Cheese Substitute: College Football Games To Watch For Saturday, October 6

This is one of the best college football weeks of the season. So watch some football.

The last two weeks in the college football world have been dire. There hasn't been anything great on the schedule at all, and each week has only had a couple of watchable games. This week, we have two killer must-watch games and five more that are absolutely worth your time.

Unfortunately, because the college football scheduling gods don't like us very much, none of those seven excellent games is on at 11 a.m. CT. You have your pick of lameness for that timeslot. Sorry. Draft prospects below come from Chris Steuber, whose blog you should check out. The Packers have scouts at Georgia-South Carolina. In the prospect lists below, an asterisk indicates an underclassman.

While none of the 11 a.m. games are anything special, I'm going to pick out Northwestern vs. Penn State as the best one. I'm not convinced that Northwestern are for real, and nothing but a beatdown in this game will convince me. However, Penn State are a bit better than I thought. I think they can pull out a 4-4 record in the B1G, so a win for Northwestern at Happy Valley would be impressive. You can catch this one on ESPN.

Northwestern NFL prospects

OLB *Chi Chi Ariguzo, S *Ibraheim Campbell, QB *Kain Colter, OT Neil Deiters, WR Demetrius Fields, OG Brian Mulroe, OLB David Nwabuisi, OT Chuck Porcelli, WR *Kyle Prater, DE *Tyler Scott, OT Patrick Ward, DE Quentin Williams.

Penn State NFL prospects

OG *Miles Dieffenbach, DT Jordan Hill, LB Gerald Hodges, LB *Mike Hull, DE Pete Massaro, LB Michael Mauti, QB Matt McGloin, CB Stephon Morris, C Matt Stankiewitch, DE Sean Stanley, OG *John Urschel, FB Michael Zordich.

This week's top games didn't get spread out too much at all. Only one of the week's great games comes at 2:30. That's LSU against Florida, and I'm not sure what to think of it. The Gators are at home and LSU looked shaky against Towson (!) last week, but I'm not a believer in the Gators. Expect a s--tshow. You can watch this one on CBS.

LSU NFL prospects

DE Chancey Aghayere, K Drew Alleman, WR *Kadron Boone, TE Chase Clement, DT Josh Downs, DE Lavar Edwards, OT *Chris Faulk, OT Alex Hurst, DT *Bennie Logan, C P.J. Lonergan, SS *Craig Loston, QB Zach Mettenberger, DE/OLB *Barkevious Mingo, ILB *Kevin Minter, DE/OLB *Sam Montgomery, FS *Eric Reid, WR Russell Shepard, CB *Tharold Simon, RB *Spencer Ware, OG *Josh Williford.

Florida NFL prospects

ILB Jon Bostic, FB *Trey Burton, WR *Andre Debose, DT *Dominique Easley, SS *Matt Elam, FS Josh Evans, DT *Sharrif Floyd, RB Mike Gillislee, WR Frankie Hammond, Jr., C *Jonotthan Harrison, OLB *Jelani Jenkins, OLB Lerentee McCray, OT Xavier Nixon, TE *Jordan Reed, K Caleb Sturgis.

The best game of the week, in my opinion, comes at 6. Games like Texas-West Virginia are why we fought the Cold War. If you don't watch, the communists win. Fight communism by watching Geno Smith cement himself as the Heisman favorite in Austin. Apparently, there aren't any scouts at this one, which seems odd to me. This game is on FOX.

West Virginia NFL prospects

RB Shawne Alston, WR Tavon Austin, WR *Stedman Bailey, K Tyler Bitancurt, OG Jeff Braun, FB Ryan Clarke, OLB Terence Garvin, OG Josh Jenkins, C Joe Madsen, CB Pat Miller, QB Geno Smith.

Texas NFL prospects

CB *Carrington Byndom, WR *Mike Davis, DT *Ashton Dorsey, WR Marquise Goodwin, OT *Donald Hawkins, OLB *Jordan Hicks, OL Trey HopkinsDE *Jackson Jeffcoat, DT *Brandon Moore, DE Alex Okafor, FS Kenny Vaccaro, OG *Mason Walters.

You can watch Georgia-Sakerlina instead, but unless you went to one of those schools, that would mean you have awful taste in football.

Washington are fresh off an upset win over Stanford, and they're trying to repeat that shocking feat at Autzen Stadium. They're not going to do it, but Oregon generally doesn't wake up until the third quarter, so you'll get tricked into thinking Sark is out-coaching Kelly for a while, which is never, ever true. This one is at 9:30 on ESPN.

Washington NFL prospects

RB *Jesse Callier, OLB *Princeton Fuimaono, WR James Johnson, OL *Erik Kohler, SS *Sean Parker, QB *Keith Price, OL Drew Schaefer, CB Desmond Trufant.

Oregon NFL prospects

ILB Kiko Alonso, RB Kenjon Barner, FS John Boyett, OLB Michael Clay, OT Nick Cody, DL *Taylor Hart, OLB/DE Dion Jordan, P Jackson Rice, WR Rahsaan Vaughn, OG Carson York.
