NFL Supplemental Draft

The supplemental draft was held today and two players were drafted.

First was Georgia CB Paul Oliver. He was projected as a potential 1st round pick in 2008 but as the linked article noted, he ran a poor 40 time in the 4.5 to 4.6 range and he couldn't keep a passing grade at a football school. Some Packer fans wanted to see GM Ted Thompson draft him, but Oliver would have had a hard time beating out his primary challengers, CB Will Blackmon or CB Frank Walker. He might have even had trouble with CB Jarrett Bush who hardly played at all in 2007 but showed promise last preseason in Carolina.

Next was Maryland OT Jared Gaither. He too was a projected 1st round pick in 2008 until he turned out to be a headcase who got himself kicked off the team. A classic million dollar talent and a five cent head. He's also really big at almost 6'9" and 324 lbs. This alone probably makes Gaither a poor choice for a Packer team that currently favors smaller lineman who can thrive in a zone blocking scheme, although that hasn't stopped them from giving T Orrin Thompson first crack as the backup left tackle. Gaither is a good risk for Baltimore because he might be able to replace starting LT Jonathan Ogden if he retires after the season.

Thanks to NFL Draft Dog for the info on Oliver and Gaither. Plus it is great that they already have a 2008 Mock Draft up. Apparently they think the Packers will just miss the playoffs, drafting 21st overall, and that LB Brady Poppinga is not the answer and LB Malik Jackson is.

MOCK DRAFT
I think in that mock draft they actually have the packers making the playoffs.  The rest of the NFC north is ahead of us.

You Are Right
I just counted up by the number of teams that should make the playoffs, but draft order is based on record instead. Apparently they think the Packers will run away with the division because Chicago is the next best and they pick much earlier.
