SportsBlogs' NFL sites will be running a mock draft of the first three rounds starting next week and continuing on for the next couple of weeks. Not surprisingly I'm picking for the Packers, but I don't know who they might select.
I read a rumor that they were considering drafting CB Darrelle Revis in the 1st round. They could use depth in the secondary, primarily at safety but maybe it is better to draft a CB and if later he turns into a safety or Charles Woodson has to move to safety, so be it. Plus the Packers had success drafting CBs who later became Pro Bowl safeties; LeRoy Butler and Darren Sharper. I still think they'll avoid drafting a CB, but there should be a number of talented CBs available in the middle of the 1st round and that might be where the best value is.
Miami's TE Greg Olson is a possibility, but he seems like a reach at 16. If they stay at 16 and RB if Marshawn Lynch is grabbed by Buffalo at 12, then either WRs Ted Ginn or Robert Meachem are possibilities. But Olson, Ginn, and Meachem don't seem like GM Ted Thompson type of guys. Thompson usually drafts guys who were accomplished in college and not just combine stars like Olson and Meachem. Ginn could be great, but he is small (5'11" and 176 lbs.) and the Packers prefer tall and fast WRs like Randy (shutter) Moss.
It feels like a draft where Thompson waits to see if someone unexpected falls (like QB Aaron Rodgers in 2005) and if not then trade down and get the guy they really want, like Darrelle Revis, later in the 1st round or early 2nd round.
