big body in the middle.
#74 Carlos Gray
6'2", 313 pounds
How acquired: signed as undrafted free agent, 2014
2014 Contract Details (signed through 2016)
Base Salary: $420,000
Signing Bonus: $4,000
Total Compensation: $424,000
Salary Cap Number: $421,333
2013 Stats
North Carolina State University Wolfpack
23 total tackles (10 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks
Gray left school a year early, but went undrafted. He started only one year at NC State, but will look to make an impact on special teams and likely try to earn a spot on the practice squad for 2014.
#97 Luther Robinson
6'3", 301 pounds
How acquired: signed as undrafted free agent, 2014
2014 Contract Details
No official contract details known
Likely signed for 3-year, league-minimum deal ($420,000 base salary for 2014)
2013 Stats
University of Miami Hurricanes
13 games played, one start
24 total tackles (7 solo), 1.0 tackle for loss
Robinson only started one game in 2013 for Miami, but was a key member of their defensive line rotation. Like Gray, he possesses good size for a 3-4 lineman, but is unlikely to contribute much in 2014.
