With their third round pick, the Green Bay Packers again waited until the end of the round, and selected Hawaii RB Alex Green. He's not a well known player, but NFL Draft Scout pointed out that he's been rising on draft boards lately and projected him as the 90th best player in the draft.
NFL Draft Scout lets you compare him to other running backs, and he's about the same size as Illinois RB Mikel Leshoure, with more speed. His 4.45 40 time is among the best, and it's remarkable coming from a 225 pound back. In that regard, he's a typical Packer running back. Both RB Ryan Grant and RB James Starks are bigger backs with excellent speed for their size. That combination is why he was ranked very highly by Football Outsiders in their projection system.
This highlight video begins with his eye popping 8.1 yards per carry last season. Just as with their second round pick, WR Randall Cobb, they used a high draft pick on a position that wasn't a trendy mock draft pick. But with the now likely free agent departures of WR James Jones and RB Brandon Jackson, these picks add depth at two positions that need it. Also, it's possible that in a year or two both Cobb and Green will be upgrades over both Jones and Jackson.
