With The 102nd Pick Overall - 4th Round

The Green Bay Packers select Wake Forest DE Jeremy Thompson.

This is the bonus pick received from the Jets when the Packers traded down six spots out of the first round.

It wasn't a top priority, but the Packers needed to add more depth on the defensive line to replace the loss of trading DT Corey Williams to Cleveland. Since DE Cullen Jenkins can play inside at tackle or outside at end, the Packers were able to fill the need by drafting either at end or tackle.

Rivals.com says he's at 6'5", 230 lbs. but Rivals.com still rated him well on run support. NFL.com says he's 264 lbs. which seems more likely. He had to come back from an ACL tear in 2005 and apparently wasn't 100% until recently, so that's why he's a 4th round pick.

The 4th round is a good time to draft guys with 1st or 2nd round talent, but slip due to injury or other concerns. Thompson seems to be that type of player.

A promising, if healthy, player who fills another area of need. Again, a good pick by GM Ted Thompson.

UPDATE: According to Packersnews.com this was actually a trade up, with the Packers giving up a 5th round pick and the 4th rounder acquired from the Jets, to move up and select Thompson. Bonus, he's the brother of current Packer practice squad T Orrin Thompson.
