NFL Combine: Offense

The NFL Combine has been going on since last Thursday in Indianapolis, but Saturday and Sunday were the first two days players did on-field workouts. The offensive players went first, and the defensive players are on Monday and Tuesday. Would the Packers use their 1st round pick on an offensive player?

There is a deep group of quarterbacks available, with Boston College's QB Matt Ryan and Louisville's QB Brian Brohm, leading the pack, but no way. But expect a late round pick to battle for the 3rd QB job.

There is a deep group of running backs too, lead by Arkansas' awesome RB Darren McFadden. Assuming Mendenhall and Stewart are gone by the Packers selection too, most of the top backs after them are smaller guys who wouldn't fit as a starting back in the Packers system. Maybe UCF's RB Kevin Smith, but he's logged an awful lot of carries in college, and this isn't a major need since he would be a backup.

The Packers could draft a tight end, but if they really wanted to use a high draft choice on a tight end, they would have used it last year when the position was wide open. Since now they only need a backup for TE Donald Lee, the Packers will probably use a late round pick to find some depth.

There is a need to find more candidates on the offensive line. The tackles are solid, but RT Mark Tauscher is a free agent after 2008 and you never know if they will be able to resign him. They really need to solidify the guard position. G Jason Spitz is at the top of the depth chart and he's still no lock to start in 2008. I know Michigan's T Jake Long is outstanding and will be a top pick, but I'm not familiar with any of the other guys at tackle or guard.

If the Packers do use their 1st round pick on offense, my money's on them drafting a wide receiver. It doesn't seem like a major need, but 4th and 5th WRs Ruvell Martin and Koren Robinson didn't do much over the last few games. Rookie WR James Jones had some good games as the 3rd WR, but he seems better suited as a possession receiver instead of the deep threat McCarthy might prefer. The Packers want tall, big, and fast, so a guy like California's WR DeSean Jackson will not be drafted. A couple of players who have all three that might be 1st round talents are Indiana's WR James Hardy and Michigan State's WR Devin Thomas. Both players performed very well at the combine and they would be lucky to sneak into the bottom of the 1st round. Since that is where the Packers draft (30th overall) they probably would expect to be drafted by a team like Green Bay.

Still I expect GM Ted Thompson will be looking closely at defensive backs with his 2008 1st round pick instead of an offensive player.
